The students of WHS held their own election. Preceding our election day, debates were held by Jim Golz, supporting Barry Goldwater, and Joyce Olson, supporting Lyndon Johnson. NATIONAL MERIT TEST FINALIS TS Three senior students became finalists in the National Merit Testing Program this year. They are the first in the history of WHS to achieve this honor. We owe much to these civic-minded citizens. The board approves personnel appointments made by the superintendent and annually submits a budget to the electors. The board then appro- priates needed funds from this budget. Superintendent Howard Kuj ath is the professional advisor to the board and coordinator between the board and the faculty. He is presently in his nineteenth year as district administrator. The Future Homemakers of America, under the leadership of Miss Fowler, is composed of girls who either have been or are now in the home economics program. The members joined in many activities throughout the course of the year. Among these were a swimming party, participation in Farm Progress Days, and a float in the Homecoming Parade. Farm Progress Days The AFS was formed to help raise money to bring foreign students to our school. It is the organization's responsibility to see to it that these students have an enjoyable stay at Waupun. Throughout the year the group sponsors va1'ious activities, including the Sadie Hawkins Dance, to raise this money. Last June, Waupun was host to 28 AFS students who had spent the year in Wisconsin high schools. After a three- day stay, they took a three-week trip through the Northeastern states. Our Community Supports Its Youth For many years, Rotary has honored nine mem- bers of the junior class with monthly member- ships. These boys are selected by the faculty. This year, Kiwanis began to honor students for their outstanding service in local churches. Each pastor has nominated candidates. The Lions have a program of aid to the visually handicapped which cuts across all age lines. All three clubs cooperated in giving the annual athletic banquet that honors the players and their fathers. The con- ference meet was just a warm-up for Gordie as the following week he finished fourth in a field of 126, thus gaining his state berth. Illness prevented him from competing in that event.
