We have found a personality which possesses this rare mixture of qualities. That person who embodies all these attributes is precious to those of us in the senior class. We feel that she deserves this recognition for the lasting trust she has displayed in us and our school. Her teachings have become a part of us and we shall continue to be grateful. For her support, her assistance, her guiding wisdom . . . we, the class of 1969, with great appreciation, dedicate this WHITE CAP to DR. KI.EANOR EASLEY. 17 THEORY THEORY apie cea neem CORR THEORY THEORY THEORY A Sound Foundation Achieved Through Fundamentals A beginning for some enough for others a time of infinite importance Freshmen begin their nursing skills through funda- mental studies and practice of procedures. Under supervision they learn the basic techniques and the whys''; together, these are carried to the clinical area for more effective use. This is the framework on which they will build for the next three years. 21 Obstetrics Each of us was made by God and some of us grew tall. Others stood out in the wind, their branches bent and fell... 22 23 Those of us who walk in light must help the ones in darkness up. For that's what life is all about andsloveris all therevis to life. Each of us was made by God dus is min inH beautiful eye. 24 Those of us that turned out sound should look across our shoulders once and help the weak ones to their feet. It only takes an out- stretched hand--Rod McKuen. 25 Pediatrics Pediatrics encompasses all that is young, trusting, and full of hope. In its halls among an array of battered toys and soiled diapers lie countless joys and occasional heartbreaks which we in time may leave but which never leave us. It reveals memories from the past, hopes for the present and glimpses of a future which will some day be our own. Our motto we leave to those who follow us: May all your troubles, too, be little ones. . a 4 howd 1 : Blessings on thee, little man, Barefoot boy, with cheek of tan! With thy turned-up pantaloons, and thy merry whistled tunes--John Greenleaf Whittier. Sweet babe, in thy face soft desires I can trace, secret joys and secret smiles, little pretty infant wiles--William Blake. The Mystery Of Surgery Becomes Real During her experience in the operating room, the student gains a working knowledge of nursing functions related to the total care of the patient re- quiring surgical intervention. Students are oriented to aseptic techniques, special terminology, surgical procedures, and teamwork. An opportunity is pro- vided to develop an awareness to the unexpected needs of the surgical patient. Through each of these, the student increases her ability to provide effective continuity of nursing care. 30 31 A taste of every sort of knowledge is necessary to form the mind, and is the only way to give the understanding its due improvement to the full extent of its capacity. --Locke 32 33 The time which we have at our disposal every day is elastic; the passions that we feel expand it, those that we inspire contract it, and habit fills up what remains. Marcel Proust 34 Or EVERY DAY IS A FRESH BEGINNING THE UNPEACEFUL EVENING OF THE 36 NIGHTS’ BLACK MANTLE COVERS ALL ALIKE Psychiatry Compassion is in inextricably linked to acceptance of self and of others. It is the ultimate expression of emotional maturity. It is through compassion that a person ex- periences the highest peak and the deepest reach for self understanding. 39 ACTIVITIES ACTIVITIES ACTIVITIES ACTIVITIES The students rule 42 43 THES TUDENTS RULES = We rule both in mind and in spirit. In March, we met with members of neighboring schools of North Carolina at the state convention. Here we renewed old acquaintances and made new ones. Student nurses moving upward 45 Each year student nurses from the state meet in com- petition to choose one who displays the qualities of the ideal student nurse. The young lady chosen reigns as Miss Student Nurse of the Year. We feel that Mary Carole Blanc represented our school well in this event. Together with their leader, these girls diligently practice in order to ensure magnificent performances. One such performance occurs in the spring when our girls join with the UNC Gleemen to present a Spring Concert. 48 Santa Claus In red ... and helpers dressed in blue and white 49 Years captured in hours 50 To capture each phase of our lives at Watts was our intention. Work was bountiful. Worry was plentiful. Hours were long; but satisfaction abundant. By guidance from the co-editors, Diane Gibson and Billie Jean Moore, we, the annual staff, worked diligently to present this yearbook to you. Also, our special gratitude to Sandy Pruitt for her conscientiousness as Business Manager and Mr. Allengood for the many hours he devoted to this annual both as our photographer and advisor. 51 WHITE CAP DANCE 52 May 17 brought to a close months of badgering, ''borrowing, and beggin from the students. Each class worked hard to earn the right to crown their candidate queen, but tradition again repeated itself as the senior candidate, MARTHA CURRIN escorted by DR. PHILIP PEARCE, was crowned MISS WHITE CAP 1969 by DR. GOR- DON CARVER. Her attendants were ELLA HAWKINS, Junior class candidate escorted by DR. THOMAS STOKES, and JACKIE HARRIS, Freshman class candidate escorted by DR. MICHAEL BERKET: One te cap— whi d ine illum gold I solemnly pledge myself before God and in the pre- sence of this assembly; to pass my life in purity and to practice my profession faithfully. I will abstain from whatever is deleterious and mischievous and will not take or knowingly administer any harmful drug. I will do all in my power to elevate the stan- dards of my profession, and will hold in confidence all personal matters committed to my keeping and all family affairs coming to my knowledge in the practice of my profession. With loyalty will I endeavor to aid the physician in his work and devote myself to the welfare of those committed to my care: A band colored black Did you know you were brave, did you know you were strong? Did you know that you helped when I erred? Did you know I grew stronger and better because I had merely touched shoulders with your Arthor Unknown We, the Senior Class of 1968-1969, present to you, Mrs. Greta Brooks, the Lois Cox Award. August comes, and departure nears. We, elated, but sad- dened, seniors prepare for our big day when we will don our uniforms of white. But, this day also necessitates that we re- linquish our black bands forever. Tradition deems it necessary that our bands be received by our followers, our little sisters''. Confidence and a sense of gratification are displayed as we place these narrow bands of black, illumined gold, onto their caps. 56 Formed at Duke in 1943, but adopted here at Watts was a Senior honor society known as Santa Filomena. To be chosen for this special honor, the student selected must have exhibi- ted qualities of outstanding leadership, dedication and love of nursing, and be relatively high in scholastic standing. The members of this special society are selected each August in a formal tapping ceremony. We feel that Brenda Blackburn, Mary Carole Blanc, Billie Godwin, Susan Bennett, Hilda Holloway and Linda Clark well deserved this honor. Santa Filomena's symbol of a miniature gold lamp is being worn well. 57 Annie, who appears to be a chipped and bat- tered figurine of plaster, possesses a meaning far beyond the picture she presents. She has been a tradition at Watts since 1943; it was in this year that a senior student won Annie at the State Fair. This senior having had no roommate of her own, chose to share Annie by passing her on after her graduation to the two closest room- mates. Since the first year that Annie moved to Watts, she has become a symbol of conge- niality and understanding between two chosen roommates. This year, Annie has lived with Billie Jean Moore and Anita Moody. PEOPLE PEOPLE PEOPLE PEOPLE PEOPLE ADMINISTRATION DIRECTOR OF NURSING SERVICE... Margaret Boswell SECRETARY. . .
