One of the reasons why it was so successful, besides the won and loss record, was that no one expected the girls to have such a successful season. The girls gained revenge on every team they played and lost to, except Guthrie Center, whom they only rl'-'ed once. The final diamond, that finished the crowning of a successxul season, was the now famous 71-70 victory over Dear Old West Des Moines, in the District Tourney at Adel. In our Homecoming game at Waukee, the girls gained their revenge victory over Granger, 79-67, after losing to them twice before, once in the County Tourney in a one point thriller, lost in the last seconds, 43-44, and in an early season game, 57-be. The next upset victory was over the Adel Tigerettes who must have been looking ahead to another game for they were not up for this game, but the Warriorettes were. They took the lead at the iegin:ing and built up a five point lend in the first 4 minutes and by half time lead 28-18. The local girls kept this lead during the second half and won 58-lf8, thus becoming Sectional Champions. The starting six played the whole game with the guards, Nancy Leonard, Shirley Leonard, and Charlotte Potter, doing an exceptional job of guarding. The forwards kept their scoring evenly divided with Nizzi getting 23, David 19, and Jackson 15 with almost all of the latter's scoring coming in the last quarter, including 6 free throws. The Register and Tribune listed this victory as one of four major upsets in sectional play. The game of games and the one Waukee fans will long remember will be the 71-70 upset victory over supposedly state bound Valley with a veteran team tack and lead by all-staters Luther and Barnett. Valley had in its weekly paper quite an article about the coming meeting in the District between Ankeny and Valley, and just mentioned the fact that they must disrose of troublesome little Waukee first. The same paper after the game had the headlines Doggone Those Little Neighbors AnywayI It went on to say Things are mighty gloomy around here (meaning Valley) this week. Over 3000 fans saw this game played in the new gym at Adel. Many adjectives have been used describing the girls play, some are: scrap-y , The Giant Killers , The Terrific Twosome to Donna David (Con’t on p e 36) 60 Sa ketball BACK ROW-Vince Meyer, Gale Martin, Bob Steffen, Jack Hanlon, Ron Dorrell, Dale Martin, Rex Smith, Manager. Up to the County Tournament the boys had only a 8 win, 6 loss record, but in the County Tournament the toys really got to clicking and played their best ball of the season. The semi-final game which the boys won from Assumption - l, was a real thriller, with the score see-sav ing back and forth throughout the game. Ronnie Dorrell, with a free throw to tie the score and a drive-in bucket in the last 5 seconds to win, was the hero of the game. In the finals against Adel the boys really proved they were champs when they came roaring back in the last 2 minutes to win the Dallas County Championship, 53-b9. Wit! the score tied 9- 9 and with less than a minute to go Hanlon was fouled and made both his free throws, then with only 5 seconds left Gale Martin was fouled and made both his free throws to give Waukee its'winning margin 53- 9 and with it the coveted County Championship title. It was a team victory indeed, with the starting five of Hanlon, Dorrell, Steffen, G. Martin, and D. Martin going all the way. After h years of waiting the three seniors. Hanlon, Dorrell, and Steffen, finally had their dreams come true, they were county champs. In a high scoring tattle, Waukee avenged the two earlier defeats to the tune of 79-o7. The boys' game was quite a let-down after the intense interest shown in the iris' game. They won 6l-Lf3. Jim Zabel in ris sports broadcast on WHO after the game started his broadcast with words to this effect, There is a new version to an old poem, there is little joy in West Des Moines tonight for the Valley Girls were put out by Waukee in the District Tourney at Adel. Jack North said in his column, you would have thought Waukee had won the state high school girls basketball championship when the husser sounded ending its game with Valley .......... the Waukee fans swarmed across the court and the excitement and bedlam lasted for more than 10 minutes. The players and Coach Meyer were in the mddst of one of the greatest ovations ever given a Waukee team. Scoring by quarters Waukee 16 21 11 Valley 1 + 23 15 Frances Nizzi scored 36 points in all and just couldn't miss in the last few minutes of the fourth quarter, scoring the last six points of the ball game after it had teen tied 65-65 at this point Shirley Leonard fouled out, but with Nizzi sinking b straight free throws and a field goal, Waukee pulled out ahead 71-65 before Valley started to close and they came to v ithin one point as the gun sounded. Donna David sank 5 field goals from way out during the early part of the fourth quarter to bring Waukee up to the tie and then came the grand finish. Waukee lost to a rugged Guthrie Center team in the semi-finals, which possessed one of the toughest defenses in the state, by the score of 37-51. Ankeny only scored 37 points the next night so the girls didn't feel so badly in losing. The girls closed their season with an uphill victory over Gmnd Junction in another high scoring ball game. Waukee trailed most of the ball game and only took the lead in the last minute only to have Grand Junction tie it up 6l-6l with only seconds left. Frances Nizzi sank a field goal just as the buzzer sounded to allow Waukee to win 63-61. Thus was closed the basketball season for the Waukee Giant Killers, Frances Nizzi got 37 points for Waukee. One of the highlights of the season was the scoring spree that Donna David had when she scored b8,b0, and 0 points in each of three consecutive ball games. Another of the seasons highlights was the scrappy guard play of the three regular guards, especially in the tourney games. Although the subs got to play infrequently, wnen they did they gave a good account of themselves and saved several games for the Warriorettes. WAUKEE OFFICE — of — BRENTON STATE BANK Waukee ......
