We hope you will like it. Even though the form may be different the content of the book is still a summary of our three wonderful years at Watts. It is full of our friends, hopes, ideals, our love for nursing, and above all the memories, both happy and sad, that we have collected. With tears in our eyes and hope in our hearts we say “So Long” but not “Good By” to the place that has sheltered us for three years, to our incomparable friends, and to all those who have helped to guide us toward the nearing day of graduation. Only 10 years ago we were graduating tonight. Now here we are together again at our class reunion. Hasn‘t the living room changed with all the new deco rations? Hardly looks like the same Hill House. There are Mrs. Beattie and Mrs. Patton—Mrs. Beattie is hustling around as usual telling about the “rules.” Five of our 41 were unable to be here today. Only last night Jean Kay and “Red” became the proud parents of a third red-headed son—just think 91 2 pounds! Jean Butler finally got her doctor, they are traveling in Europe this Fall. She is still on the go. On the other side of the world, Nancye and Frances are stationed in Honolulu. Helen Mohler was able to use that Disaster Nursing after all. She is the first woman civil defense director of the United States. There’s Margaret, Tina, Shirley, Lois, Anna, and Ada standing near the punch bowl showing pictures of their children. My, they look happy. Joyce Lewis, Betsy Kennedy, and Delores all flew in from Texas with their pilots. It looks as if Betsy won’t be nursing long. Joyce is still working and poor Larry still can’t get a word in edgewise. Ann, still unsettled, is modeling nurses’ uniforms, originals by Thelma Cook. Their creations have excellent taste. Betsy Magill is over by the piano autographing copies of her new book “My View of Einstein’s Theory of Relativity.” Wonder if she would sing for us? Here co mes Peggy Berry in the door now; hasn't changed a bit. She is Director of Nursing at Person County Hospital. Doris and Rosella came over from Raleigh. Rosella is educational director and Doris is supervisor at State Hospital. They always did like psychiatric nursing. We have a celebrity in our midst, | see. Gayle was recently elected President of the A.N.A. You would think after obtaining her M.S. in nursing education Joan would be more refined, but instead here she comes leaping over chairs, black fur coat, G.I. haircut, and all, telling jokes. | wonder how Jo Ann and Alice found time to be here. They are instructors at a Miami school of anesthesia. Nice tan they have. Janie is head of the Frontier Nursing Service in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Look at that cute hat “Granny” has on. She is scrub nurse for one of our former interns—they are a great chest surgery team. Estelle is organizing new chapters of the K.K.K. in nursing schools over the country. Guess Giles couldn’t find a baby sitter since she has all 6 of them with her. By the way she has a new yellow Cadillac station wagon. Betty Nichols, specializing in orthopedic nursing, has just patented a new arm sling. | wonder What's so funny between her and Jeanette. Incidentally, Jeanette is married to a famous criminal lawyer. Peggy Webster and her undertaker husband have built a new funeral home near Lake Mickie. Greta and Sylvia have fulfilled their ambition to travel. Greta is a stewardess for Pan American and Sylvia flies for TWA. Jewel, Willie, and Emily stayed at Watts. Remember Mrs. Mallard? Jewel has taken her place now, and Willie is an admitting officer. Emily is assistant O.R. supervisor. Lois Liner and Joyce McLamb are doing graduate work at U.N.C. in public health. Jane took a post-graduate course in O.R. technique and is now teaching at Cone Memorial in Greensboro. Sara, another celebrity, is the new editor of the A.J.N. Rosie, I’m glad you came to be with us, it has been nice talking with you. Oops—the time has flown. Everyone is beginning to leave, and I’ve got to get home and fix the baby’s formula. ERMA HILL CCAGLE), Testator THE LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT State: NORTH CAROLINA City: DURHAM County: DURHAM Hospital: WATTS ARTICLE |: We, the tired graduating class of 1955, of the aforesaid state, county and city and hospital, being as we are, though happy, do hereby proclaim this, regardless of what it sounds like, to be our last will and testament. ARTICLE Il: To the instructors, supervisors, and administrators of the Watts Hospital we leave our appreciation for your understanding and kindness in the past three years. To the staff doctors and interns, we leave, remembering the little things you have done to make our stay a happy one. To the house mothers we leave, hoping the rising Seniors will be a little quieter and keep cleaner rooms for you than we have. ARTICLE III: To the Freshman Class, we leave hoping you will enjoy your three-year stay here as much as we have, regardless of the off-duty, accident letters, classes, and more classes, frequent change of plans, and disappointments. You had better leave while you can still walk. ARTICLE IV: To the Junior Class, we leave our places as weary, worn-out Seniors, and the few of us who have anything else to leave, have listed them below. |, Anne Adams, do hereby leave my engagement rings and frat pins to Gail Gentry, hoping she'll make better use of them than | did. Tina Bailey, Joyce Lewis, Betsy Kennedy, and Shirley Craig leave their ability to work two- thirty to eleven every day and still go steady for three years to anyone who is willing to try it. Jean Deyvault and “Dee” Hicks leave their love of red hair to any Junior who may obtain a red-headed boy friend. Margaret Blalock, Frances Young, and Nancye Matthews leave their parties, the PATIO, and Hogan's Lake to the entire Junior Class. |, Lois Bobbitt, leave my admiration for grey-headed doctors with mustaches to anyone who will be good to him. |, Sairy Gamp, oops, | mean Sara Boone leave my 6’s on housekeeping to RED-HEADED SCOLI. We, Thelma Cook, Joyce McLamb, and “Granny” Simmons leave our good times at Dix Hill to “Bo” Capps, Billie Clapp, and Patricia Monk. |, Gayle Pickette, leave my love of the “Green Carpet” to Gwen Bennett hoping she will not wear holes in it. |, Jean Butler, would leave my baby blue Cadillac but | like it. |, “Willie” Pleasant, leave my hospital bed to Peggy Carden, hoping she won’t have much time to make up. Betty Nichols, Jeanette Hall, and Betty Giles leave their “noisy personalities” to anyone who is willing to suffer the consequences. Estelle Ray leaves her 25c cigars to anyone who can afford them. |, Janie Featherstone, leave still talking—Think I'll go to Canton. |, Greta Powell, leave my wonderfully wiggly snake dance to Edgy. We, Rosella Hefner, Doris Latta, leave our ability to get along as roommates to Billie Roberson and Nancy Tilgman. |, Jo Ann Frazier, leave my choice off-duty to Nancy Gambill. |, Ada Evans, being of sound mind?—leave to go with Freddie! |, Emily Durham, leave my quiet ways to Beverly Best, hoping she will use them. |, Helen Mohler, leave my love for the O .R. to Joy Stuart. |, Anna Nunalee, leave heading for Germany! |, Jewel Williamson, leave my name to anyone loving “hillbilly” music as | do. Peggy Webster leaves Lake Mickie to Pat Carpenter. |, Sylvia Winstead, leave my love for men to Betsy Long. Oh, also my love for baubles, bangles, and beads. |, Erma Hill, leave my mail bag to Judy Rumley hoping it will be as abundantly filled as mine has been. 1, Rosa Belle Stevens, leave—early. |, Betsy Magill, leave my vacant seat in front of the TV. |, Peggy Berry, leave my hyperthyroidism to Peggy Tew. I, Joan Reinhardt, have already left something to Margie Moore with the hope that she will love it and remember, through the hard times, what it meant to me.
