This was the bright, sunny, day on which fifty seven young girls, hope- ful and eager, entered the Watts Hospital School of Nursing, The first few days were packed with fun and excitement, Getting acquainted with new friends, parties, and finding our way among our new home were truly experiences to remember, But then you know... All play and no work makes prospective nurses ignorant people... so the work began! It was work, but yet, as we look back on it, enjoyable work, ''Miss Chase , I suppose, worked hardest of all trying to hold herself together for all the procedures we practiced on her, Hubert , too, was very patient as we labored over him trying to find out if the ''shoulder bone and arm bone ' were actually connected, Our firstday onthe wards was one of those days that you don't forget, I'll bet those patients were never before, and will never again, be so clean as they were after those baths we gave them, Finally Christmas was here, and the Shep quarter of classes ended with two glorious weeks at home for Christmas vacation, Those two weeks dwindled down quickly, and before we knew it, books were slowly being opened to study for ''tthat Anatomy quiz tomorrow , We pulled through ''that Anatomy quiz'' and many others like it to reach the day of all days mepcuretraining history, On MAY 30, 1954, we received our caps at a beautiful ceremony at Trinity Methodist Church, On May 31, our pink gloud burst and we soon realized, as we became a real part of the hospital team, that we were, just beginning to learn and were not so smart after all, Some of.us went ta the wards to work and others of us began our tour of duty in the O.R. where on call” and ''sponge count” became very familiar phrases, The summer ‘passed quickly” ‘and before we knew it, a class was graduating, a new class coming jn, and we,were® “promoted to the honor rank of what is known as the 'Junior Slump'', This sounds” iriorbid, and s then, it was! We thought that never before had we had it so bad ’ ig! with twelve noon Dermatology classes, Our Junior year brought us O.B. rotation whi we enjoyed very much --- except when the stork decided to be a night owl and we were on eit Will we ever forget, ''push, push, push!''? The brightest spot of this, our longest year, was the selection of (fight over) our class pin, and the day they finally arrived we were ''Belles of the Hospital’', Night duty, O.R ;°D.R., and all, we enaLy tpulled threugh and when summer and vacation time came, we began to see the Tere: ER La It seemed as if that summer would never end, but soon it was time for another graduation, and though we couldn't believe it --- time also foe us to proudly ada a black band to our plain white cap. That we did, and with great pride! Some of us began to apply ourselves to studying once more, and others were off to ''The Hill, Those twelve weeks spent at the hill were really the GREATEST, (and I spell that in capitals)! We learned a whole new vocabulary there... You ??!!?? ...'Is it spelled right, Browning''? When we got back and started Pediatric rotation we sometimes wished we could use that vocabulary when all those kids started yelling at one time. This year was not without losses, though, and one of our greatest - Miss Osterman, How can we ever repay her for making us what we are. We shall be forever indebted to her, The things that really kept us stepping this year was the Annual, Selling ads and sub- scriptions, selecting superlatives, taking pictures, and compiling all this material to make the book you are now reading was quite a job. Don't let us forget Accreditation, That's what really made us put our best foot forward, and the results were well worth the effort. Now it's over. The fleeting years have passed, leaving wonderful and very dear memories not soon forgotten. Before we leave we want to thank all of you who have helped us to fulfill our class motto, WHAT WE ARE TO BE, WE ARE NOW BECOMING Wyvette Brown, Historian For Him Who Wore a Crown of Thorns He wore a crown of thorns that I Might wear a crown of light, And so in deep humility I'll wear this cap of white. I'll walk in quiet confidence, Befitting one who knows The path He trod once long ago, The way a Christian goes. And as I minister to those Who need His healing touch, I'll serve them in the name of Him, Who gave for me - so much. And somehow may His light shine forth Through me from day to day, That those entrusted to my care Will find the living Way. For Him who wore a crown of thorns I'll wear this cap of white, That when He calls I'll worthy be To wear a crown of light. School Song We came to Watts from far and near, And brought to her our needless fear, And she with patience took our youth, She set us in the way of truth. This our vow as on we go, Zoe moe sas apago. What if she gave us arduous work! There is no task we dare to shirk, To ease the suffering, lighten pain. To comfort others, not for gain. Hence this song that all may know, Zoe moe sas agapo, Stern teacher, kindly too. We will often think of you. Bringing memories of the past Such as shall forever last. Will we e'er forget thee? No!
