Text from Pages 1 - 104 of the 1961 volume:

The people, the attitude, the discipline, the learning, the essence of nursing has given our school its own personality--reflecting responsibility as we care for those who are sick. We are grateful for we feel our years here have been a challenge and that our lives have been enriched. We sincerely hope that as you revolve around this world of ours, you will share the atmosphere of our hospital, work, dormitory living, and social activities. BETTY McGHEE JANE PRICE Editors You have expressed sincere concern for the health and personal satisfaction of others and have become an inspiration to each of us. Your willingness to render service combined with a wholesome humor and a warm smile create a dynamic personality that wins the heart of everyone. The sweetest lines are those to duty wed, Whose deeds, both great and small, Are close-knit strands of an unbroken thread, Where love ennobles all. The world may sound no trumpet, ring no bells; The book of life the shining record tells. Attributed to: Elizabeth Barrett Browning THE NURSES' SYMBOL LAMP Though we do seek in kind earmmestness to understand The hidden truth, little do we know of human pain, Of suffering, anxiety, or death. Yet inevitably We must face the challenge of the sick multitude; Our efforts ever toward obedience, our minds Prepared to administer. Loneliness may destroy The sparkle from aged brows; neglect may cheat Rebounding youth. Timely expressions of love and Wisdom extend a guiding hand. Many are those who Seek a relief, a restoration of spirits weak— A bath, a smile, a tablet with love; oh, indeed Must be our symbol lamp, a burning light. Jane Price MRS. Selective students are recognized for their initiative, leadership ability, high scholastic stand- ard, and outstanding nursing care. The Santa Filomena flower is the white lily. Members are identified by the miniature gold Florence Nightingale Lamp they wear. ELLEN MOORE BOBBIE SNYDER CAROLYN WILSON We, the graduating class of 1961, entered Watts three years ago as pre- clinicals to begin furthur preparation for our future. During our first nine months, we studied hard but also had fun. Our class officers were Betty Baines, au - president, Mary Lou Smoak, vice president, Ellen Moore, secretary, Sandra eann ; ; Hursey, treasurer, and Anne Carter, historian. Faculty sponsors our freshman oe MAT year were Mrs. Flora Stanley and Mrs. Peggy Heinsohn. One of our classmates, Alta Taylor received the Lee Parker Scholarship, and Betty McGhee attended the National Student Nurse Convention in Philadelphia. As a climax to our first nine months, the traditional Capping ceremony was held at the Trinity Methodist Church on May 31, 1959. During our fresh- man summer we continued our studies and occasionally took 'side trips to the YMCA to soak in the sun. Summer activities included ice cream parties, hobo picnics, and tennis. We also played softball on the vacant lot behind the Wyche House. There were glee club concerts with the N.C. State and UNC college choirs, as well as morning worship services at nearby churches. In each of the freshman dorms vespers were given in the evening. With the advent of becoming Juniors in September, we began to more readily accept the increasing responsibility which faced us, and our free time suddenly vanished when we rotated to operating and delivery room call. After six months of medical-surgical nursing on a clinical basis, we began special services, '' pediatrics, operating and obstetrical areas, and psychiatry. In March, the first twelve of our classmates, packed up for the Hill. Eventually each of us shared these experiences at the Dorothea Dix Hospital in Raleigh. Those three months helped us to mature and gain deeper insight into the basic concepts of nursing. Junior class officers were Norkie Edgerton, president; Jane Price, vice president; Carolyn Ingold, secretary; Ruth Stokely, treasurer; and Alta Taylor, historian. Our major project for the year was the production of the Christmas candles. In the spring, Diane Steed attended the National Student Nurse Convention in Miami Beach. The class worked earnestly to raise money for the coming yearbook. September of 1960 brought greater responsibilities into our lives. Only a few days prior to the Black Banding ceremony, Santa Filomena tapping was held. As the rising senior class, we accepted our new role with anticipation and began our last year with enthusiasm! Miss Betty Lusk, faculty member, was elected with Mrs. Stanley to sponsor the class. We had many bake sales, and raffled a ham and turkey for projects. In March, the annual ''White Cap dance was held at the Elks Club. The senior class was represented by Miss Carolyn Ingold; our Junior representative was Miss Billie Gray Thomas, and our Freshman representative was Miss Anne Carter. The spring also brought to life glee club activities as well as basketball games. Bobbie Snyder, student body president, attended the National Convention in Cleveland. With the summer months rapidly approaching, we bid a farewell to Jane Price as she traveled to Africa to be a summer student missionary nurse, through the sponsorship of the Baptist State Convention. June was the month of the bride-to-be tea, as well as the final fitting of the graduation uniforms. There were graduation shoes to be ordered, invitations to be mailed, and many other last minute loose ends to be anchored. With graduation only around the corner, we studied in our moments of quiet and planned for the approaching State Board examinations in the fall. At last, these three years are behind us; this may sound as a sigh of relief, but all is not joy. There is a touch of sadness as we, the class of 1961, step out into a rapidly expanding profession and leave behind our faculty and memories which have indeed enriched our lives forever.
