DANCEBAND The Danceband, consisting ot thirteen mem- bers, met for rehearsals at six o'clock on Monday nights. Mr. Johnson was the advisor. The group provided music for several dances after football and basketball games, including the Alumni game. Their major engagement of the year was .the Jobs Daughters' formal dance in December. The Danceband is self-supporting and must provide funds to pay for the new music, the re- painting ot the stands which was done by some of the boys, and their trip. To earn money, with the assistance of junior band students, they sold pop and ice cream at the Ripon basketball game and sponsored and played at the dance following the game. However, it is not all work as the group planned to take a trip in the spring. SYMPHONETTE The Symphonette is an extra-curricular music group. There are twenty-seven girls in the Sym- phonette and it is the only all-girl instrumental group in Waupun High School. Rehearsals are held once a week on Fridays in seventh hour during most of the year, with emphasis placed on string practice, but when graduation approaches the group practices more often since they provide the music tor baccalau- reate and commencement. The members of this group play mostly tor their own enjoyment. The Symphonette is the only musical organization in our high school which uses strings. It has the instrumentation ot a symphony orchestra and plays light and semi-classical music. It is under the direction ot Mr. Robert H. Johnson. STANDING: Mr. R. Johnson, J. Kearley, C. VVAUBUNETTE Our school newspaper the Waubunette brings to the students news, gossip, sports and humor once every two weeks. The paper had its face lifted this year, changes included mimeographing, instead of the set print type previously employed, and various cartoons suiting the individual paper, drawn by Wayne Johannes. With Leonard Johnson, Jean Maas and Kay Hlinker as leading editors and with the help of the reporters, business staff and office practice class, the Waubunette has been read and enjoyed by almost every person in W.H.S. Our paper this year had as faculty advisors, Miss A. Erickson and Miss B. Schrank, who did the supervising on the typing and printing of the paper. WAUBUN The annual staff, headed by editor Jack War- ber, has worked hard gathering the important news of the year and attempting to meet the dead- lines, so that they could finally come up with the finished product-the 1954 Waubun. In the spring of 1953 the planning board met to discuss plans for the annual and organize the staff. Some of the members examined a collection of annuals at the University of Wisconsin in Octo- ber to investigate new ideas. The staff is composed of seniors, with the ex- ception of Assistant Editor, Bomona Wilsie, who is a junior, and the photography understudies. They were assisted by Miss M. Lippoldt as faculty advisor, and Mr. R. Holmes as photographer. A lot of fun, time, and hard work has gone into the '54 edition of the WAUBUN, and the staff hopes that everyone is pleased with the result. ROW FOUR: M. Maas, B. Vande Zande, M. Liner, B. Eight boys reported for practice and they did very well for their first year. Cross country is a race of endurance. The course is a rolling field, such as a qolf course, and approximately 2 to ZZ miles long. Cross-country is run in many high schools and colleges and is a good conditioning sport for distance men in track and for basketball. It is run during the fall. The Warriors had two official meets and one practice meet. They were tied for third in the conference meet. Individual standout was Vernon Damsteegt who finished first in all three meets. :: ,-.l in ., ' 1 Q , 1 J T1 J ,'.. 7 I 4' 'rf 1 F.F.A. The B team, juniors and sopho- mores, and the C team, freshman, not only had successful seasons but gained experience for the future. Another project carried on this year was the sponsoring of a vaudeville show of out of town talent. The proceeds from this show went to meet chapter expenses. The close scores indicate the spirit and iight which was put forth by all members of the squad. Bad breaks and injuries didn't help the squad any, but they did put forth enough drive to coun- teract these forces by defeating Horicon 18 to 6 in the non-conference opener. They also swamped Columbus 21 to O in the Homecoming game and posted a 20 to 0 win over Hartford. Those who saw action as linemen were: J. Nummerdor, W. Mulder, R. Anderson, C. Micheels, W. Hoshute, R. McDowell, L. Schrader, F. Peterson, T. Peterson, J. Liner, G. Dhein, J. Leary, R. Patt, E. Michael, A. Hacerovskis. The backfield men were: C. Hooker, W. Ellman, J. Hremers, S. Hull, F. J VEE FOOTBALL 1953 The Junior Varsity posted wins over all four of their opponents this season. This record gave them the Little Ten Northern Division Champion- ship for the second straight year. They won their games over Beaver Dam 20 to 12, Berlin 22 to 0, Mayville 25 to 9, and Ripon 47 to 'I. Out oi this team will have to come material to fill the vacancies left by the graduating seniors. They captured the Little Ten Junior varsity basketball championship, and in so doing remained un- beaten in conference play. This was the first time such a feat has been accomplished in Waupun or at least since records have been kept. These fellows should provide us with good material for next year. Jerry Giebink, a guard, was the team's lead- ing scorer. Dave Harper, Wayne Pobanz, Bill Keepers, and Peter Barry make up the rest of the starting lineup. Composing the rest of the squad were Fred McAver, Harry Fehr, Vilas Stringham, Bob Northrup and Delore Prust. Mr. Barkley, veteran in the athletic depart- ment, did the coaching. The Warriors had a very successful year, winning 13 out of their 18 scheduled games. They won 'I conference games while dropping 2. TENNIS 1953 The tennis team this past year had a fairly successful season. Three seniors, Gale Radtke, Richard Rens, and Glendon Giese, supplied the big artillery, while the undergrades gained valuable experience. One of the major highlights of the season was the Little Ten Tournament' held at Westbend. Waupun High School had winners in this com- petitive tournament. These were Gale Hadtke and Dick Rens. This was the first time for many years that Waupun has had a winner in the doubles depart- ment. Also, the Waupun tournament team picked up enough points to place second as an overall team, which helped to brighten the record book. The record for the season was two wins and five losses with one game ending in a draw. GOLF 1953 The 1953 golf squad was composed of all the players from last year, plus the addition of a freshman, Fred Mclver. The team won all the meets but one and they tied on that occasion. When the Little Ten Conference Meet for the championship came up, Waupun tied for fourth place. In 1954 the team had a chance for champion- ship, even though losing four seniors, two of whom were on the main four. This year the squad had a new coach, Mr. Barkley. Next season they hope to have a real iine record. ROW TWO. F. Fehr, F. Michaels, J. Lundstrom, J. Nickerson, R. Erickson, R. McDowell, Coach M. Barkley. ROW ONE: D. Ouster- ling, D. Lenz, W. These are the newest students in our school. They will be graduates of 1959. At first they found it hard to find the various classrooms and some probably missed their recess, but soon they became accustomed to their new surroundings and were off on their education in the high school build- ing. We find many of them participat- ing in Prep Band and Junior High Vocal Groups. Besides being active in the music department many are in- terested in the forensics of Junior High. We know they will have a suc- cessful year and next year take the places of the eighth graders and try to help the incoming seventh graders, realizing how new everyting is to a newcomer. 152- ROW THREE: S. The eighth graders team up with the seventh graders in Prep Band and Junior High Vocal Groups. They are participating in forensics, athletics, and other departments in our high school. Ol course, they are anticipating next year when they will become the Fresh- men and start their career in high school education. The activities they have been so active in will help prepare them to meet the requirements of a good high school student and we are sure they will be a successful class. IHGHTH GRADE ROW THREE: R.
