BRONCO Wauneta, Nebraska Schools 1985-1986 It is my sincere wish that this school year has been a most satisfying one for you. Many of the things which we set out to do have become accomplished facts. I feel that we have gone forward in the right direction, and I give credit for this to the splendid cooperation given the administration by the student body, faculty, the board of education, and the citizenship of Wauneta in general. I wish for the outgoing students the very best, and hope that those of us who are left behind can continue to work for a better Wauneta High, and that we may make as much progress next term as we have this, toward that goal. (From yearbook 1967) Wauneta's school system is very ably headed by new Superintendent Bill Matthews. His sincere interest in the students and his excellent executive ability are evident to everyone. Mr. Matthews was formerly high school principal at Morton, Texas. He holds B.A. and M.A. degrees from Adams State College, Colorado and is doing graduate work at the University of Arizona and Texas, Tech. (From yearbook 1967) FAREWELL Students bid farewell to Mr. Matthews and his family after twenty years of service to Wauneta students and community. Mr. and Mrs. Matthews and their children, Mark, Steve, and Jennifer have been a part of Wauneta Schools and have contributed as administrator, teacher, and students. Mr. Matthews' strong desire to offer students the best education possible has left a positive impact on students and teachers that will last through their life times. Waunetans wish you well, Matthews family, and look forward to your visits home. An association of twenty years with a community of people and a school such as we have here in Wauneta is its own reward for whatever work we've accomplished and it is with no small regret that I and my family leave to work elsewhere. Whatever sense of home we possess is now firmly rooted in Wauneta and this school. It is with those very special and warm thoughts reserved for home folks that we say goodbye and honestly thank you for twenty years of patience with our faults and for being our friends. It is much too early for the new superintendent to know what a class' group of people he'll be living and working with, but be patient, he'll learn. 2 Bronco Boosters Jon Broadbent Bill Matthews ADMINISTRATION Board Of Education Back row: Darrold Eberhardt, Kenny Smith, Rick Einspahr, Rod Wheeler Front row: Karen Christner, Jo Arenz Grimm's Hardware The Wearhouse 3 Tom McConnell Kevin Coleman ESU Psychologist Not Pictured I Cermit Brown John Thompson Ryan Benner Gary DeWester Gary Goodchuck I la Widger Marge Hanna Denis Janicek Velma Hromas 4 Jim McKinney Patsy, McKinney Wauneta Breeze Lois Wine Shirley Petsch Sharon Travis Nina Fortkamp Donna Applegarth Iris Nelson Roger Lauhead Joyce Matthews Wauneta School Faculty Janice Cribelli Nancy Malcolm Robin Katzer Juanita Leonard Wauneta Breeze 5 Teachers I can never stay awake. n r Harchelroads Chevrolet If you dress like me you'll get chicks too! Wauneta Pharmacy CLASS HISTORY OF 1986 In September 1973 — Nineteen eager kindergarten tots Teresa Brewer, Paul Brunkhorst, Todd Cox, Linda Dizmang, Brandie Hays, Brookie Hunt, Elizabeth Lines, Troy Littrel, Heidi Maxfield, Marti McBride, Debra McGregor, Barbara Muths, Kathleen O'Neil, Kris Polly, Kelly Rowley, Kristin Troudt, Stephanie Fekkers, Katrina Collins and Lori Belden greeted our teacher Mrs. Prior. The things we remember most about this year were our plane ride to Mexico and all of the times we tried to eat that yummy Birthday cake. In first grade we met Mrs. Creger. Boy were we impressed. We were all in one big class now and we added to our class Michelle DeWester, Mark Garton, and Gerald Crider. We were quite the happy crew. We showed our talent in the kitchen when we made pancakes and of course our coloring skills improved. In second grade we joined forces as thick thumb, great lip and big foot to perform the all time, Three Spinning Fairies. This year also brought the taste of Mrs. Fortkamp's nibble bucket on Friday afternoons. That is why Crystal Carfield joined our class. Katrina Collins, Barbara Muths, and Gerald Crider left because we couldn't try our hand at the nibble bucket daily. Treci Raffaeli and Joe Ruiz only stayed for a few months, probably because of the Big Foot scare that was on at that time. In third grade, Mrs Applegarth's red hot fever attracted Matt Green and Donald Morgan. It was so hot we all decided to stay. Matt thought it was a little too hot when all the girls went chasing after him. We all know that he loved it but won't admit it. This was definitely our year of games with kick ball and 13 skudoo. In fourth grade the construction of our Willa Cather village was the main event. Terry Brott added to the mischief and those who joined us temporarily — Tonya Swartz, Tony Woodward, Patricia Kincaid, Sandra Tucker — also joined in to help. Mark Garton and Brookie Hunt left because Mrs. Petch took away too many of our recesses. In fifth grade we were in the best shape ever! Mr. Lauhead generally made us start our morning with a mile run. We went into the printing business with Big Red Events. This major print carried everything from cartoons to famous last names to the latest happenings. Lynette Harper and Kevin Lambert came to join in on our first major publication. In sixth grade, we got those big stud lockers. Boy were we cookin' when we got to go to one room for Science and a different one for English. The stunning New Inventions Swing Choir appeared this year and so did Troy Farr. Wilda Morgan joined only for a short time as she had other places to go. In seventh grade we all seemed to be hit with the dating game fever. WOW! We took a historical trip to Wyoming for the 8th grade class trip (without the 8th grade). They refused to ride with us aristocratic 6th and 7th grade. Scott Grams came to join forces with Elizabeth to be the dating game sensors. Patricia Kincaid was fed up with the whole thing and decided not to stay long. Troy Farr and Lynette Harper left us on one of those Wyoming rendezvous. In eighth grade we added Dorothe True. Mark Decker, and Linda Dizmang to help on the big graduation plans. Graduation was our first important milestone. We all had big plans to work in the Chase County area after attending college at either Hamlet Community or Enders University. Finally we are Freshman, the big realization comes that it is everybody's turn to pick on us. The boys often found themselves crawling under the seats on that freshly mopped bus floor after a game, just because a Senior wanted him to. The girls were treated pretty cool except for the occasional head whams we would encounter from the upper classmen. The upper classmen were no threat for Todd Barnard and Jonna Napier. Julie Light and Wilda Morgan weren't too sure of WHS so they didn't stay long and Linda Dizmang, Terry Brott, and Crystal Carfield didn't even stay to give it a try. As sophisticated Sophomores we tended to sit back like cool cats and wait for our Junior year. Some of us bloomed at Prom when we were attired in pastel petals. This year we could still get away with childish acts and immature thinking. The big question was, Will they ever grow up? Flossie McAfoos and Crystal Carfield joined us on selecting our class rings. Chris Harouff joined for a short time and we lost Todd Cox and Jonna Napier. We are climbing up the ladder to our Junior year. The dreaded magazine sales were a real excitement as Matt and Don mastered the art of cheating so that we could embezzle more money for Prom. Todd Cox joined us again and we even surprised the Seniors by pulling off our generic Prom. ACT tests awakened a few of us early on our Prom day, but we survived! We all waited for the day the Seniors left so we could finally fill their shoes in the upcoming year. Crystal Carfield left us at the end of the year. There are nineteen Seniors, nine of whom stuck together like glue for the past thirteen years, through the good times and the bad. Soon we, the CLASS OF 1986, will be leaving this student body and will be taking an important step in our future. With us we will take our individual dreams and thoughts and memories, many of which were molded in these halls and rooms of Wauneta High School. With our well trained minds there is nothing we cannot do! 76 Bronco Boosters SENIOR CLASS PROPHECY Year 2025 Here we are in beautiful downtown Athens; in Greece, of course! I am Deb McGregor your hostess for this flight and your host is Mark Decker, owner of this elite airline, which he has just purchased from Aristotle Onassis. We are now leaving on board flight number 486 from Athens to New York. We arrive just in time for Shelly DeWester's 25th Anniversary showing. Shelly is celebrating twenty-five consecutive years as the world s top fashion designer. From here we go to Boston by Rolls Royce. We see Matt Green play with the Boston Celtics. Neeldess to say they won. Before we left Boston we took in a concert and were surprised to find Flossie McAfoos the lead singer. We have a long trip from Boston to Detroit, Michigan, where we find Todd Cox as President of the Ford Motors Corp. He tells us that Kevin Lambert and Todd Barnard are traveling throughout the country wrecking cars as fast as he can make them. They work as Dare Devils. Kevin drives and Todd pays for all. Watch out all you safe drivers! Also in Detroit we find Heidi Maxfield and Elizabeth Lines working as processors for the Betty Crocker Corp. From there we travel to Holland, Michigan, which happens to be the tulip capitol. Here we find Kelly Rowley who is a leading tulip farmer. Just before we leave Michigan we stop in to visit Scott Grams who experiments in the crossbreeding of ducks. His latest development has been a new breed of duck called Super Ducks. We have a long drive from Michigan to Wauneta, where our old high school used to be. Here we went to see Troy Littrel, who is running his Mousetrap factory with quite some success. While at the factory, he filled us in on the latest news in the old home town. He told us that the old school is rocking as Marci McBride is a part time Resource teacher and the rest of her time is spent still playing tricks on the ancient Jon Broadbent. Troy also says from what he has heard Marci's children are going a step further to writing a book entitled, My Mom's Best Excuses, Vol. 10. As we were leaving, the phone rang and Troy related some fantastic news. The former Kathleen O'Neil just surpassed her goal of thirteen children by one. Congratulations! After spending time in Wauneta, we decided to soak up a little sun, so we flew to California. At the airport we saw a dazzling and eyecatching ad. We were so stunned that we had to find the origin of such a masterpiece. We were informed that it was one of Dorothe True's works. She is the best-known commercial artist in the country. Then, odd as it may seem, we saw Don Morgan walking through the terminal and asked what he was doing. We had heard that he was a computer engineer. He said he had been, but automation just replaced him; we offered our condolences and went on our way. A couple of days later we flew to Washington, D.C. on our way home. Here we found Kris Polly as Speaker of the House, which really never surprised us much. He told us that Jim McKinney, our former class sponsor has finally made it to the White House. There is only one drawback; it's only in a janitorial position. Keep trying Mr. McKinney! Stephanie is Chief of Staff at Walter Reed Army Hospital, where she is now taking care of Mr. McKinney. It seems he had a slight accident; when he opened his broom closet everything fell out upon his body. Hope you're feeling better, Mac! VE, THE CLASS OF 198o, will ourselves to the world and its riches! 77 Bronco Boosters I i i i Debra McGregor Valedictorian Seniors' If If you have learned mistakes are ways of learning That all will make, that teachers are your friends. That they are best when they are most demanding. And that your education never ends; If you have learned that grades are rings on targets Put there to help you hit the mark. And that if you're a cheater, you're the cheated To turn from truth and light to choose the dark; If you have learned that facts are tools of learning To help you think, that judging is your aim To find the facts then weigh in balanced measure And count that good which has the better claim; If you have learned that rules are made for reasons The purpose being that they help us all. And that the heart in youth will have its seasons And like the tides of spring will rise and fall; If you have learned to laugn, but not at others. And to be clean in body, soul and mind. If you have learned that you best star in teamwork. And most of all the gift of being kind; If you have learned that you must serve to master And having mastered, then you owe your best. If you can smile when you have met disaster And start to work again with greater zest; If you have found all men are really brothers And that together we must rise or tall. That he who does the most in helping others Is at the last the greatest of us all; If you regard your promise once it's given As sacrea as an altar's holy flame And treasure most of all things under heaven Your self-respect as well as your eood name; If you have learned that error's often lauded That truth is very difficult to find. You will have earned that coveted diploma And what is more, you'll have a well trained mind.
