There is a wide variety: teas, pool parties, dances, glee club, discussion groups, and = mixers. Through these activities the student is better able to expand her school life and take advantage of op- portunities for leader- ship, in a wide range of areas. Since 1943 she has been a tradition at Watts. From the first year that Annie moved in, she has become a symbol of congeniality and understanding between tw o chosen roommates. This year, Annie has lived with LYNNE NORFOLK and ANNEKE ALGRA. SANTA FILOMENA To be chosen for the honor, the students selected must have exhibited qualities of outstanding leadership, dedication, love of nursing, and be relatively high in scholastic standing. The members of this special society are selected each May. We feel that Anneke Algra, Dianne Hall, Lynne Norfolk, Chris Parham, Debbie Wallace, and Ev Yount well deserve this honor. 25 ENON EES WHITE CAP DANCE 1973 A great year comes to an end with our White Cap Dance. Each class anticipated the dance in individual ways and chose repre- sentative candidates. We made plans and joined our classmates in projects. With the support of our friends and co-workers in the hospital, everyone was hoping her class would win. The reaching out of one’s hand to help is all that is needed. This helps the feeble grow strong. The working skill exhibited here will never be forgotten. Through her knowledge the student learns to be alert for the unexpected and for her patients needs. In this way, she is more able to provide individualized nursing care for the surgical patient. This was where we learned what nursing really was and how disease affected the whole world. All the ward personnel were great. We worked together as a team, sharing our experiences and learning from our mis- takes. In this way, we were able to apply our knowledge and gave the best nursing care possible. However, we could not have accom- plished all that we have without the aid of our instructors. At times they were hard and expected an awful lot, but they guided us toward our goal for greater knowledge. We learned, but only be- cause we had the best to teach us. OUR SENIOR YEAR It seems like an eternity since we, the Class of 1973, first entered the Watts Hospital School of Nursing. The memories of initiation will never be forgotten, nor will the memories of our Big Sisters, who were always around with en- couragement. We soon began to settle ourselves into a way of life that would be ours for the next three years, and one which would bring us all to a common goal. We were not exactly sure how to begin our journey, but set out with enthusiasm and anticipation of events soon to come. N.C.C.U., the fire station, Fundamentals, our Charlie Brown play, being campused, and Christmas Caroling were all memories of our Freshman year. We looked forward to the first days on the ward and finally caught a glimpse of what real nursing meant. We made mistakes, but we worked hard to better our- selves and achieve success. Then we became Juniors and we were the Big Sisters now. We moved bravely to Hill House and to a greater degree of responsibility and new experiences. We now assumed a new uniform, commonly known as the “‘scrub dress”. Many long hours were spent in these. The skill of surgeons, the miracle of birth, and the joys and sorrows of Pediatrics will always be with us. At times it seemed as if we were so separated, but we found the time to reunite at dances, cookouts, and, of course, the Haufbrau. Med-Surg was long and hot, but the daily get-togethers around the pool were a welcome relief. Then the long awaited day of Black Banding arrived. We took on our black bands becoming the Seniors; soon to assume more responsibilities and chal- lenges than we had ever met before. We were proud and happy, but also sad. Soon we would lose our Big Sisters — but they would never be forgotten. Butner was an experience, instilling in us a greater understanding of others and a greater awareness of ourselves. Med-surg and Leadership brought us back together for the last few remaining months. Now, graduation is right around the corner. We're happy and proud, but also sad. Soon we'll leave and go our separate ways. But, the memories we have and the friendships we've made will never be forgotten. One thing will remain with us all: the desire to serve humanity to the best of our knowledge. After all, this is what nursing is all about. min apes onl caps.
