The Warriors had the best season in Waukee history with a record of eight wins and one loss. This team had a winning season because of unity, togetherness, positive attitude, willingness to work, goals, and good assistant coaches. The biggest reason for our success was that each of the young men on the team had the quality of self-motivation. PATIENCE BRINGS SUCCESS TO THE WARRIORETTES This year’s Warriorettes showed much patience in their style of play, and many of their opponents knew that if they allowed Waukee to get a lead it would be difficult to win. This year’s team placed second in the Conference, won the Sectional Consolation, and finished third in District Competition. They had the third best free-throw percentage team in the state and ended with a 55 per cent field goal percentage. Several of the highlights of the 1976-77 season included two losses to Adel, the number two-rated team in the state, by three points (9-6) and seven points (34-27); wins over Des Moines Tech and West Des Moines Valley. In the Valley win, the Waukee girls made 20 of 26 field goal attempts. 68 WARRIORETTES HAVE WINNING SEASON SEASON—18 WINS, 7 LOSSES WAUKEE OPPONENT 62 1-35 49 72 Bondurant-Farrar 65 50 Maxwell 67 78 Madrid 47 79 Norwalk 48 85 Van Meter 34 85 Woodward-Granger 70 63 Dallas Community 41 50 Urbandale 65 69 Norwalk 80 6 Adel 9 70 1-35 60 61 Bondurant-Farrar 55 WAUKEE OPPONENT 65 Madrid 29 64 Norwalk 49 67 Woodward-Granger 55 97 Dexfield 47 67 Dallas Community 44 27 Adel 34 93 Des Moines Tech 60 40 Urbandale 59 64 West Des Moines Valley 56 73 Bayard 39 32 Urbandale 44 64 Perry 60 ♦Urbandale Girl’s Invitational Tournament ♦•Sectional Tournament ♦♦♦District Tournament RowTT D. The fifth year of wrestling at WCS has been an exciting one for all those involved. The squad finished with a six win four loss record in the well-balanced Raccoon River Conference. Two individuals, Mike Pagel and Marty Niblo, won conference titles. These were the first two conference champions in wrestling history at Waukee. Three seniors will be missing front next years lineup: Mike Pagel, two time state qualifier at heavy weight; Ralph Bone, hard working 132 pounder;and Paul Swanson, super-strong 167 pounder. These men have been a strong influence on the wrestling program here at Waukee High. A talented group of juniors will carry the responsibility for another good season: Guy Gilreath, 185; Dan McKinney, 119;Marty Niblo, 126;David Thomas, 145; Bill VanCleave, 145; and Bart Weller, 155. Seven sophomores will give strength to the varsity next year: Tom Brophy, 98;Clint Creveling, 126; Alan Erdman, 119;Doug Hammen, 105;Don Hill, 132;Steve Kopecky, 132; and Marc Weller, 119. The freshman class provided eight wrestlers this season: Chuck Davenport, 126; David Glade, 126; Dan Hammen, 112; Doug Jamison, 105; Dan Miner, 112; K. C. Morris, 138; Dean Olson, heavy weight; and Jeff Ross, 132. Strong leadership from next years senior squad, which includes state qualifier Marty Niblo, and encouragement from our wrestling parents and fans should provide another outstanding season.
