The Lightweight Reserves exemplified the great potential of some up-and-coming freshmen. Outstanding freshmen were Gene Cabading, David Miller, Allan Yamamoto, and Alfonso Rodriguez. The Reserves emerged from the season with a 2 and 2 record, beating North Salinas and Salinas but losing to Monterey and Santa Cruz. When the dust settled from football season the Reserves had tied for second place with Santa Cruz in the C.C.A.L. Coach Norman Haney drilled the team and saw they were always doing their utmost. William So was elected season captain. Linernen Ken Hashimoto, a sophomore, and Phil Sakakihara, iunior, deserve recogni- tion. V Uxx COACH HANEY W. SO-Captain VARSITY BASKETB LL Front row: Ed Kelly, Ron Batchelder, Mike Orozco, Tim Coffey, Jerry Brown, Wayne Holt, Bob Matiasevich. Second row: Coach Staley, Frank Hamisch, Darrel Bumgardner, Norm Norris, Gary Rose, and George Cursi. Completing the season in the middle of league standings, the varsity basketball team provided thrills and chills in every contest. Coach Ron Staley's Wildcatz played as a team rather than as individuals. Senior Ed Kelly was a real ball of fire on the court. Ed, elected captain, led the team in scoring. Sharp-shooters Wayne Holt and Bob Matiasevich provided excitement and timely baskets. Both are iuniors and should be the heart of next year's team. Although shorter than the average player, Mike Orozco proved to be a real thorn in the side of the opponents. He was always there when help was needed. Other outstanding players were Jerry Brown, Ron Batchelder, Tim Coffey, Norm Norris, and Mark Amrein. Each one of them contributed strength and spirit to the exciting games. In his first year of coaching at W.U.H.S., Coach McGarvey seemed like an old pro. The J. V. team is composed of players who haven't enough experience to make the varsity. Each game the team looked better and at the conclusion of the season most were varsity potentials Freshman Mike Yahiro was a fireball. He never was still enough for the opponents to catch him or the ball. .Keep your eye on iunior Mike Lopes. He was out there plugging for a win, no matter whether the score was in their favor or ours. Bob Wilcox, a iunior, could be counted on to do his best at all times. A threat to the opposing team, Bob was often high point man for the game. Most of the J. V. team will be returning next year. Good relievers and starters are a must Firemen this year were seniors Mark Amrein and Jerry Han non and iunior southpaw Don Ditlevsen. Han non, usually a fielder, surprised everyone with his pitching skill. An underrated player was John Marcus, whose spirit at the games was unsurpassed. Other seniors on the Wildcat nine were Ed Kelly, Jerry Brown, Bob Bivins, Larry Holt, and Allen Litchfield. Joe Gerber, Wayne Holt, and Bob Matiasevich will be returning to win next year. J. V. BASEBALL The best rookie of the J. V. team was freshman David Miller. He possesses some terrific pitches and with some experience he should develop into a most valuable player . Chico Castro is another player who was eyed with amazement. His dazzling plays and timely hits were at the appropriate time. Behind the plate was Fred DeWald, talking up a storm to all the other players. Juniors Ray Nielsen, John Ashcraft and John Chapin came through like heroes when they were needed.
