MELTON Director of Summer School INCE 1923 the Board of Education has offered the citizens of this community the facilities of thc High School for evening classes in a hroad adult education program. Under the supervision of George W. Oslwun, Evening School Director, eightyflive courses are offered in academic, trade, husiness. homemaking, and hohhy fields. Fiftyfone classes with an enroll' ment of 1054 students were organized the first semester this year: the second semester 87:7 students were enrolled in 47 organized classes. Men and women of all ages are attracted hy these courses which are designed to help them make hettcr use of their leisure time, to im' prove themselves in skills that apply at home or on thc ioh, and to earn credits toward a diploma. There are no entrance requirements except that those seeking high school credit must he elementary school graduates. NTIL five years ago local students who wished to attend summer school had to go to other places where such work was offered, The summer school session at Waukegziii now takes care of such students. From 175 to 250 students from Waukegziii as well as other places in the county have heen in attendance, Wliile any high school suhject in sufhcient de' mand will he taught during: the summer ses' sion, the suhjects most frequently requested have heen in the fields of English. Social Studies, Mathematics, Science and Commerf cial. Classes are held in the forenoon during the coolest part of the day. Each class meets for ninety minutes five times a week. For sue' cessful work a full semesters credit is allowed. A small tuition is charged, making the sum' mer school selffsupporting. Prichard was soon promoted to Principal, a position which he has filled creditably for almost thirty years. Before the recent organization of the present guidance and counseling system, the school principal served as the chief source of student advice. His oflice was in effect a general clearing place for individual problems of all kinds. Mr. Prichard's conf tact with the thousands of boys and girls who have been graduated from W.T.f l'l.S. during his years of service as Principal, places him in a most favorable posif tion for envisioning the future educational needs of the VV'aukeganfNorth Chi' cago community. While the teachers and counselors guide the students in learning this staff keeps the other phases of the school in smooth operation throughout the car Wh 'nf , y . L ever there is difficulty with lockers, doors or desks, the janitor is the Hrst person k d as e to help. Keeping the classrooms and halls clean and in order is another task for the maintenance staff. Since making a good first impression is important th d - X 5 e groun s must be carefully groomed. The power lawnmower at work is not an unusual sight. Safety first is practiced during the winter when the staff clears h t e snowy sidewalks and the icy steps. Another important service group, not pictured is the cafeteria staff U d , . . . . n er the direction of Mrs. Louise Love, this group prepares and serves meals for the students and the faculty. They must prepare for four regular lunch periods. A new addition this year is the teachers' cafeteria. This is a special dining room wher th f. l ' ' 3 ' ' e e acu ty may eat. Besides serving the regular meals for students and faculty, the cafeteria staff is often called upon to prepare and serve hanquets and special dinners in the school cafeteria. 15
