We have attempted to create a permanent record which will recall to memory the many pleasures we have enjoyed in these fleeting years of fellowship. If this book is referred to and en- joyed in the years to come, we feel that our efforts will have been truly worthwhile. In a greater sense we hope that future classes shall be able to refer to this book as a record of one of their pleasant years in school. 2 Foreword . . . Dedication . . Administration Departments . DEDICATIO icate our Grail to Mr.f Saunders, who has patiently served many years with our high school as adviser of the Grail. In his years' at our high school Mr. Saunders, with patience, interest and understanding, has won the respect of the students. For this guidance and advice we would like to say, Thank you. 4- We the Senior Class of 1960 gratefully ded- Administration Dear Seniors, Generally speaking, there are two kinds of indi- viduals who achieve some degree of success in life. One is that rare person whose genius permits him to create what no one else has the mental faculties to conceive. Far more common, however, is that average man who is possessed of the more ordinary qualities developed to an extraordinary degree through sincere effort. Be assured that diligence and dedicated application to the task at hand are never denied the rewards of satisfaction and success. Sincerely, fag,-K4 R. E. Turley Supervising Principal BOARD OF EDUCATION We sometimes fail to give the credit that is rightly deserved by our school board. Without them our school would have little chance for existence. These are the chosen men who handle all the problems concerning the well being of our school. 6 Asked how he rose to great heights, the great I. B. Priestly said, As for anyone else, I can't say, I only know I cared like blazes. Mr. Bonney Principal s X1 W we-s s .wwe GUID ANC E Choosing a vocation is one of the most important decisions a person has to make. This is one of the many problems brought before Mr. Brannon by the students. He helps them plan their courses in accord- ance with their future plans, and at time offers personal advice. R mb 3 Gf' U s 6 5 l - L To the girls at least, the commercial department is probably the most popular, because those students who plan to seek job opportunities after graduation find the best opportunities in the business field. Our commercial department is one of the largest and best equipped in the school. The three adjoining rooms furnish the students with typewriters, dictaphones, the Gestetner, ditto machine, and adding machine which they would ordinarily find in an office. By using common sense, scientists have set down laws and principles by which we explore our universe. Working out solutions gives the scientist a sense of accomplishment. Because of the advance of Russia in space travel, there is a growing demand for scien- tists and mathematicians. Opportunities in this field are unlimited. Our government, factories, industries, and engineers need men and women trained for scientific work. Although most of the scientific courses are elective in the senior high, students are urged to take them. WORKING HARD? 13 The advisors for the English department are as follows: Mr. Hewitt Mr. Walsh Mr. Charles Mr. McDermott Miss Ring English is definitely considered among the more important courses, for it is a major re- quirement every year. English is mainly the study of grammar and literature. Our study of literature includes everything from poetry to Shakespeare 's plays of Julius Caesar, Hamlet, and MacBeth. We couldn 't begin to name the many uses of English grammar. Without it we could have little conversation and certainly no writing. There would be no history and little future without our language. Gym class is one of the more enjoyable re- quirements. Physical education cultivates good sportsmanship and provides all around practical exercise for the students. Equipment such as the trampoline, the horse, and bars develop good eo-ordination and control. Basketball, volleyball, and socker-ball are played to add variety. The gym show is one of the highlights of the school year. LIBRARY The advisor for the library is: Mrs. Church Nolschool is complete without a library. The library is sometimes called the memory of the human race for it holds all the secrets of the ages. If you 're in doubt, Mrs. Church is always willing to help out. fseniors especially appreciate her help when writing their term papers.j n The Library Club helps students to learn more about their library, and at the same time be of service in the library. The music Dept., a very important part of the school, makes school life colorful and adds to the excitement of all activities. Within the music department are two im- portant organizations, the band and chorus. Both are becoming larger and more im- portant each year. This fall, our band, led by the twirlers, was seen marching on the football field. They also performed during basketball games and for a number of assemblies, as did the chorus. The spring concert is the most gala event of the season, in which the chorus partici- pates. Making a happy home is the wish of every girl. Here the girls learn to cook, sew, practice etiquette, child care, the fundamentals of good diet, food value and preparation. All of these are important in making a happy home. With the expert guidance of Mrs. Boleratz, the girls become efficient and wise economists. EHUMEMAK WVR EPS AMERICA QUR JQANN JoAnn Williams, a sweet senior, brought fame and fortune to Wattsburg when her delicious cherry pies were not only voted best in our school, county, and state, but of all fifty states. As National Champion, JoAnn toured with Mrs. Boleratz, our fine Home Economics advisor, to New York City where JoAnn appeared on the Dave Garroway Show and then to Washington where JoAnn presented President Eisenhower and Mrs. Eisenhower with one of her pies. On returning to Erie, met at the airport by the cheering Senior class and with victory music from the band, JoAnn cried with joy. We are all very proud of OUR JOANN. Learning to drive may not be considered the most important course by the school office, but to an impatient sophomore waiting for his six- teenth birthday, it's very important. One must learn to respect the rrhts of others and to be- come a careful and courteous driver. Not only learning how to drive, but how not to drive carelessly is important. And that's the battery. Boy, is he growing! How are you set for aches and pains? If this seems to be your problem, Mrs. Bisbee is the one to see. As our school nurse, she has her hands full of everything from sprained ankles to a severe headache. when you have a test to take. She is efficient and well liked by all the students.
