This group of Councilmen is eighty-five strong and is represented by more girls than boys but yet they seem to make out all right at their parties. The Councilwomen are always present and can be readily seen at all council board meetings having to do with: mixed chorus, library club, band, girl scouts, glee club, G.A.A. fgirls' athletic associationi, prom committee meetings. A few are cheerleaders and all seem to support the activities that don't take place during school hours and are always ready to give a helping hand. The Councilmen can be seen busily attending to their duties which make Waupun High a good, clean and sportsman-like school. They may be seen taking port in: mixed chorus, glee club, prom committee meetings, band, and playing an the basketball and football teams. Several of the boys helped Waupun win a lot of victories in football and basketball, and always played the games as good sports would. Two of the girls worked in a one-act play that went to state and several other members of the class worked on the various committees for the plays during the year. Many of the Councilmen have been keeping up with the ideas of the other countries and also the conditions in this country through debate and forensics. An endeavor of major concern in this year has been the year-long proiect of the Junior prom. Committees have worked on one phase or another of this activity since the council was organized. The careful planning and wise direction accompanying each step of the activity resulted in a beauti- fully executed performance. The training and executive accomplishments of this year have fitted the Councilmen to take their places in the greater community ofthe adult tribe. Secretary: J. Mertens Treasurer: C. SOPHOMORES - THE WARRIORS This is the largest group of warriors we have ever had, in tact, it is 130 strong. This large addition to our tribe has really made our village fHigh Schooli so crowded that you can hardly walk in the halls without being pushed over or stepped on by one of our warriors. It become so crowded, in fact, that we had to build our village a bit larger. This large group of warriors is keeping in good shape this year, too. Many ofthe boys were active in sports: football and basketball, and helped us to defend ourselves so successfully from the attack of other tribes. Several girls were members of G. A. A. fthe girls' athletic associationi. Both boys and girls keep their aims in line by shooting practice in rifle club. 0 They are also keeping their voices in shape for the characteristic calls which accompany their Indian contests. To do this they are very active in the music organizations: mixed chorus, boys' and girls' glee club. Several, in order to keep their voices in shape, have also practiced in debate, foren- presidems sics, and drarnatics. lt is very apparent thot, with this type of material com' Vice President- ing up, our tribe will some day be the greatest in this area. MGX Galle' Also this year the sophomore warriors had to show the newcomers to W.H.S. Mcrllynn Von ESS how to paint themselves properly that they might take their place in the the rank ofthe older tribesmen, or so-called upper clossmen. They did this so successfully that in one afternoon and evening, the young broves were prepared to meet any obstacle that might confront them in their future life in the tribe. This is one of the old customs ofthe tribe and is called initio- tion. To show that there were no hard feelings, the newly inducted broves gave o party for the warriors. They ioined in some ofthe tribal dances. All were again reconciled and all goes well with the tribe. Third Row: D. Harmsen, H. Hopp, G. Hash, A. Third Row: B. Hull, D. Kubasta, H. Loomans, M. There are I29 Braves, making them the largest section of the tribe. ln order to become a regular member of the tribe, the Braves were initiated by the Warriors at the beginning of the year. The ceremonial costumes for this occasion were dictated by the Warriors. After their initiation, the Braves were entitled to take their rightful place among the tribe. They belong to numerous activities and organizations. When it comes to tribal music the Braves really excel. A large number of the Braves are active in the music organizations of Waupun High School. There is a representative of the Braves in every musical group. Many of them are active in the Senior Band. There is a representative of this class in almost all the sections, playing practically every kind of instrument. This year there is also a large number of Braves singing in Mixed Chorus. ln addition to this group, there are many others who sing in either the Bovs' Glee Club or the Girls' Glee Club. Many Braves have athletic skills. The boys use them to good advantage by playing on the foot- ball, basketball, and baseball teams. Many are also members of the golf, tennis, and track teams. A large number of the girls belong to the J. A. A., where they compete in many different sports. Prenden' Both boys and girls belong to the Rifle Club. Many Braves have dramatic abilities. They have put these talents to use by being active in all phases of forensics. The Braves' participation in all these many and varied sports and other activities will help them to become good leaders when it is their turn to become head of the tribe at Waupun High. Then, when they are the Chiefs they will make the trails for others to follow, as they are following the trail laid for them by today's Chiefs. BACK ROW: S. Hinkamp, D. Johnson, D. Johnson, A. We who are the humble braves in the village have had but a taste of all the good things that are yet to come to us during our high school careers. Yet, as we look forward we have high hopes of making our class a successful one and we sincerely want to make each year of high school a better and a more creditable one for us as a class and for the school as a whole. Next year as warriors we will have the opportunity and privilege of warmly welcoming the new braves and looking upon them with pitying l?J eyes as we recall our own intiation experiences. Our year will be full of new and different activities from those we knew as braves. We feel a little superior because we are no longer strangers, but are well acquainted with high school life lwe hopeb. Then an eventful year will end and we will find ourselves filling the places of council-men in the school activities. Newly-acquired class rings will adorn the fingers of Class of '54 students or their steadies. All of our thoughts and actions will be focused upon plans for the great high- light of the year, our prom. We firmly believe that our prom will be ranked among the best ever presented in the village, Our king and queen . . . who knows who they may be, but there certainly is a lot of us to pick from. We'll work hard to make our prom a grand success. Yes, it's fun to work but then, we'll be glad when it's finished and we can once more relax and settle down for the last weeks of school. Then suddenly we will be seniors. It'll hardly seem possible that we ourselves are one of those sophisticated creatures. But, then we will really be kept busy, busier than we have ever been before as we'll prepare to make our exit from the village. Grad- uation pictures and cards will be distributed to close friends and classmates. We think of how we will be participating in many of the activities for the last time as an actual part of them. All of us will become a little more serious about our school-work because we feel that the last impres- sion of us must be a good one. Then the anticipated day will arrive when we, too, will anxiously wait our turn to get our diplomas. That may seem a long way off now, but it really isn't. Girls' Glee Club There are approximately 90 members in the Girls' Glee Club. These students are taken from the four upper grades of Waupun High School. The glee club meets every Tuesday, seventh hour, under the direction of Miss Ann Seibel. Until two years ago the Girls' Glee Club was the main vocal group in Waupun High. Now the club prepares members to sing in the Mixed Chorus. About half of the glee club members also sing in the Mixed Chorus. The size of the Glee Club indicates that many students enjoy singing together. All members of the Girls' Glee Club may sing solos or sing in ensembles, and enter the solo-ensemble contest held in the spring one week before the Music Festival. This year the Girls' Glee Club will enter the Music Festival at Ripon in Class C. Boys' Glee Club The Boys' Glee Club consists of about 30 members who are selected from the tour upper grades of Waupun High School Tribe. This group meets during the seventh hour every Thursday under the direction of Miss Ann Seibel. The Glee Club was organized to prepare students for singing in the mixed chorus. Many of the members now sing in both the glee club and the chorus. In the past the boys have not had much opportunity to participate in vocal music. Though they meet for only half an hour every week, they have been making a lot of progress. This spring the boys' Glee Club will enter the Music Festival at Ripon. It will be the Grst time they have entered and we are sure all their hard work will pay oft. We hope more students will take an interest in this organization and enlarge the group. FIRST ROW: C. Editor-in-chief Milton Hillery and his corps of writers and producers have endeavored to cover the news angles of the tribe and present them in newsworthy manner for public reading. Among the notable changes in Waubunette this year was the new style of paper. We have been using an offset lithography which enables us to have cartoons and pictures for the first time in our career. Also, this year the Waubunette has become identified with popcorn! The school has purchased a popcorn machine which various organizations may use to earn money. The Waubunette has helped to clear up a financial obligation in this manner. FOURTH ROW: D. Brinkman, A, Vande Zande, I. Pluim, A. Lange, L. Durning, D. Redman, M. Hillery, J. Dhein. Eighth Grade The eighth grade has seventy-nine little braves this year which include thirty-five girls a nd forty-four boys. It was their iob to show younger papooses to the riqht teepees so that they wouldn't become lost. Their Chiefs are much the same as last year but they find the work a little harder. They elected class officers who are: Willie Ellmann, president: Dick North- ., ,- d . C x rup, vicevpresident: Joan Vande Zande, secretary-treasurer. They had a few class parties during the year which made them better acquainted with the other eighth grade braves. The little braves take port in many of the school activities. These help them to get 1 , experience for next year when they will be in Senior High. There are seventy-nine of them in the tribe.. The first week or so they found it hard to find their way through the hundreds ol tribesmen in the halls and get to their teepees, but they soon were able to find any teepee in the village IHigh Schooli. These youngsters thought it would be terrible not to have two recesses a day but they soon forgot about that. They elected tribal officers for their class and they are: President Larry Larson, Vice-President Marjorie Johnson, and Secretary-Treasurer Billy Keepers. They had a tribal dance early in the year where they became better acquainted with their fellow hopefuls. The papooses also take part in many tribal activities. The boys prepare for the time when they will be able to defend the tribe from attack by taking part in gym, Junior High football, basketball, and baseball among themselves. Many of them also belong to Boy Scout troops. The girls participate in sports in gym classes, J.A.A. Uunior Girls' Athletic Associationi, and Girl Scouts. Both boys and girls keep their voices in shape by participating in speech departments. They work hard for weeks preparing for the village speech tournament. The winners of the Junior High tournament go to the Little Ten Junior High tournament which is held at a diHerent village each year. Many of the papooses take music and so they participate in the tribe's Prep Band which is under the direction of Big Chief Johnson. This band prepares them for parti- cipation in the tribe's Senior Band. All in all these youngsters had a successful year W, KEEPERS Secretary-Treasurer and next year they will be the ones to show the new papooses to their teepees. BACK ROW: C. Reabe, P. Ruck, E. Girl Scouts These are the first years of Girl Scouting for the Junior High girls. They have flown up from the-Brownie Scouts to Girl Scouts. During this period the girls work on Second Class badges and then see how far they can go toward their First Class badge. These troops have a definite time for their meetings. The troop otticers conduct their meetings with the help of their leaders. Some troops have assistants, many ot whom are Senior Scouts. The Scouts have cookie sales and go on hikes, and swimming and skating parties. Sometimes these we-fl EQ? activities help in earning badges, Boy Scouts There are three troops of Junior High Boy Scouts, the combined member- ship of which numbers seventy. The Junior High Troops are formed for the purpose of giving the boys training for Senior Scouting. Their activities are much the same as the Senior Scouts. They work hard for diliferent ranks in the troop, but that doesn't keep them from having other activities. They have wrestling, boxing, swimming, go on hikes, and also collect money for their troops by having paper drives. They meet regularly at the South Ward School with their leaders. FOURTH ROW: L.
