She STAT, 1946 WRITTEN BY STUDENT BODY WATTS HOSPITAL DURHAM, N. C. Editor: ELIZABETH EUBANKS Business Manager: RUTH HAVENS a DESEO SOOO EOE OOD OLED EOI ODD DLO DOPOD POPOL OODL OPPO VOD TORE ol Berea [ T IS THE sole purpose of the 1946 “STAT” to help you recall those days of yesteryear when cadets, caps, black bands, graduation—the in- between of night duty, operating room, obstet- rics and isolation constituted our existence. We have named our year book, “STAT,” mean- ing immediately or “on the double” for it is indeed the password to the nursing world. QLLLOOLOLOLOODQOOOOODOOOOQOOPOOOOOD DOP OOOO ODOGOPDOOOG DO OOOOOHOOOOY COOOO GOO OOOO OOOOOOQOOOOOOOQOO OO DOOO OHO OOOO ODO QOD OO OOOO OOOOQO OOD Rig Sel Ophea IT WAS BACK in the year 1943 when Rommel was flying across the sands of Africa with Tommies hot in pursuit, and the big Wellingtons and Fortresses were warming up on the Scottish Highlands for their dusk to dawn assaults. But in the “States” the radio blared incessantly interrupting themselves occasionally to announce that a new corps had been formed in Washington to be named, “The United States Nurses Cadet Corps.” The voice pleadingly asked all girls out of high school to enlist in order to release nurses for the army and navy. Down in the Southland they heard it too and traditionally answered the ‘call to arms.”” From the coal mines of West Virginia to the hills of Hickory, from the sands of Southern Pines to the shores of Okracoke they came. Thus was born the first Cadet Corps class of Watts Hospital, the class of ’46. We have come a long way since that first September when as scared, green recruits we assembled on the Staff House steps. We have known hard work, we have had to study and like G. I.’s we have faced for the first time, the knowledge that duty comes before pleasure. But what of the friendships made, the fun and frolic enjoyed, and the pride gained from wearing our caps and bands. No matter how far we may roam, we shall always love our school and honor our profession. We will remember with gratitude the people who taught us skill and gave us of their knowledge. As the class of ’46, we go forth knowing that in war time we were not idle and that in time of peace our service has just begun. DONATIONS WE, THE SENIOR CLASS OF 46, wish to express our sincerest thanks to all those who so generously helped make our dreams of a year book a reality. Without the support of these loyal friends, our book would not have been possible. ROBBINS FASHION CENTER Mrs. Woop MRs. KIEFER The World may view her as a glamour girl, This charming nurse, arrayed in spotless white. And yet, her inner beauty, like the pearl, Lies humbly hidden, far from human sight. There is no glamour in the broken lives, That lean upon the nurse for strength and aid; No glamour in the surgeon’s bloody knives, Which halt disease in bodies God has made. Each mortal ill to which mankind is heir Is hers to witness and to bring relief. The dying find sweet solace in her prayer, While broken hearts find comfort in their grief. Upon the battlefields in distant lands Her smile brings sunshine to our fighting men. She binds their gaping wounds with skillful hands, And guides them on their way to health again. There is no glamour there amid the fray, No rest from warfare’s cruel and bloody sights. Without reward she wends her weary way Along the ghastly scenes of endless nights. The crash of bombs, the rain of screaming shells, Do not strike terror in her brave young heart. Amid the horrors of a thousand hells She nobly stands . . . God’s angel set apart! Dear nurse! No service cross may grace your breast, About your neck no medals may be hung. To you no public praise will be addressed, No epic of your actions will be sung. In room and ward, upon the battlefield, You labor on, unmindful of the cost. Who can recount the bodies you have healed? Or name the souls you helped from being lost? The world may soon forget. But One above Will always know each tiny hidden deed That you perform, through charity and love, For His poor children in their hour of need. So work and pray until earth’s day is done. A life of love and mercy never dies! The seeds cf kindness, planted one by one, Will bloom eternally in paradise. Beyond the silent tomb and mournful sod The souls you served will some day realize That you, who walk the streets of heaven with God, Once walked the wards ... an angel in disguise! UL. Due to influenza and other complications we, the nurses, have not been able to follow the calendar as we anticipated but hope to in the future. We are indebted to cur Superintendent of Nurses, Mrs. Bessie Lee Perry Burgess, and ° Superintendent of Watts Hospital, Mr. Sample B. MARCH, 1946—CAPPING EXERCISE After six months of being preclinicals, a memorable day comes to a “prelim’”—the day of getting her bib and cap. Receiving a white rose of purity, and lighting her candle from “The Senior Florence Nightingale’s” candle is included in the ceremony with seven cap students repeating the virtues of a nurse. The great event is concluded with the poem “My Cap” and The Florence Nightingale Pledge. Let us be done with fault-finding, and leave off self-seeking. May we put away all pretense and meet each other face to face—without self-pity and without prejudice. May we never be hasty in judgment and always generous. Let us take time for all things: Make us to grow calm, serene, gentle. Teach us to put into action our better impulses, straightforward and unafraid. Grant that we may realize it is the little things that create differences; that in the big things of life we are as one. And may we strive to touch and to know the great, common human heart of us all, and, O Lord God, let us forget not to be kind. To express in word or rhyme. Of people, power and personality. Typical of this class so fine. To a class who heeded its nation’s call In a world of turmoil and fear. We willingly dedicated each heart and soul For country, for Watts, for a noble career. The trials were many the classes long. During the first five months’ probation. Then we donned our caps; one smiling group. With dignity and elation. Stiff collars, bibs, dresses of blue And dainty aprons of white, Accepting responsibility as a true Watts nurse We bore the torch both day and night. Patiently teaching, loving and serving That is an old Watts tradition! Gaining knowledge with compassion and loyalty. What a beautiful transition! Seniors! Another step toward the goal! No happier group in all the land. We lead the school one long bright year. And on our caps we wore a black band. And now that the journey is almost o'er Let not one say “The battle’s won!” For now in cap, and dress of white Remember—the fight has just begun! By Nell Propst.
