Text from Pages 1 - 108 of the 1959 volume:

X Foreword As we enrolled in the first grade, our main goal was to complete rwleve years of school and graduate. It was quite some time before anyone thought beyond the day of gradua- tion. In those twelve years, we had learned more about the world than we ever imagined was possible. This knowledge was given to us with the wonderful help and guidance of our teachers. Now we are prepared to venture on our own. We have been trained to go out, find employment, and make our own living. We would like ro take this opportunity to thank the many teachers and our parents who have guided us through these twelve years so successfully. As we publish this yearbook, The Grail, we extend our sincerest thanks to the advertisers and patrons who have made the publication of this annual feasible. Their con- tinued interesthas made possible perpetuation of our memo- rable school days. Special thanks also to our yearbook advisors who have helped us so much in preparing the yearbook. This book shall always remain a pleasant reminder of our many happy days at W.H.S. The Wattsburg Area High School P.T.A. has as its president a very interesting personality, Mr. Robert Rosen berg. In our interview he discussed with us the objects and aims of P.T.A. organization, and the programs he hoped would be presented during his year as president. The objects are: fly To promote the welfare of children and youth at home, school, church, and community. 121 To raise the standards of home living. C39 To secure adequate laws for the care and protection of children and youth. My To bring into closer relationship the home and the school, that teachers and parents may co-operate in training of the child. Q51 To develop between educators and the general public such united efforts as will secure for every child the highest advantages in physical, mental, social, and spiritual education. At the first meeting in October an engaging and attractive program concerning Music Instruction in our Wattsburg Area Schools, elementary and secondary, was introduced. lnteresting numbers were presented by Mr. Ralph Perkins and Miss Jean Wildermuth, our music instructors. Among the presentations was a demonstration class of pupils, who are members of the chorus, showing how music and choral work is taught in our schools. The November meeting was a panel discussion on Guidance Counselling. Mr. John Brannon, guidance coun- sellor, acted as moderator. The panel consisted of four patents of high school students and four students--a dis- cussion followed. The program for the January meeting will stress the procedures followed in the procurement of teachers for the Wattsburg Area schools. Mr. Ralph Turley, supervising principal and Mr. Milton Bonney, high school princi- pal will be the speakers. This will be followed by a question and answer period. The March meeting will have as its program the story of our new area school and the proposed building program for our area. Those participating will be Mr. Robert Harwood, Mr. Milton Bonney, Mr. Ralph Turley, Mr. Robert Rosenberg and Mr. Herbert Miller. A question and answer period will follow. The last meeting of the year will be held in May. Students come in to tell Mrs. Bisbee about all their aches and pains. During the year Mrs. Bisbee gives health examinations, checks eais, weight and height of everyone in the school, plus checking on all who are ill, as well as frequently assisting pupils to their homes. Mrs. Bisbee has to divide her time between the elementary school and the high school, which keeps her very busy, indeed. Without her W.A.H.S. would be a very unattended place. Is it 3 cold? Dig that wavy hair! . . .sayingz That reminds me of ajoke . . . a whiz in trig. xg is l Class Histor Four years ago a group of noisy, excited students began their high school careers at the Wattsburg High School. We shall begin at the bottom ofa ladder representing our school days from our freshman year to the present. Since our future is merely a dream, we must pause at the rung in the ladder which will lead us into the future. 1955! lt's time to look alive! Yes, we all gazed around the room which was to be our homeroom in a most anxious and expectant manner. We were all very interested in discovering if all our old friends were present, and very happy to know that most of them were there. Likewise. we detected very few new faces trying to ad- just themselves to our anxiety of seeing each other again. Mr. Haney, was to be our class advisor for the year. Finally, after becoming reacquainted, the class was called to order and proceeded with the election of officers After seemingly hours of voting and nominations. James Stuntz became our beaming President, his fellow of- ficers were lean Oblinski, Vice Pres., Pat Coatoam, Sec'y, and Io Duda, Treas. During the year we debated over class activities, and ended the year by having a skating party. a hayride, and several candy sales. Our profits for the year were fairly small, but our friendships were great. There were only forty students in our freshman class, but our friendships were to increaseconsiderably in thenext few years. 1956 and a new school building brought us new classmates, giving our grade an enrollment of seventy, and three homerooms. As we walked into the school on September 13, a cold day in September, for the first time, the heating sys- tem was not in operation, and we sat shivering in groups. Though sitting for hours widl our jackets on was quite uncomfortable, one could find no better way of making friends! We had ample opportunity to meet our new friends during the regular class periods and class meetings. We waited until we were at least partially acquainted with each other before we elected our class officers. During that time we became good friends with our homeroom teachers who were Mrs. Post, Mrs. Hosier, and Mr. Tonelli. When we finally decided that our grade needed officers in order to conduct class business, we chose Larry May, President, Gil Salisbury, Vice-Pres., Chuck Karotka, Sec'y, and Neal Conn, Treas. We were not too concerned in building up our class treasury, since we were too busy getting acquainted. However, with a dance or two, candy sales, andahayride, we made a little money to add to our class funds started at the old school. We were all happy about the money, but much happier. at the end of the year, over the many, many new friendships which had helped us to enjoy our Sophomore year so much. 1957! The third rung in our ladder, our Junior year, brought us new experiences and much work, yet it was a fortunate one for us, because our treasury showed a respectable balance, which enabled us to accomplish many things. Mrs. Comstock and Mrs. Kosnosky were to be our advisors for this important year. We chose our class officers early that year, Buzz Yost, Pres., Eve Walter, Vice Pres.: Carol Liebau, Sec'y, and Neal Conn, flater replaced by Lynda Boartsj Treas. At the beginning of the second semester. we were, indeed, a very happy group. for our class rings had ar- rived. How proudly we displayed them, parading and strutting about the room with ostentation and flourish. With the arrival of our rings, our impatience concerning them sudsided, and we were now ready to settle down to more serious business. There were two great events for which it was necessary for us to plan. One was the Junior Prom, planned by the Junior Class to honor members of the graduating Senior Class. The other was our class play. Our Junior Class play, Finders Creepers was a marked success, Due to the expert direction of Mr. Narducci, the cast turned in a creditable performance. The play was well received and enjoyed by the capacity audiences. The cast included Chuck Karotka, Buzz Yost, Dean Shick, Merle Truesdail, Dave Heseltine, Bob Massing, Neal Conn, Bill Perry, Loretta Hom, Pat Coatoam, Ruth Delaforce, Mimi Sinn, Connie Bucklin, Jo Duda, and Audrey Brown. Our most beautiful and captivating activity of the year, of course, was our Prom, for which the theme 30 Rhapsody in Stardust was chosen. The decorations harmonized perfectly with the theme. Our gym was dec- orated in pink, blue. and white hues, with a background of stars, and lilacs for our flowers. A wishing well oc- cupied the center of the room, making our rhapsody complete. fBut you should have seen that gymnasium the following morning!! That was when we wondered how so many hours of careful planning and work could be de- stroyed in a few short minutes. But it WAS fun! We were proud that Dave Baker won a nation-wide scholarship during our Junior year, Dave Heseltine com- peted for and was awarded a scholarship in English, Jim Stuntz also received honorable mention for a scholar- ship. 1958! We have finally reached the last rung in our ladder. We are now Seniors in Wattsburg High, and proud of it! We realized our last and senior year at school would be an extremely busy one. We, therefore, spent a great deal of time in serious thought and planning to achieve our aims. The election of an efficient corps of officers was the first business on our agenda. The following were elected to serve as officers during our senior year: Dennis Chesley. president, Jim Stuntz, vice-president, Betty Northrup. secretary, Marcia Jant. treasurer. Our class was also honored to have two of its members serve as officers of the Student Council, Dave Baker as presi- dent and Jo Duda as treasurer. Our greatest activity this year. will. naturally. be the graduation exercises. However. we are eagerly look- ing forward to a delightful prom, which the junior class is sponsoring in our honor, and, of course, the Senior Banquet. We have already sponsored two dances. and presented our successful Senior Class Play, Calm Yourself, directed by Mr. Narducci. The cast included Dean Shick, Charles Karotka, Tom Lohse, Merle Truesdail, Jim Ross, Loretta Hom. Lynda Boarts, Pat Coatoam, Ruth Delaforce. and Connie Bucklin. We began planning for graduation by having our Senior pictures taken and ordering our name cards, gradua- tion announcements. etc. Our greatest task of the year. however, is the publication of our yearbook, a difficult yet enjoyable task for all people working on it. During our high school days. our class has been fortunate in possessing a great deal of talent, academic, dramatic, and athletic. It is, therefore, with pride that we point to such as Jo Duda. queen of the FFA Festival, Lynda Boarts, Pat Coatoam. Loretta Horn. Ruth Delaforce, and Barb Kieklak as the vivacious cheerleaders at our games, and--Tom Burton, Dick Belding, Chuck Karotka, Russell Gomiak. members of the Varsity Basketball Team--to whom these cheers are directed. Our future is in the offing, however. we all have our dreams of achieving our aims in our lifetime. Some of the dreams are fantastic, and others very realistic, while some have gone beyond the dreams stage. Some will be serving Uncle Sam in the Armed Forces, others shall enroll at colleges, some will work in offices, while yet others will be married, and some may even be failures. Yet, whatever our fate, whatever our lot in life may be. we will remember that our training and preparation for the future began at Wattsburg High School. There will always be a feeling of tendemess and pride for our Alma Mater. As we look forward in eager anticipation to receiving our diplomas and a happy future, we will leave you with but one thought: We thank you all. Advisors, friends, For the helping hands That you did lend To us, the senior class. 31 I QQ 4, V xx 'x .,s, e 1' f ire? zif . A yellow cab quickly responded to my loud requests and boarding the cab we directed the surly driver, none other than Jim Gregor, to drive us to the Bus Station. Automatically despositing a few coins in the meter. we were milling our way through heavy city traffic. Reaching into my overcoat pocket for the latest edition of the daily paper. the headline shocked me. CHARLIE KAROTKA, TV WESTERN STAR TO APPEAR HERE. The column below it was stupendous. lmagine Camille Kownacki. Carol Chase, Carol Liebau. Sandra Bessetti, Barbara Kieklak, Betty Northrup and Betty Thaler as secretarial assistants to Charlie Karotka! My reading was intermpted by a sudden jolt that rocked the cab. Jim had attempted to run a red light, but when he saw two policemen standing at the curb. he thought it better to wait. l recognized both officers as Russ Gor- niak and Dick Belding! As we waited for the light to change, Gordy burst out laughing. I laughed too, for there was Larry May and his wife Loretta having a healthy squabble over a hat in a fancy store window. At last we reached the Bus Station, and thanking Jim, we rushed toward the main entrance. We had just reached it, when Gordy nudged me and l glanced around to see Connie Bucklin, a press card in her hat, interviewing Dean Schick, now a successful Movie Producer. The ticket clerk. from whom we purchased our tickets for our fishmgftrip to Canada was Jane Zimmer. The voice of the crier. we recognized as that of Dennis Chesley. psffwe waited for our bus to arrive, Gordy glanced down the corridor and spied a group of four young men in animated co : , tion. Noticing our approach, Janice declared a brief intermission, and we exchanged surprised and friendly greetings. We found out that Janice was now a Lady Sales Executive for Amalgamated Plastics of New York, and Jo Duda was her personal bookkeeper. Janice related to us all the positions our friends held. Elaine was now a waitress at the Cleveland Hotel, enjoying a short vacation. Choyce Ann, Audrey and Joyce were all Home Economics teachers and Janet Cotten was a housewife who was on her way to Albany to meet her husband em- ployed as an out-of-town construction worker. Dale Chapman informed us that Curt and he were in the farm machinery business together and that Ray Tanner and Tom Schultz were their able assistants. Denny Spehar was a successful French teacher on his way to Buffalo to buy a wedding ring for Joanie. A longer visit with our friends was prevented by the arrival of their bus which they boarded. Two big words on the front read, Albany-Buffalo. and away they went. Gordy glanced up the street and we could see that our bus was also loading, and we hurried, lest we be left. We had spent more time than we realized and had even missed our breakfast. Well, I wasn't hungry anyway. but Gordy sobfully stated that he was. I reminded him to dream about those luscious fish we would land in Canada. One thing we could depend on, however. The fish would never be any bigger than the tales we would probably tell on the way back. 35 . Senior Q ' H ' . N .5 WRESTLING Wrestling, added to the sports calendar two years ago, has been successfully promoted in Wattsburg under the astute coachin of Mr. B Haney. Despite the lack of experience and a dearth of wrestlers this year's team has made a very good showing. TUMBLING TEAM Tumbling as we call it is for the acrobats of our day. This sport develops arm. leg, and shoulder muscles and accurate muscular control. The sport demands expert co-ordination and team work since a late or a faulty grasp may mean many in- juries.
