Last Will and Testator Nancy Nelms Prophecy 2:00 a.m. Here I am sleepy as usual, all of the patients are quiet on Ward M now so I decided to polish my shoes which every- says stay dirty. 2:05 a.m. I hear a loud crash on Ward J, Anita Petrea has just dropped a bedpan which is rolling down the hall. 2:15 a.m. I decide that iflamto stay awake I must have something to occupy my mind, so I turn on my portable radio—Flash— Ann Allen and Eleanor Dodson have started giving twist lessons on the side. Call 13-1300. Now the music begins. Those voices sound so familiar—why, it's Judy Collins Wolff and Mary Hiser Bowling singing, North to Alaska. 2:30 a.m. I dial Ward G to see if Susie Sharp is sleeping on duty. To my surprise she is awake, and has just had five admissions. Our new Supervisor, Mary Elaine Staunton, is standing on her head because there aren't but three empty beds. Since Susie was so busy, Wyni Everett left Ward L for a while to help her out. 3:00 a.m. The roar of an ambulance is heard, Nancy Nelms and Diane Jones Barbour who have been called are over-joyed to hear they are finally getting to do a case by themselves. Dr. Kay couldn't make it. Virginia Young decides that they are going to need help, so she runs from emergency to catch up with them—too late—they are just suturing up. 3:15 a.m. I hear a rumble over me, I must go up and find out what's happening. Barbara Reynolds Spangler, who is working in the Nursery got so excited when Judy Germino Smith came in for delivery that she knocked the bottle warmer over and broke all of the bottles. They decided the mess could wait. First they would have to get Ann Bland from Ward O and have a party. The Delivery Room is the perfect place for a party but Martha Sue Johnson is flaked out in there so the A dmitting Room will have to do. 3:30 a.m. Carol Eaves and Betty Bradley just floated by, mumbling something about two new interns. They aren't on duty, they just had to tell me all about it. 4:00 a.m. Time to take temps.—they can wait for a while. I'll call Peggy Rouse on Ward F and see how she and Julia Voorhis Lancaster are making out with all ofthose men. Sounds like they are having a blast, all of the patients are still up—oh well, they can sleep all day. 4:15 a.m. An ambulance is heard in the distance. Sue Snell Woodley and Judy Williams rush to the door and panic when they see that it is actually three ambulances. It is Joyce Orphal, Sally Lupton and Alice Collier playing a joke on them. Boy! What a job reviving Sue and Judy. 4:45 a.m. Joan Newell Long and Sarah Davis Issac are walking around in a daze, as if nothing is happening. They have only been married for a short while, so they sill have stars in their eyes. 5:00 a.m. Norma Watson, one of our clinical instructors, just came up to assist one of her students with a prep. It seems that the student must have overslept—well she just flunked the course. 5:30 a.m. Some people never bother to reset their clocks—Terry Taylor Harkey is here an hour early again today—I really don't think she can see the clock when she first gets up. 5:45 a.m. I called Ward H to see if Peggy Allen wanted a ride home. It had been so quiet that she had enough time to make several visual aids for our former Nutrition instructor. They were all about Calcium and how it makes you grow into big strong boys and girls. 6:00 a.m. Linda Vise Averette and Linda Southern Lynch are two of our new head-nurses. They always like to come “a little’ early to get their wards straight before their students arrive. They seem to feel that the students can be rather ‘critical at times. 6:30 a.m. Guess [had better getbusy and get my work done. I always look forward to eating breakfast with Pat Rudisill Knowles, our new Pediatric Instructor, and Marion Cobb, our freshman advisor. They are really doing a grand job—now if they can only get some students to teach. 7:30 a.m. I'm finally off, one more night's work well done—-Oh, there's Gloria Hobbie and Pat Grissom Steed stumbling off the bus. They are working in one of the local doctor's offices—nothing like a soft job. I sure wish I had one. The dorm that we live in; a plot of earth, a street. The outside games when spring comes; the picnics shared by all. The rush we make to breakfast; then seven o'clock report to meet. ; The fun we've had together; the times we've laughed and cried. The places that I study; the classmates by my side. The things I see about me; the big things and the small. Wa tts !! Selling to newcomers on the porch; or selling from room to room. Under the streetlight— parting, when midnight comes too soon. The rush to get the. showers, phones ringing in your ears. The people all around me, I'll remember through the years. The week-end strives for beauty; the permanent waves for free. And a promise for tomorrow; that's what Watts means to me. Washetball Capping In a solemn and breathtaking ceremony, the first year Watts students, having completed nine months of introductory nursing courses, receive their caps and go forth into the world of serving the sick. Wba ck Banding After two years of hard work and study comes the proud mo- ment of black banding, and your official seniority is acknowledged. You are now climbing that last mountain which must be scaled _ and conquered before that long- awaited, and much deserved graduation with removal of your black band, and you, in pure white, march forth to your call- ing. od i nnie In 1943, a senior student at Watts won a plaster figurehead at the State Fair. Having no room- mate, she passed it on when she graduated to the most deserving and closest roommates. Annie, now battered and patched, has become a tradition at Watts to be loved and cherished as a sym- bol of friendship to all roommates receiving her. This year Annie was presented to ... Patsy Deal and Sarah Lynne Davis. Gheistaree Caroling During the Christmas season, student nurses participate annu- ally in an impressive Christmas Caroling Service. The student carolers with their lighted candles are led through the Hospital by Mrs. Bessie Burgess and a stu- dent, portraying Florence Night- ingale. Afterwards the carolers unite in a circle on the Hospital Grounds where the Lord's Prayer is sung. TDs Hill Each student spends three months of her education at Dorothea Dix Hospital in Raleigh, North Carolina, thereby acquiring experience in Psychi- atric Nursing McBryde Building is the main building ofthe hospital and the one in which we obtained most of our clinical experience. ption™ In the All Faiths Chapel, we, both nurses and patients, share the serenity of mutual worship. The garden adjacent to the chapel adds toit's loveliness. Here a student may spend many hours pensively renewing the joys of solitude. Indeed, this would not have been possible without the cooperation of the entire annual staff; our photographer, Mr. Churchill of Smith Studios in Raleigh, who patiently stood by us as we made these memorable photos; and Hunter Publishing Company who published our book. JUDY COLLINS Co-Editor MARTHA SUE JOHNSON Co-Editor We cannot close without mentioning those hectic nights—with the scramble of paper and pictures—which lasted into the wee hours of the morning. Without these memorable occasions we're sure the WHITE CAP could not be what it is or mean as much to us. Girls, in this THE 1962 WHITE CAP you have our hearts and exhausted minds. Martha Sue and Judy t55 Dhorince ightingale ANNE ALLEN Anne has served us as class president this year, leading us when we needed to be led, pushing us when we needed to be pushed. She has faithfully forged ahead in the true Nightingale tradition. We the senior class say thanks for all this and for portraying Miss Nightingale at the annual Christmas Caroling and the Capping Ceremony. lt. ts (Ee Sy Pe QO RP ee ee ier This award was made possible by Mrs. Edith Brocker, Associate Dean, Duke University School of Nursing, in fond memory of her housemate, Miss Lois Cox; and in appreciation for what Watts Hospital did for Miss Cox during her illness. The award is presented through the Senior Class to the Faculty member they feel has contributed most to their professional and personal growth. We the class of 1962 present this award to MRS. ETHEL RIGGSBEE. Even though throughout our three years she has ap- proached us with flu, typhoid, polio and diptheria injections, we shall never forget all the times she smiled and took our tem- peratures when she knew it was a severe case of student nursitis, stood by us when we were really sick, baked cakes for our raffles, attended class meetings and patiently listened to our lengthy discussions, assisted in planning Blackbanding, remembered us at Christmas and most of all supported our class when we were most in need of support.
