if Dedicated Man ln 1961 mathematics teachers were in short supply in California and it happened that Watsonville High School needed a teacher! And, as luck would have it, out of the blue came a letter from a place called Salmon, idaho. The person writing the letter indicated that a teacher from there was planning to apply for a iob at Watsonville High School and that the school wouid greatly benefit if he were hired as an addition to the staff. And . , . benefit Watsonville Highrhe has! Mr. La Von Thorne is a master teacher - one wiil be long remem- bered by the students he patiently encouraged and helped through some difficult subjects. Arriving at school while most of us are stiil asleep, he begins instructing his 7:00 a,m. Senior Calculus class. During a his preparation and lunch periods he can be found in his class- room again giving help to all stu- dents needing assistance. Students of his who go on to a university in- variably send back the words thanks Mr. Thorne for the soiid foundation you gave us. l'm doing well in math- ematics because of it . 4 Mr. Thorne has a 8.5. from the Uni- High he is responsible for the initiat- ing and teaching of the Advanced Placement Program in Mathematics and he has sponsored an active math club which has won many honors over the years. He has devoted many hours to the scholarship committee and personally writes many, many letters of recommendation for his Seniors applying for college en- trance, ln thinking of Mr. Thorne, most re- call his friendly, warm, and caring personality. Patience, the virtue of wisdom, is demonstrated by Mr. Thorne not only with his many, often trying, stu- dents, but also in his love of fishing - a sport he has pursued since child- hood in a smail mountain communi- ty of ldaho. When Mr. Thorne re- tires, he intends to devote much of his time to that sport which he truly loves. Fortunately, his wife Theta en- joys fishing too. We, the students of Watsonville High School, would like to take this opportunity to tell you, Mr. i.aVon Thorne, that we greatiyv appreciate the care and respect you have shown us throughout the years. versity of Colorado.
