He taught us' the importance of skillful, competent nursing care through patience and understanding. We know him by his walk late in the night as he keeps vigil over those entrusted to his care. With deep _ gratitude and admiration, we, the class of 1958, dedicate our yearbook, THE WHITE CAP, to our neurosurgeon, DR. WALTER S. LOCKHART. FUTURE 1. Homeward bound! ! 2. My BIRTHDAY? 3. FRANCES BANE, leave to Lois Robinson my common sense, imagination, and— see you later, heah- Class History September 6, 1955 marked the beginning date of our nursing career when fifty-six young and eager girls entered the Watts Hospital School of Nursing. Fun and excitement filled the first three days which included making friends, unpacking, parties, and trying to find our way around our new homes, Staff House, and Wyche House, better known as Witch House. Nursing life was really going to be fun. Our thoughts suddenly changed the day we came from the classroom loaded down with books. Each night at seven o'clock came a familiar cry, In your room girls. Desperately, we tried to determine if the toe bone were connected to the foot bone. Oscar really provided us a perfect set of bones to study and view. Suddenly, we felt we were really beginning to learn how to become a nurse. Nextcame nursing procedures and Miss Chase was the perfect patient. Never a complaint did she make about our nursing care. This was a trying period; but we were particularly guided by Miss Jaeger, Miss Perry, and Mrs. Pierce. Our class leaders ‘for the. first year wére: President - Jean Adams, Vice-President - Vann Mangum, Secretary - Martha Reynolds, Treasurer - Diane Ralph, We tried hard to strike it rich! Never will we forget that HOBO DAY, and all the work that we did. Our class sponsors.were Misses Perry and Jaeger, who led us successfully through those nine trying months. Remember all the tears, beach trip, thé packing and unpacking. At the end of nine months of hard study, we were anxious to don those bibs and yearned to wear a white cap. On June 10, 1956, at Trinity Methodist Church,.we received our caps in a beautiful impressive ceremony. As we pledged the Nightingale Pledge, we realized more than ever the great responsibility before us. At last we felt that we were a part of the hospital personnel. T a Suddenly weal! were divided going to different wards and into special services. Eight hours a day overwhelmed us with new problems and more-responsibilities. Our days in the operating room included many new terms-and experiences including call, masks, and sterile technique. Summer quickly passed and we became jolly juniors. An honor known as Junior Slump was bestowed upon us. Our obstetrics rotations began with a familiar push, push. Those full moons really kept the stork working full time. Our Junior class officers were: President - Diane Ralph, Vice-President - Nancy Murphy, Secretary - Dolly Strayhorn, Treasurer - Patricia Derreberry. Our sponsor was Miss Perry, One of the most important events in our Junior year was the selection of a class pin. How we cherished and proudly wore them. Distingished Juniors were we! Again summer passed swiftly away, classes ended and vacations were welcomed. The fall was eagerly awaited—it marked the beginning of our Senior year. It was truly THE DAY when we received our black bands to add to our white caps. This halo marked the highest step. At last we were sophisticated SENIORS! Some of us began classes and studies; while others went to the Hill to begin a new experience in nursing. Those twelve weeks spent at the Hill were the greatest! Never will we forget those memories. Our class officers were: President - Diane Ralph, Vice-President - Mary Madren, Secretary - Betty Williams, Treasurer - Vann Mangum. Class sponsors were Mrs. Graves and Mrs. Workman. We lost Mrs. Workman in the spring of our senior year, and we elected Miss Oyler to be our sponsor. Things really kept us stepping this pass year. Selling ads, subscriptions, selecting superlatives, taking pictures, and compiling all the material to make our annual kept us busy. Time is fleeting away when student days will be a memory of the past. It seems so hard to say goodbye but memories will long linger in our hearts. At last we have accomplished our goal. We now face a future filled with excitement. The end is just the beginning! May we give to the world the best we have—. Poem In the quietness of the night Darkness is shadowed. .by one Lone light—as the Nurse Her charges all in bed. .turns To duties that fall upon her head. Her watch ticks on; the evening barely falls. The linen's out..the charts are drawn. Then suddenly a patient wakes and calls And instantly her weariness is gone. Swiftly and steadfast she guides her light To fall upon the bed... Of her patient and his plight! As night wears on she works serene With patience, hope and gentle care. She is the mechanism... The very pulse of the machine. She stands—a statue aglow in white Crowned by a muslin cap—her symbol Of professional light. She's on her feet, each movement sure And fast—until another's need Is cared for and quickly past. Dawn comes.. wearily her duty hours fall. She is a nurse, chosen and dedicated to all. LINDA WALKER Class Flower White Rose Class Colors Navy Blue and White Motto Give to the world the best you have, And the best will come back to you. School Song We came to Watts from far and near, And br ought to her our needless fear, And she with patience took our youth, She set us in the way of truth. This our vow as on we go, Zoe moe sas agapo. What if she gave us arduous work! There is no task we dare to shirk, To ease the suffering, lighten pain, To comfort others, not for gain. Hence this song that all may know. Zoe moe sas agapo. Stern teacher, kindly too. We will often think of you. Bringing memories of the past Such as shall forever last. Will we e'er forget thee? No! Zoe moe sas agapo. By my soul | love thee.
