LJWJ PI 5 E '- i. f 5 3 a 2 E E if , E Cdlau The second week in September, 1945, saw 33 eager students enrolled as Freshman in Waunakee High School. This was the beginning of a long but exciting and pleasant four years. Shortly after school began, the anxiously awaited initiation by the Juniors took place. The class officers for our first year were3.Fred Friedrich, president, Mary Lou Schmitz, vice-president, Sally Endres, secretary, and Bob Karls, treas. Un Halloween, we gave our first party in return for initiation. About half the class joined the band under the direction of Mr. Heim. The tournament was held in Columbus in May of that year. When our Sophomore year rolled around, we had lost six of our former classmates. Verne fMousiel was a standout in football and many of the Sophomore boys participated in athletics. Charlene Endres was chosen as one of our cheerleaders this year. The distributing of the gifts by Bob Schmitz as Santa, proved to be the highlight of our Christmas party which was held December 17. Rachel Bacon, Bob Schmitz, and Howard Becker represented our class in Forensics under the direction of Miss Snyder. The band went to Bara- boo for the tournament. As Juniors, our class numbered 25 at the beginning of the year. A busy year was ahead for all of us. .First on our schedule was the initiation of the freshmen. Rachel Bacon was the only Junior who part- icipated in Forensics. Junior girls who participated in the Centennial celebration were Mary Lou Schmitz as 'Miss Waunakee', and her handmaidens: Merle Rabe, Loretta Kaltenberg, Dolores Haber, and Beverly Wipperfurth. The Junior Prom, our largest undertaking of the year, was held on May 7. White, yellow, and green streamers and assorted balloons laid the setting for our theme, 'Mardi Gras.' Music for dancing was furnished by Randy Marshal and his orchestra. Verne Nesvacil and Sally Endres reigned as King and Queen. This year, the band, under the direction of Mr. Heim, motored to Richland Center for the band tournament. Our homecoming parade in the fall included the band and floats from each class. Sally Endres reigned as homecoming queen at the Homecoming dance and her Court of Honor consisted of Beverly Wipperfurth, Dolores Haber, Loretta Kaltenberg, and Mary Lou Schmitz. In October, we had our class pictures taken and received them for Christmas. A new addition was made to our school by the 'Warrior', school newspaper, and achieved success in every way. The Senior class play, 'We Shook the Family Tree', under the direction of Mrs. Zachow, was held in December. Later a pot-luck supper was held for everyone concerned. The local Forensics contest was held in March with Rachel Bacon again the only participant from our class. A trip to Chicago was planned instead of the traditional Senior banquet. Our last weeks were busy and exciting ones and have seemed so short to all of us. The Prom, school picnic, and graduation are now behind us. Now three years later there are 26 of us left and although we are less in number we feel we are more accomplished. Lucille Ripp is the only Junior who left school this yeah Sports claimed the interest of many of the boys. Basketball stars included Stan Spahn, Lowell Smith, and Bob Gilles. Football included Dave Miller, Pete Smith, Ken Taylor, and Bob Gilles. Lucille Grosse was the first girl of our class to be elected a cheerleader. The Junior Class is well represented in band this year. Members include Doris Ripp, Cleanore Endres, Phyllis Carter, Joan Kessinech, Lillian Theis, Mary Ann Meffert, Leona Wipperfurth, Mary Lou Hellenbrand and Betty Becker. Audrey Reis and Joann Heinz are two of the five twirlers, Audrey leading the band as drumn majorette. Mrs. Zimmerman the band director, was Junior Class advisor. The only member of the Junior Class to take part in forensics was Stella Brabender. It was the night of May 6th, that the big moment arrived, when the Junior Class Prom was held. The Grand March was lead by prom king Dave Miller and his queen Joan Kessinech. The final activity of the Junior year was the school picnic at which the Juniors acted as hosts to the Seniors. 1? wa UH H ' 1' m 1 ii? fu-1: W. 94 x:'f'l' 1 -yr..Ae. - , b -.. il ,, . F , . Among these were three newcomers, Clarence Bosben, Ervin Dedie, and Jack Elliot. During the course of this year we lost four students, Joann Kemp, Bernard Brausen, Betty Stejskal, and Clarence Bosben. The main event of the year was the Christmas party which the Sophomores gave on December 14. It was under the supervision of Miss Michel and turn- ed out to be a big success. - Outside activities occupy the leisure time of most of the forty-two students. Twelve boys part- icipated in football and fourteen in basketball. Band, chorus, and forensics, are some of the other activities in which many of the Sophs. participated. Carole Bernards and Beverly Kruel are two of the four cheerleaders. Carole is also a twirler. During the past two years this active group has accomplished much and we can expect much more in the future, because of the splendid school spirit the class has manifested so far. Qil 5 l C V4 . The purpose of this organiiation was to improve athletics, sportsmanship, and teamwork. In order to become a member of the club, the person must have earned a major or minor letter in football or basketball. Money is raised by dues, selling refreshments at games, and sponsering dances. This money helps to pay for a trip which the club takes every year. The charter members of the club are: Verne Nesvacil, Bob Schmitz, Fred Friedrich, Dennis Peldbruegge, Dick Lange, Ronald Hellenbrand, Wesly Reis, Don Puhler, Bob Karls, Leon Nesvacil, Hugh Pederson, Marvin Maly and George Oncken. The officers are: Vern Nesvacil, President, Pete Smith, Vice-President, Dave Miller Sergeant-at-Arms, and lbb Karlg Treasurer. The Banquet was held on March 175 Ur. Loomis can well be congratulated for his fine work with the boys and can justly be proud of the team that he developed. Dave 'Tick' Hiller was high scorer with S6 points and his teammates elected him Most Valuable Player. Bob Schmitz was captain. Highlights of the season were the De- forest and Mazo games. It was the first time in school history that Deforest was ever defeated by us. We had won three straight games and were undefeated until we tackled Mazo in the deciding game. Our boys led at the half, but fell behind in the second to go down in defeat 31 to 14. This was the last year of six man foot- ball as Wannakee has decided to play eleven man next year. f 45941 K' f ,,,f' QD-M , -vs-u,..4 t ht- , ,- . ,V . 3 .. . . f W1 ' 3 .7- 1 Y E' r- ' I . 4 . . in .3 .l 1 x p.
