And Their Cheering Squad Vicky’s Country Salon Seniors Off For Kansas City Senior's In Action! Walgrens SuperMarket Senior Trip! At 2:10 on Wednesday, May 5, the Seniors took off for their visit to Kansas City and stops along the way. They first stopped at Historic Abilene, Kansas, where they visited the Dwight D. Eisenhower Library and his memorial, and also viewed the Chapel where his body is laid to rest. From there they headed to Kansas City, Missouri, where they stayed from Friday noon until Sunday Morning. But there was a stop enroute at Independence, Missouri, where they stayed at the YMCA Camp and had to rough it a night. Many a strange thing happened that night and only a very few are sure just what they were. From Friday night until Saturday morning at 5:30 the class visited Worlds of Fun where they enjoyed many types of rides as well as a Live Concert by Eric Carmen; Featuring his Hit Song, All By Myself. Saturday Night was highlighted by a class dinner at Italian Gardens; many people had Fillet Mignon, some Lobster Tail, but everyone enjoyed themselves. Sunday morning the group left at 9, and hedded for the Kansas City Airport where most every body enjoyed themselves. From there they headed for St. Joseph Mo., where they viewed the home of Jesse James—where he was shot and Killed. They headed home and arrived at about 10 p.m. , and each realized memories woven on this trip could be kept with them for a life time. 16 Wauneta Breeze Graduating Class Of 1976 FRONT ROW, LEFT TO RIGHT— Tena Lorimer, Nancy Vapenik, Vicky Jussel, Sharia Nordhausen, Mark Fanning, Rex Kerchal, Tim Creger, Merlin Meuller, SECOND ROW LEFT TO RIGHT— Class Sponsor; Gary Goodchuck, Deb Creger, Dave Jussel, Jan Salyer, Jim Knotwell, Jerry Littrel, Nancy Hanna, Robert Gage. Posters were made and awards given away along with a skating party for Hamlet students to encourage scholarship, and character was stressed by spending a day with these students. Leadership and service came together as the group went on the CROP walk. The group also planned Honors Night. All in all it was a rewarding year. Stock lass of 1901 (Grade 9); No •ecord Reactin', Writin' And 'Rithmetic In Review Wauneta Schools 1899-1976 80 Early settlers in Wauneta realized that a school was essential. Miss Geddie Madoraiz from Beverly was hired for the first term in 1887. In 1888 District 31 was organized and Miss Fay Doty taught in a small building that was moved to the site. The first enrollment was 10 or 12 students. Desks were home made and fortunate students had slates and pencils. By 1891 school was moved to the upstairs of the Doty Store. Prof. Quiggle taught several years. A building constructed of locally fired brick was completed in 1893 at a cost of about $2,000. Factory made desks were purchased. During the troubled mid '90's many people left the area and enrollment fell. Special educational entertainment including spell-downs, ciphering, mental arithmetic, and debate were included. Prof. Dan Killen was the first high school teacher as ninth grade was added in 1898. The turn of the century brought many firsts for Waunetans—first light plant, first telephone service, W.C.T. U., theater, brass band, and a variety of shops. Additional teachers were Merle Williams, W. D. Cave, and Miss Greta Grosbach. A science lab was installed. The first interschool athletic contest was a baseball game in which Wauneta defeated Imperial in 1913. Agriculture was taught in 1914. A new building was constructed in 1916 for approximately $20,000. Buggy rides were popular entertainment of the day—especially the early start, late return variety. Class of 1916; Velma Bailey Bothwell, Dean Barnes, Wylie Colbert, Kenneth Harvey, Vivian Hoff Thompson, Opal McCartney Parker, Charlotte Ryan, Carl Wright, Class of 1917; Nelson Burham, Ruth Deininger Christensen, Beulay Hamm Olmsted, Reminiscening back a few years the classes of 1916-1920 were tossed to and fro—the Methodist church. Odd Fellows Lodge, and the house which is located west of the school. One might laugh at the girls basketball uniforms if you can imagine large bloomers and white middies compared to the 1970's. Among the activities they too ended the year with graduation. One recalls graduation in the old theater building and she being the only girl spotlighted in a swing surrounded by male classmates. The church parlors were converted into a Dutch flower garden. The favors were wooden shoes. At the place of each senior was a rose, their class flower. Glaydes McCartney was honored as valedictorian and Mabel McGooden received the salutatorian award. For Sneak Day the 1929 class motored to North Platte where airplane rides afforded them many thrills. They returned via McCook to see WEARY RIVER at the World Theater. Wiley Green won first place in the pole vault in Frenchman Valley Track Meet. Scholarships: Helen VonStade, 1st; Delores Theobald, 2nd; Beryl Crowell, 3rd. Dr. George Frasier, President of Colorado State College, Greeley, Colorado, gave the graduation address. Mae Grimm sang In the Garden of My Heart. Not the Sunset, but the Dawn, was the 1930 class motto. Delman Engell wrote the class poem. Wauneta was visited by a severe snow storm on May 17. The Latin Club boasted 21 members. Oh Boy! The seniors were a sick looking bunch, trotting around with a paint brush and a disappointed look—no juniors to harass. In 1932 Lawrence Rueter placed 3rd in chemistry in the Academic Contest in McCook. Russel Polly was known as the silver-tongued orator of the class. The paper was known as HIGH SCHOOL STATIC. The banquet room was a beautiful Garden in Hawaii. Four year scholarships: Kenneth McGooden, 1st; Bruce Resler, 2nd; Lawrence Rueter, 3rd. During the heart of the depression, another tragedy struck—THE SCHOOL HOUSE BURNED! Students, who thought their Christmas vacation of 1932-33 would be an extra long one, found themselves attending classes in churches, basements of homes, and any other available space. The next school year started in the $35, 000 re-built structure with Ruth Phillip, Iral (Swede) Anderson, Helen Knollenberg, and Supt. Glen Olson among our educators. Our sneak trips were to North Platte, McCook, and even as far away as Sterling, Color., where we visited the sugar beet factory. The miniature golf course behind the old Falls Hotel and Milt Moreland's Cafe were our popular hang-outs. 1934 Warren Ady, Verl A they, Lucille Crowell McCormick, Merle DeHart Fortkamp, Margaret Emerick Mondt, Opal Gestring Fortkamp, Phyllis Green Bonham, Morris Grimm, Veva Hamilton, Hazel Herbert, Homer Hoff, Charlene Johnston Kitt, Eunice Lorance Crow, Aileen Lowe Luxford, Nellie McBride Jeffers, Keith Mc-Callum, Urcell McCartney, Urlin McCartney, Gwendolyn McGooden Hosie, Evelyn Olmstead Williams, Phyllis Peterson Beal, Rose Redden, Martha Rose Resler Smuckler, Emma Seigel Hoff, Maxine Steggs Pierson, Ethel Stretch Bridgeman, Orin Troxel, Roberta Tuttle Blobaum, Cecilia Voda, Marvel Wheeler Miller. 1935 Nellie Anderson Harris, Myra A they Bradbury, Esther Brown Lip-pencott, Virginia Cox Motter, Ruth Gauger Juctice, Marjory Gregory Engell, Marie Grimm Weimer, Lucille Hamilton Clark, Owen Hixon, Eva Kerchal Polly, Josephine Kitt, Elwyn Krau-snick, Beatrice Lewis Walker, Keith Lewis, Leslie M. Thus, we were not allowed a sneak day when we became Seniors. But, we persuaded the janitor, Mr. Wade, to sponsor the group and we took our sneak day on Saturday. Remember '36: School Night was a big success, Senior play Dollars to Doughnuts (Ask Jr. Ough what was going on behind the scenes at the play), Wauneta and Grant tied in tennis matches, the swell sneak to Greeley triangular track meet, mountains, and Denver with not everyone making it home at the same time, the Top Hat Night Club banquet. They have scored often and have played a good game throughout their lives. The score is untallied as they continue to pursue more home plates. 1941 The Door of Knowledge is Labeled 'Push' captured the feeling of this large number of graduates. The key word Push describes this group well, as they have forged ahead and have accomplished a great deal. Many doors have been opened and great gains have been achieved. 1942 We Are Now at the Foothills, the Mountains Lie Beyond expressed the ambition of this group as, indeed, they have conquered mountains and have made important strides onward and upward to conquer new horizons and to gain success and happiness. 1943 Tonight We Launch, Where Shall We Anchor? was the motto chosen by this class during World War II. They did set sail and have gained much wisdom, understanding and success. Where have they anchored? Never. They are still braving the ocean waves—going on to further seas! 303 5 Class of 1942: Ronald Acton, Donald Anderson, Rueben Bartels, Verna Brown Sandman, Genevieve Burham Eskew, Orville Coen, Delbert Crowell, Bonnie d'Allemand Von Pien, Esta Davis Richards, Ivan Denker, Elinor Engel Denker, Lowell Grimm, Victor Haarberg, Charles Hanna, Frank Hatch, Clyde Hoff, Norman Hold-erby, Leona Kanost Vandiver, Neva Kanost (not married) Alma Keiser McBride, Virgil Kerchal, Otis Knotwell Jr., Virginia Littrel Krausnick, Emma Jean Maxfield Maris, Bill McBride, Betty Norman Carey, Kathryn Novacek Arenz, Virginia Novacek Jesser, Lawrence Philpott, Clair Sims, Lorean Stephenson, Wilma Stinnette Allen, Leslie Stretch, Lloyd Stretch, Fern Troxel Dillon, Beth Von Stade Rowton, Betty Von Stade McGhee, Orville Widger, Maxine Willsey Ele Class of 1943 Richard Bradley, Dean Christner, Donna Christner Hayes, LaRue Christner Gunderson, Thelma Colson Graham, Irene DeHart Wright, Laveme Denker, Wayne Einspahr, Donald Embree, Dorothy Embree Schrack, Donna Fanning Applegarth, Don Fletcher, Forrest French, Larry Hayes, Dwight Hoff, Lu-ella Kennedy Terry, Donnaline Kerns Kitt, Elna Rae Kitt West, Neil Kitt, Myra Krausnick Grimm, Charles Long, Joy McCallum Cowles, Shirley Morrison Riel, Elfrieda Nordhausen Johnston, Joyce Novacek Forsyth, Lloyd Romine, Lloyd Redden, Raymond Sexson, Virginia Sexson Fay, Leatha Stevenson Bischoff, Leon Stinnette, Jack Sutton, Frances Voda Jewell, Bonnie West Winkleman, Wanda West Winkleman, LaDene Wheeler Hudnall Class of 1944 Duana Barnes Borden, Gladys Bis-choff Jeffries, Francis Bowman Hatch, Delpha Brown Nordhausen, Euline Brunkhorst Busking, Duane Burham, Arnold Christner, Dorothy Colson Medley, Margaret Crane Burham, Del Decker, Berdeen Donze Yost, Lila Rae Fletcher Gradisar, Donna Fox Ber-ggren, Glenard Greene, Viola Green Fanning, Eldon Haarberg, Norma Mohr Rhone, Elmer Reiser, Betty Knotwell Jah-orek, Gladys Long, Dwight McBride, Bruce Morrison, Lois Olmstead Lant, Florence Oyer Crowder, Charles Sandman, Vesta Shackleford Athey, Twyla Shoemaker Sandman, Mary Ann Stewart Haarberg, Lois Stock Lane, Dorothy Stretch Wadhams, Anita Taylor Reade, Delores Terry Lacasse, Dorothy Terry Steckman, Jack Terry, Louise Webster Balius, Dale Zarecor. Strange outfits for that day were dictated and stunts were performed by the freshmen. The FHA was organized in 1948. That winter was the blizzard that closed roads and schools in the area. Bobby sox and rolled up jeans were the style; with skirts going down in length. New band uniforms were purchased in 1949. The Frenchman Valley boys basketball tournament was a big thing with the area pep clubs vying for top honors with their drill formations. The world problems were far away. Our biggest worries were grades, what to wear, ballgame scores, music contest ratings, fast cars, and the opposite sex. Band, glee, choir, and sports were before school, during the noon hour, and after school and since buses were unknown parents drove us everywhere. Some of the girls stayed in apartments in town. E eryone was clothes conscious with boys wearing their hair in flat tops and crew cuts. Their jeans were always rolled up to show argyle sox. Looking to appearances, the students in Wauneta underwent a great change in dress. Skirts went from knee length to mini and female students were finally allowed to wear slacks to school, with the change in the dress code in 1970-71. Men began to wear longer hair and facial hair, in a small way reflecting the hippie movement. We did very individualized kinds of dancing, too, in the 'jerk' and the 'swim'. Students were also changing in their attitudes about themselves, their school and the world. To reflect the unrest on our nations college campuses, Wauneta High staged a walkout of their own in '69-'70 which proved very convincing, and the issue involved was brought out into the open for all to see. Through all this unrest and change, students were still seeking answers to questions that all men ask about themselves and what their short lives really mean. We should look upward for the answers, as students and as a country, will hear us in our humility and He will heal our land and souls. The draft ended, the Vietnam War over, and the beginning of the political witch hunt of Watergate. The dress length went from mini's to maxi's and up again to the knee. But blue jeans were the thing, representing an easy living style and a demand for comfort. Many more feet have trod the halls of our beloved school and have brought new ideas, new rules, and new facilities. We have a new Ag Shop, and a new announcer's booth graces the gridiron. The time has passed quickly and as we continue into the next era we take with us hope for the future and dreams of peace. Class of 1974: Kathy Armstrong, Glen A .
