Who 'sponsored' our class—years one, two, and three, Giving of her time, unselfish and free. Her patience is long, Her friendship strong With understanding, great, And guidance never late. Her radiant, warm smile Offers encouragement worthwhile. She's more than a teacher, Yet not a preacher, This one whom above All others we love! It is for her genuine interest in her students, her helping handinneed, her in- spirational guidance and counsel, and for her untiring patience in that Nursing Arts Lab and those frustrating first months on the wards that we offer our sincerest thanks and most grateful appreciation as we dedicate the 1960 WHITE CAP to MRS, RUBY BAILEY PIERCE. RUBY BAILEY PIERCE In Memoriam DOCTOR WILLIAM MAURICE COPPRIDGE To honor a great doctor and friend, we the class of nineteen hundred and sixty leave our yearbook in memory of Dr.William Maurice Coppridge,Chief of Urology. July: 24,, 1893 - August 28, 1959. The sweetest lines are those to duty wed, Whose deeds, both great and small, Are close-knit strands of an unbroken thread, Where love ennobles all. (1) The first week we were kept busy running from tours of the town to picnics, (2) to parties, to movies. This was going to be nothing but fun and excitement (we thought). With this spirit we headed to classes on the first Monday morning...soon to find ourselves in possession of a stack of books taller than we ever wanted to see again. As we began the slow trudge through them, surprised to find the body contained 206 bones, (3) we realized that as in everything else, you will get from nurses' school exactly what you put into it. All of this coming in and studying at 7:00 P.M. each week night with the housemother sneaking around behind us and mysterious persons tossing trashcans down the back stairsseemedtous a far cry from the noble profession each of us had chosen. But the day our uniforms were distributed to us in varying sizes and lengths, we knew we were a step closer. (4) As we began to attack ''Mary Chase and each other with backrubs, bedbaths, and enemas, we knew we were on the right road. Our Preclinical officers included: President, Edith Bell; Vice President, Lydia Spain; Secretary, Beverly Shearon; Treasurer, Lib Carroll; Sponsors, Mrs. Pierce and Mrs.Keene; and we were led into car-washing, leaf-raking,and floor- waxing, planning ahead for our senior year annual, Few of us shall forget the birthday parties, (5S and 6) held each month, the Christmas (7) and White Cap dances, the spring picnic, and the tennis court dance. Nor shall we forget the tears shed the day we were homesick or had a conference on the ''green carpet, '' only to find ourselves cheering someone else the very next day. Soon all of this was to be behind us; the short hours of the first days on the wards, the intensive Closed study, and ahead was ''Capping where the much- longed-for Watts caps were placed on our heads and bibs were snapped into place. With the impressiveness of this ceremony and the pledge of Florence Nightingale, we took the step from ' prelimie to student nurse, realizing new responsibilities and taking on new purposes. (8) The following days we went our separate ways to the wards, (9) and returned to the dorms weary but satisfied having completed our first and most strenuous 8 - hour day. Many of our class began the long stretch of ''special services'' which brought us face to face with strapping babies, scrubbing, fatal heart rates, and catatonic stupors, (10) This year passed quickly as we became juniors and were led by our President, Nell O'Connell; Vice President, Carole Newton; Secretary, Emily Sessoms; Treas- urer, Faye Hoyle; Sponsors, Mrs. Pierce and Mrs. Keene. Our projects included hose, fountain pens, and candy sales. (11) With these endeavors, the choosing and wearing of our class pins, and the social calendar planned by our ownstudents, the well-known junior slump!'' was short lived. As our second summer slipped away,we became the top with (12) 'Black-banding.'' As we placed these ribbons on the rims of our caps, we were the senior class and the leaders of the school. With this added responsibility our main intent was to give this last stretch extra enthusiasm as we completed the special services, elected Faye Hoyle to Miss White Cap, and began and finished our annual. Of course, there were times for fishing trips, (13) playing in the snow, (14) sunbathing at the ''Y,'' (15) tossing the Frizbee, and watching Twilight Zone on Channel 5. The officers during our senior year were: President, Faye Hoyle; Vice Presi- dent, Sidney Sims; Secretary, Harriette Woods; Treasurer, Lydia Spain; Sponsors, Mrs. Pierce and Mrs. Roberson; and Nell O'Connell served as president of the student body. Beverly Shearon and Janie Bailey held offices on the district student nurses' council. Now time is drawing near when these three years will be but a memory to us as we each choose our field...be it education, general duty, or home-making. It will be hard to say goodby to this life fifty-one of us have shared as we recall the face of our favorite doctor...our favorite patient...our favorite ward. (16) In these memories we find that this is merely the end of the beginning. OPIN JANE WIGGINS leavee sag ceo CAROL HILL leaves to go see if all the World tSF e Drea Mess as this place. BOBBIE. Joy to the world! Christ is born! Peace to you this Christmas morn. Each Christmas, Florence Nightingale leads the student nurses of Watts through the darkened hospital, as they sing traditional carols in a message of hope to those who cannot be at home. The nurses who must be on duty also feel lifted and their homesickness eased somewhat as they see the patients' smiles, and sometimes, tears that erase for a while the mask of pain and loneliness, replacing it with a look of serene happiness. The Lois Cox Award is presented to the faculty member who has contributed most to the professional and personal growth of the members of the graduating class during their three years in the Watts Hospital School of Nursing. Mrs. Edith Brocker, Associate Dean, Duke University School of Nursing, has made this award possible by donating a sum of money in fond memory of Miss Cox who was her house mate and in appreciation for what Watts Hospital did for | Miss Cox during her illness. Miss Cox devoted her life to her work, the nursing profession, but she also found time for her friends, her church, her beloved yard and garden and for civic work and organizations. She was recognized as a leader, and committees on which she worked were productive. Fd Those who were privileged to know and work with Miss Cox look back on her many accomplishments with amazement. ¢ She never made a complaint; her whole attitude toward her illness was one to be greatly admired—her life one to be emulated. | This year the Senior Class has chosen Miss Barbara Lintz Oyler to receive the Lois Cox Award. Although she is now employed elsewhere, we shall never forget her because of her enthusiasm and willingness in everything she undertook, as well as for her teaching in. Obstetrics and Pediatrics. i She led and inspired us beyond our textbooks into tomorrow; and proved to be a true friend to all who knew her. 1960 BARBARA LINTZ OYLER ‘ ‘ — SHOPPERS’ GUIDE LAVERGNE OF CHAPEL HILl To MR, LAVERGNE JOHNSON, our photographer, the staff of THE 1960 WHITE CAP offers sincere thanks and appreciation for patience and helpful suggestions, and for a job well done. 82 Best Wishes To The Class of 1960 BROAD STREET REXALL DRUG COMPANY 83 Durham, North Carolina .
