Rig Sel Ophea IT WAS BACK in the year 1943 when Rommel was flying across the sands of Africa with Tommies hot in pursuit, and the big Wellingtons and Fortresses were warming up on the Scottish Highlands for their dusk to dawn assaults. But in the “States” the radio blared incessantly interrupting themselves occasionally to announce that a new corps had been formed in Washington to be named, “The United States Nurses Cadet Corps.” The voice pleadingly asked all girls out of high school to enlist in order to release nurses for the army and navy. Down in the Southland they heard it too and traditionally answered the ‘call to arms.”” From the coal mines of West Virginia to the hills of Hickory, from the sands of Southern Pines to the shores of Okracoke they came. Thus was born the first Cadet Corps class of Watts Hospital, the class of ’46. We have come a long way since that first September when as scared, green recruits we assembled on the Staff House steps. We have known hard work, we have had to study and like G. I.’s we have faced for the first time, the knowledge that duty comes before pleasure. But what of the friendships made, the fun and frolic enjoyed, and the pride gained from wearing our caps and bands. No matter how far we may roam, we shall always love our school and honor our profession. We will remember with gratitude the people who taught us skill and gave us of their knowledge. As the class of ’46, we go forth knowing that in war time we were not idle and that in time of peace our service has just begun.
