One of the first proiects they undertook this year was to give the De Arbiders Party a view of what life would be like in Holland City. This was a great event, for the Geleerds well remembered the year they were De Arbiders. The Geleerd Group is using its many talents in various ways. They are pepping up the old Holland spirit in the Dutch City once again by supplying us with a good number of cheer- leaders to back our already blazing teams. DE LAND BOWERS CFARMER PARTY, On September 2, l952, sixty-five Dutch boys donned their blue breeches and wooden shoes, and sixty-one Dutch lasses put on their billow- ing skirts and wooden shoes, and paddled their boats down Waupun's Main Street Canal and right up to the front door of our Holland City High School. Today began their real education. After initiation ceremonies were completed the young ones settled down to the routine of high school life. At first it was difficult to find their way around, but with the help of fellow Hollanders, sense of direction was mas- tered at last, and these young lads and losses soon found favor with both teachers and students. Considering that this was their first year at Holland City High School, the young Hollanders did very well in making the school year of i952- 53 a great success. The boys of the group were found very active in sports. Even though some didn't make the A or B squads, they still received gratefully the training given them and they are determined to use it in future years to help make the all-around sports record of our school as close to lOO per cent perfect as possible. Both boys and girls were found in the various musical activities learning to play Holland music and learning about Holland composers. The Dramatic field also found many of this class interested in Dutch orators, deba- tors, and actors. Many Dutchies participated in the Freshman-Sophomore Forensic contest. Yes, this group of Holland youths had found this school life very nice. ln fact, they decided to return each fall in the boats for three more years. Fellow Hollanders, appraising the deter- mination and the wonderful Holland attitude of these young ones, feel that they will be very capable of filling the wooden shoes in- herited from graduating elders. VARSITY FOOTBALL 1952 The Varsity, coached this year by the former U. of W. star, Bob Petruska, played good ball but suffered a few bad breaks. The Columbus game, cancelled because of polio, was replaced by an intra-squad clash which they called the Army-Navy game. The venture was so successful, it will be re- peated annually. Underdog Army won the first game of this nature by rolling over highly fa- vored Navy by a score of 27 to 14. Max Galler and Fuller McBride were elected co-captains by the team at the end of the sea- son and Dick Watts was voted the Most Valua- ble Player. Dick Thompson, star tackle and extra-point specialist, was the only one in the conference to kick a field goal. JUNIOR VARSITY FOOTBALL 1952 Coach Mel Barkley's Jay Vees finally brought Waupun a conference title. The team lost only one game, that one being a non- conference tilt against Wayland Academy of Beaver Dam. The young Warriors defeated their arch-rivals, Beaver Dam, for the conference crown in their last game of the season. The Jay Vees had a strong running game with Jimmy Barnes, Pete Pike, and Landon Op- perman doing most of the carrying. Their feats would not have been possible without the teamwork of players like Gale Dhein, Tom Peterson, Don Roets, Ronnie Anderson, Fred Micheels and Jack Kremers. All are regarded as fine prospects for the Varsity next season. Third Row-Mr. B. Alberg-Assistant Coach, L. Opperman, W. Ellmann, D. Pike, T. Peterson, H. Schmitz, J. Ball, E. Michael, F. The team started off on the right foot by winning its first five games. Beaver Dam, Sheboygan Central, Oshkosh, Ripon and Columbus all were Warrior victims. Wally Hugdahl's Warriors were within two outs of the conference title before going down at the hands of Ripon in the championship play- off. The Warriors advanced to the play-off game of the regional tournament before being defeated by West Bend, last year's state champs. The team should be strong this year as there were no seniors on last year's squad. Skip Hash, first string catcher and the leading power hitter, was chosen captain of the team at the end of the season. Others on the team were Max Galler, 'lst base, Paul Eberts or Larry Kearley, 2nd base, Earl Krueger, short stop, Bob Henken, third base, John Nummerdor, TRACK 1952 The Warriors had a very good season with twenty men doing the scoring for Waupun. Here is a list of the Warriors who took first places during the regular season and also those who placed at the conference and sectional meets. Wayland, Waupun Meet - Anderson. GOLF 1952 The 1952 golf squad was composed of a young group of boys, but they did very well despite their lack of experience. ln this, the last year that Mr. Schenke coached, the War- rior four finished fifth in the conference meet held on the Rock River Country Club course in Waupun. They also finished well in triangu- lar and quadrangular meets during the course of the season. Since there were no seniors on the squad, the Warriors should have another fine season in 1953. TENNIS 1952 The i952 Warrior tennis team had a fairly successful season. They did well in the tourna- ment, coming in second in team standings at West Bend. Merwyn Mickelson and Gale Radtke, the doubles team, were runners-up in doubles and Dick Rens went to the semi-finals in singles. The record for the season was four wins and four losses with one game ending in a draw. The Warriors were victorious over Oshkosh, West Bend, and twice over Beaver Dam, losing to Fond du Lac twice, Mayville, and Oshkosh. The game which ended in a tie was played with Oconomowoc. The freshmanesophomore game was won by Mayville. Since the team lost only two lettermen, they are looking for- ward to a very successful 1953 season. Second Row-J. Norris, G. Radtke, M. Mickelson, R. J .l UNIOR ROTARIANS Each year nine junior boys are selected by the faculty to be Junior Rotarians. These boys are club members for one month, each having his own month. On every Tuesday during his month the Junior Rotarian goes to the luncheon meeting of the Rotary. On the first meeting of the next month he introduces the next Junior Rotarian. At this time the out-going Junior Ro- tarian speaks on his conception of the function- ing of the Rotary Club. At the final meeting of the school year all nine Junior Rotarians appear and put on the day's program. This year's members were: September ..... Floyd Gray ohnson, C. Hooker, S. Hull, W. Riedeman, A. Kacerovskis, F.Gray, V. Damsteegt, J. G. A. A. The Girls' Athletic Association wasn't very large in size this year, but the members cer- tainly had their share of fun. Dorothy Schmitz was elected President, Kay Swisher, Vice President, Joan Vande Zande, Secretary- Treasurer, and Darlene Harrington, Publicity Editor. Miss Klinger was a wonderful adviser. The club met every Wednesday afternoon and had business meetings once a month. Among the various activities enioyed were field hockey, basketball, swimming, bowling, volley- ball, baseball, roller skating, ice skating, danc- ing, hiking, and an over-night. The club co-sponsored the alumni game and dance, and this year built the float on which the queen and her court rode for Homecoming. lt also provided programs for the tournaments held here and assisted the visiting teams, spec- tators, and officials. The proceeds received from the sale of the programs were used for the purchasing of the W Club iackets given to each senior member of the club. The oficers for the T952-53 year were Presi- dent, Max Galler, Vice President, Fuller Mc- Bride, Secretary-Treasurer, Dick Watts, and Ad- viser, Mr. Barkley. STUDENT COUNCHJ The Student Council, a group of students representing the homerooms of grades nine through twelve, is elected annually. The eigh- teen members which constitute the 1952-53 Council, working with their adviser, Mr. Colman Gadbaw, have sponsored the student buses to games, served lunch to players after the basket- ball games, and arranged and conducted the alumni game and dance. lt is the further privi- lege of the Council to offer suggestions for school improvement to the administration. SENIOR CHEERLEADERS This year we had six Dutch lasses don their black sweaters and skirts and cheer our mighty Dutch Warriors in their athletic endeavors. During this past year they have done much to try to revive that old school spirit. They also introduced many new cheers which have been accepted one hundred percent by our student body. Among these new cheers are The Dollar Yell and We Gotta Fight, Team. These two seemed to be favored most by the cheerleaders and students. Besides finding our cheerleaders very active at every game, they also gave many new and interesting pep assemblies-better and peppier than ever. They participated one hundred percent to help make our '52 Home- coming a grand success. Yes, its hats off to these six lasses and our greatest appreciation for helping our football and basketball teams in this '52-'53 sports year. There will be some big shoes to fill for our next year's cheerleaders, but they can be and we hope we see many of this year's cheerleaders back on the squad next year and LIBRARY CLUB This year there are seventeen members in Library Club. Only students in Senior High are eligible for this organization. There are definite duties that each member has to perform. Mem- bers arrange the circulation, send out overdue notices, shelve books, check in mail, arrange bulletin boards, mend books, and do many other little things that have to be done in the library. Two of the girls also help with the South Ward and Lincoln School libraries. ln order to get credit for work, students must work in the library five periods a week. The Library Club meets every Thursday during seventh hour, at which time members discuss problems that come up in their work. They took part in the in- vitational tournaments at West Bend, Neenah, and Sheboygan. SENIOR HIGH FORENSICS Our high school students again showed a great interest in the various phases of the forensic program. There were participants in humorous and non-humorous declamations, extemporane- ous reading, the four-minute speech, and origi- nal and non-original oration. The extensive program consisted of two local contests, one for freshmen and sophomores, and the other an all-school contest. The contests involving other schools consisted of the follow- ing four: a freshman-sophomore Little Ten con- test, a league, a district, and a state forensic contest. The students participating in the entire forensic program practiced from the middle of January until April. The coaches of the various divisions of the forensic program were Mrs. Draheim, Miss Ains- worth, Miss Johnson, Miss Hill, and Mr. Casper, who is chairman of the forensic department. Third Row- K. WAUBUN Amid millions of pictures, sticky glue, falling rulers, clicking typewriters and flying papers, a group of Senior Hollanders, with the aid of the Junior editor to be, rushed to meet the deadlines that loomed near. Last spring an eye-opening meeting showed an amazed group of Hollanders how much ac- tual work went into the making of a yearbook. Copy reading and writing, typing, soliciting ads, pasting, gathering information, planning and copying dummies, and attending meetings with the publisher ore a few of the iobs con- nected with an annual that very few people know about. All told it was a lot of fun plus a valuable experience for the members of the staff. They are proud of their annual because they appre- ciate the work and the time and material that went into it. With the aid of the adviser, Miss Ainsworth, and the photographer, Mr. Holmes, the year has progressed very satisfactorily. WAUBUNETTE The Holland newspaper, the Waubunette, is the news spreader. It keeps the students, and various organizations, in contact with each other by reporting interesting news and gossip. The Junior High reporters record the headline news twice a month. The news is of many kinds: sports, assemblies, and other school activities. Each issue, a copy of the publication is sent to surrounding schools and we in return receive a copy of each issue of theirs. To make additional money, the staff popped and sold popcorn at the ball games. With Nola Ulrich and Larry Durning as lead- ing editors, the Woubunette has thrived and has been read by almost every student. Fourth Row-J. Maas, B. Guenther, M. Maas, B. Grams, M. Liner, B. GELDERS CCOHIIIIOII People, The Gelders consist of seventy-six students this year, thirty Dutch girls and forty-six Dutch boys. lt was their job to show younger students to the right rooms so that they wouldn't become lost. The Gelders had a few class parties during the year which made them better acquainted with the other eighth grade students. They also took part in many other school activities, which helped the Gelders to get experience for next year when they will advance to Senior High. Such things as the prep band and junior chorus enable them to prepare for senior activities. Junior High football, basketball, and baseball help develop the Dutch boys who will comprise the varsity teams in the near future. This year track was added to the athletic activities of the Junior High. Both boys and girls are on the Waubunette staff and report the Junior High news. Many take part in forensics and are included in Little Ten forensic meets. They are also active in Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts. Along with the seventh grade and freshmen girls, the Gelder girls belong to the J. A. A. The Gelders have had a busy, happy, worth- while year and feel confident of the qualifica- tion for Senior High entry. Third Row-B. Homan, J. Kearley, D. Oppermon, N. Winn, K. Harmsen, M. Pluim, A. GELEERDS fLab0r Group, Last fall we found sixty-three new pairs of wooden shoes lined in a row outside our school door. We soon found out that thirty-six pairs of these shoes belonged to little Dutch maidens and twenty-seven to our smallest Dutch men. The Geleerds found themselves in strange corridors and had a hard time finding their small windmills, but they soon became acquainted with the school and the routine of laws set be- fore them. Soon they found themselves in full swing taking part in extra-curricular activities. Many of the girls are active in J.A. A., which is an athletic association for Junior High and freshmen girls. Also, many of the girls belong to a Girl Scout Troop. The boys are also very active in various or- ganizations. Many of them belong to a Boy Scout Troop. Junior High football, basketball, and baseball are popular among many of the boys. Such activities help to develop the boys who will comprise our varsity teams in the future. The chorus and prep band found talent among our small Geleerds. This year they pre- sented the operetta Old lronsides under the direction of Miss Zache. Both girls and boys are on the Waubunette staff which reports the Junior High news. An- other activitiy which is popular with both boys and girls is Junior High forensics. Some of them attend Little Ten Junior High forensic meets, which are held in a different Holland Village each year. Having gained their foot-hold in the life of Holland City High School, they will be ready to show the new Geleerds where to put their wooden shoes next year. Third Row-W. Wiganowsky, V. Mede, J. JUNIOR HIGH FOOTBALL Instructions for the future varsity were started last fall by Mr. Colton. Their big game, the intra-squad classic, was filled with action and excitement as Larry Southard's team rolled over Delore Prust's team by the score of 31 to 23. The boys enioyed a new experience and many of them found a thrill in the game, which leads to playing an inspired brand of football. Left to Right- J. Kearley, J. Nelson, J. Kno JUNIOR CHEERLEADERS The Junior Cheerleaders this year consist of Bette Swisher from the seventh grade, Susan Mcleod and Judy Kearley from the eighth grade, and Janice Knops, Janice Nelson, and Karen Nyhuis from the ninth grade. They were chosen from a group of about twenty-five girls from the seventh, eighth, and ninth grades. All the boys and girls interested in Junior Cheer- leading try out before the Senior Cheerleaders. They pick the six who will make the best Junior Cheerleaders. The cheerleaders are chosen not only for their cheerleading ability, but also for their personality and appearance. Miss Klinger is the advisor for both the Junior and Senior Cheerleaders. ps, K. Nyhuis, B. Swisher, S. JUNIOR HIGH FORENSICS This year twenty-three Junior High students participated in the forensics program, an one nual event which dates back to its start in l94l. The Junior High Forensic program is divided into four parts: humorous declamations coached by Miss Hill, serious declamations coached by Miss Johnson, extemporaneous reading under the direction of Miss Ainsworth and non-original orations with Mrs. Draheim as coach. If more than two people enter in one sec- tion, elimination contests are held to choose the two top contestants to represent Waupun in the Little Ten Forensic Contest, which was held this year, in Oconomowoc on Wednesday, April fifteenth. Because so many Junior High students are taking part in forensics, we may look forward to having many successful years in the Senior High Forensic Contests. J. A. A. There are approximately forty members in the J. A. A. this year. Activity highlights included the initiation hike to the County Park, swimming at the Wayland pool, bowling, and the Christ- mas party. Free time activities are counted and tabulated determining the awards to be given at the end of the year.
