EX LIBRIS 3 1 6 Q i NOLLVDIGHCI -we-vvvlvi--v 1--f'w- 1742235 ,W-rz-nmfw ' - ,W , JH, is .XS 1 Dedication We, the Senior Class of 1956, dedicate this yearbook, The Grail, to Miss Constance Nowak, our class advisor. For the past three years she has thoughtfully guided our preparation for the future and helped us with our many problems. We appreciate this and thank her for it. ADMINISTRATION 35 17412 E PrincipaI's Message Seniors: The most powerful things in the world are invisible...character, love, electricity, and your power to visualize and make dreams come true. Don't underestimate your power as an individual. One citizen can be a great influence for good in the making of a better community if he will but do his part. 35 17412 E k . As you walk through the upstairs hall you can hear the keys of her typewriter and see Mr. Bonney, busy attending to the various jobs that go with being principal of the high school. 1235 4 17 1 i Guidance ffice The guidance program was a success this year because of the spirit of complete cooperation that existed among the members of administration, the faculty, and the student body. Although this is Mr. Brannon's first year in Wattsburg High School, he is well liked among the faculty and student body. This picture was taken in his guidance office as he stands near the books he lends to the students for their own personal use. 235 1741 chool Board Seated: Standing: Paul V. Many of us were strangers to each other, and Mrs. Edleman, our ad- visor, was also a stranger to us. After we got acquainted with all the other students and the faculty, we didn't have any trouble and had a fine year. SOPHOMORES: Well, back to school again and the same home room, too. we lost four students this year, and had 20 left. Most important, we acquired a new home room teacher this year, Miss Nowak, who continued with us through the rest of our high school years. JUNIORS: Here we are again back for our 'next-to-the-best' year as Juniors. We were still in room 8 and had, by far, the smallest enrollment in the school, 18. This year proved to be our most exciting one so far. We had a few expenses, the Junior-Senior Banquet and the prom, and scraped together enough money for our class rings. We presented our first class play, 'Let Me Out of Here! which was a big success. During this time we were earning money and planning for our Senior Trip to Washington, D.C. SENIORS: Finally we were seniors. That long-awaited year arrived, and we hoped we had reached our goal in High School. We were still the smallest class in school with a total of 13 Seniors. Our home room was still room 8 and was getting to be our second home. Miss Nowak helped us start the year off with a success ful bang bv directing our class play, WHobgoblin House.n Along with our play we had a dance and planned to have another one later on. Meanwhile we were all looking forward to our Washington trip, and later on, the prom. As most Seniors are we will be glad to get our diplomas, but we'll miss the fun and good times we had and hope you had with us it Wattshurg Hfgh school. 1741235 Senior Class Will We, the Senior Class of Wattsburg Area High Sch County of Erie, and State of Pennsylvania, do hereby make, publish, and declare this to be our last Will and Testament, hereby revoking all former wills and codicils by us at any time heretofore made. First, we leave to the faculty some tokens of our appreciation, which we know they will cherish for the rest of their days. To Miss Nowak we leave a quiet home room. To Mr. Bonney we leave the satisfaction that he has turned out some brilliant physicists. To Mrs. Smith we leave more study halls with future seniors. To Mr. Diffenbacher we leave regret, for he has lost some great All-American athletes. To Mr. Brannon we leave thanks for helping us choose our careers. To Mrs. Walker we leave the knowledge of math- ematics--we couldn't pick up any. To Mrs. Bisbee we leave more sickness and in- juries to take care of. To Mr. Hartshorn we leave a few Vocational Agriculture students. To Mrs. Boleratz we leave a neater Home Ee. room after ball games. To Mrs. Taormina we leave hopes of a better Shorthand II class next year. To Mr. Rouse we leave less gum to be counted under the chairs. To Mr. Lawrence we leave a better co-operating chorus. To Mr. Rouse and Mr. Rankin, the maintenance men, we leave less work. ool 235 1741 To Mrs. Lopez the girls leave one locker with- out a lock. To Mr. Haney we leave hopes for better behaved History classes in the future. To Mr. Pora we leave quiet Study Halls. To the underclassmen we leave a brand new school, no noon hour recreation, strict rules, and last of all, plenty of studying. To the Juniors we leave a promising Senior year Qnothing to dol. . To the Sophomores we leave lots of expenses as Juniors To To of hard To of hard the Freshmen we leave lots of studying. the 8th graders we leave four more years work 0 the 7th graders we leave five more years work. Lyle Brumagin leaves his brilliance to David Yost .,. 1741235 enior Class Prophecy The T. W. A. airliner was circling high above Wattsburg Municipal Airport. Just before landing the pilot was relieved by a co-pilotg and as he walked back through the plane, I was busy looking at a Life magazine which was featuring an article written by Lenore Rotthoff foreign news-correspondent for Switzerland. We had kept a long line of letters flying back and forth between the two countries, and I was very engrossed in the article. Someone tapped me on the shoulder, and looking up, I saw a tall, good-looking blond in a pilots uniform. He asked me if I remembered him. I replied no and he said his name was Glenn Loop. He sat down, and I asked him if he remembered my husband Ronald King. He said of course, and we talked about old times until the plane landed. It was quite a surprise when he told me he was still unmarried because he is a very good-looking man. He had to run as soon as the plane landed because he had to get to the bank before it closed. I asked him why he didn't catch a bite to eat with us and then we could all get a taxi and drop him off at the bank. He said that would be fine and as soon as we landed, we started looking for a place to eat. We noticed a striking restaurant on the edge of the airport. As we started into the restaurant, we noticed a sign saying 'Ronald Smith, proprietor.n Glenn and I looked at each other and practically ran into the place. We were in such a hurry that we ran into one of the hostesses. The tray she was carrying splattered all over the floor and we all got flustered. The proprietor came over, about to ask us to leave, because we were making a commotion. The proprietor was so mad that he didn't notice he was talking to a couple of old classmates. After they all began to laugh,he finally recognized them. He started talking and told us that the hostess we had run into was also an old classmate of ours, Leola Vogel. Of course, I had already recognized her and we were laughing and talking like old times. It turned out that neither Leola nor Ronnie were married, but Leola was engaged to a boy who was in the service and stationed overseas. They were planning to be married when he got back. Glenn looked at his.watch and said that he would have to go if he wanted to get to the bank before it closed. My husband and I decided we would leave and get something to eat later, so after telling Leola I would see her later and promising Ronnie we would eat at his restaurant before we returned home, we left. We called a taxi, and who should drive up but Jim May. He said that after he got home from the Army he had bought a taxi and gradually worked his way up until he now had eight taxis and a flourishing business. He had married Beverly Taylor, who was now teaching home ec at the Wattsburg High School. At least she got what she wanted. I hadn't seen her since her graduation from Indiana State Teachers College. By this time we had breezed through town and stopped in front of the bank. We said we were going on to register at the Hotel Wattsburg, so Glenn said that if we'd wait a moment he'd go along there with us and then go to Ronnie Smith's restaurant for dinner that evening. He was gone about 10 minutes, and when he came back, he had Victor Horn with him. Just imagine, Victor was president of the First National Bank of Wattsburg. I wasn't too terribly surprised by this because I had always thought that Victor was going places, and he certainly had. We talked a few minutes. but he had a conference scheduled so he had to hurry back. Glenn climbed in and we proceeded to the Hotel Wattsburg which was owned by Ida Barton's husband. He was a South American whom she had met while serving as a missionary there. They had come back to Wattsburg and now had one of the best hotels in the state. was surprised though to find out that Roger Rouse was manager of the hotel. He was happily married and spent about 15 minutes showing us pictures rf his wife and children. I was glad his life had turned out so well for him. He walked down with us and stood talking to us while we registered. As I was glancing over the register book, one name signed in big bold print stood out--- Elton Longstreet. Roger said that Elton was one of their best customers. He had made an invention of a new type of toothpick. I guess they are non-tarnishable and unbreakable. He had made enough from his sales to live a prosperous life and was now Wattsburg's most eligible bachelor. Well, stranger things have happened. I was disappointed to find that he was away on a trip to Canada. We rested from our trip until five o'clock and then decided to go to dinner. We summoned a taxi but were not fortunate enough to get Jim May again. We had ridden only about half the way when something went wrong with the motor. The taxi went about a hundred yards more and stopped completely. We were wondering whether we should summon another taxi or not when a cream-colored Cadillac pulled up behind us and the driver asked us if we wanted him to notify the next gas station. The taxi driver said, WI'd be very much obliged, Mr. Stutzman.' The name made me glance around quickly and there stood Gary Stutzman. He noticed me at the same time and came up to the window and spoke. 41235 ng- ' 1 Hu said he was superintendent of schools for Erie County and was still unmarried. He asked if we had heard that Beverly May, previously Beverly Taylor, and Ronnie Reynolds were employed in Wattsburg as teachers. I asked what Ronnie was teaching and he said he was one of the coaches. I said I was very happy that their plans had worked out so well. Gary jumped back into his Cadillac and took off saying he was going to send back a surprise. He certainly did. Who Brumagin informed owned by on being should drive up in a repair truck but Lyle It didn't take him long to fix the taxi. He me that he was head mechanic in a gas station none other than Donald Sayban. Lyla was planning married that fall but Don was happily narried already to Doris Afton, anothfr of my old classmates. They had quite a prosperous bruiness, it seemed. We thanked Lyle and told him we would be stopping by the gas station before we left to se them all. We had dinner back at Ronnie Smith's restaurant and had quite a gab session with Kathleen and Fred Hopson. It turned out that they had recently built the East Wattsburg Plaza and were hoping for big results. We left for the hotel early, only stopping long enough to acquire a newspaper. While glancing through it, I read that Miss Ella Fitch, famous opera singer, was making a tour of the New England States before leaving for Great Britain for a performance there. Well, it certainly is a big world. Seeing everyone again made me very happy. But, right now I'm tired and my plane leaves early. So, good night, everyone. I hope you enjoyed our get-together.
