The entire council is shown during a fourth period class in room 12. Nc tialitie Stre A bemocratic Procedure TUDENT Council represents the student point of view to the faculty and administration. The Council initiates some activities such as general assembly programs, two all-school dances, a faculty tea, the care of two European Foster children, supervision of the halls and cafeteria, granting of honor WEN for service to the school, selling accident insur- ance, and the taking of underclass pictures for the Annual. This year, Council arranged the use of student ID cards, planned our first student-talent assembly, and aided in final plans for a student handbook. An effort Was made to encourage grade school councils by inviting representatives to visit WTHS. Our Council is a member of the Northeast Dis- trict, State, and National associations of Student Councils. Members attended conferences at Hinsdale and Peoria. Kay Dietmeyer served as a district officer. Kay Russell served on the student advisory board national magazine, Student Life. 29

Council Pl-vnwteA Stu ent government HE Student Council idea is a rapidly growing one. It is a part of the philosophy tlla young people will learn through activity, and that schools teach attitudes and hehavio patterns as Well as specihc skills and knowledges. Student Council is a laboratory in Whicl democratic procedures and experienced leadership are developed, and characteristics of df pendability, initiative and compromise are learned. Waukegan! Council is composed 0 fifteen hoys and girls elected by their fellow students. They meet daily, fourth period with their advisor, Miss Eleanor Moore. ln addition to this administrative group, eac- class elects a class council which represents each homeroom. :za I

NFORMATION on all school activities, including clubs, organizations, social life, and classes was gathered early in the fall as a beginning step in producing the 1952 Annual GW7. Seventeen students of various school interests were organized into a staff un- der the sponsorship of Mr. Edwin C. Meslow, editorial advisor. Instead of the usual plan of having an Editor-in-chief, special editors were chosen to plan various sections. Photography was done by members of the Camera Club with ,lohn Bauer and Steve Vap- nar working directly with the staff. Activities from the first day of school in September until the daipy school closes in ,lune are included in the Annual as a permanent record of the school year. 30 li
