Winter Sports and Semester Exams january January 3rd, the varsity squad met the W.H.S. alumni in a riotaus basketball game. After a battle royal, our supercharged varsity emerged victorious. Returning to school the following Monday was difficult, but settling down was even more difficult for lazy students. Two weeks of vacation had dulled their ambition and ruined their study' habits. However, the semester was drawing to a close and students knuckled down to work. The Student Council sponsored a very success- ful clothing drive collecting 150 bags of clothing. These were given to needy families in the United States and foreign countries. When examinations were finally over, students celebrated by attending the semester dance, held in the gym at Central Campus. The Top Hatters furnished the music. January 23rd and 24th, fatigued students recuperated from the previous days of agony while teachers slaved, correcting papers and grading report cards. The following Saturday, Edison pool was the scene of excitement as Waukesha participated in the Cardinal Relays. Waukesha tied with Wauwatosa. No, it's the lobby of our own senior building after school, as students wait for the school buses. 11 February While students battled the elements plus their studies, workmen were busy trying to complete the new field house. The urge to take a peek at their progress, overcame many anxious WHSers as Feb- ruary wore on and completion time drew near. All were trying to visualize the magnificent structure capable of seating three thousand. February l4th, the Blackshirts welcomed a power- ful foe, Whitefish Bay, to play the first game in the new field house. March Blustering winds and muddy terrain-that was March. However, the dismal weather failed to dampen the spirits of sport enthusiasts. Students had visions of tournament games whirling around in their heads throughout class discussions, tests, and study hall periods. This spirit also seemed to infect the faculty who managed to suppress impatience until the last of the games had passed and excitement had died down. ln spite of the distracting power of basketball, WHS's talented musicians presented a very delightful and humorous operetta, Naughty Marietta. Months of preparation by the a cappella choir and the cast culminated in a beautiful performance. The musical was the first program given in the new auditorium.
