Our rallies and pageants, our plays and operettas, all owe much of their success to her skillful and devoted efforts. Those who are in her classes are being given a training which will add to their appre- ciation and enjoyment of music all their lives. For these generous and valuable contributions and in recognition of her friendly, helpful spirit, we gratefully dedicate to her this 1954 issue of the Manzanita. Some of the more important work done by the board this year was the sanctioning of the call for two new clubs, the Dance Band Club and the Engineers Club. A request to have Pom-Pom girls was granted by the members. Five girls were chosen and they were a colorful addition to our football games and rallies. Money for new athletic equipment was also approved. All concessions at basketball and football games were granted by the board. A great deal of discussion was also held regarding a sink- ing fund for the bleachers in the football stadium. Mr. Struck, guidance director, has a very capable secretary in Miss Lois Reed. These girls are all your friends and are always wil- ing to help. To our delight when school opened this fall we had a new cafeteria. No longer did we have to eat in the dark, cramped basement of the old building. Instead we now had a light colorful room. The dining hall will seat about 450 people. A plate lunch consisting of a main dish, salad, dessert, milk, and bread and butter, costs the students only 3Uc. A la Carte dishes, including hot dogs, salads, soup, assorted sandwiches, and desserts, range in cost from lO to 20 cent. The cafeteria also provides a separate dining room for the faculty. dance but a stage on which a band can play. ,- ,......n,,,.,,W it ,, The cafeteria provides a wonderful big place to hold school dances. What a glorious day it was smearing Freshmen with lipstick and basking in the glory and honor of finally being Iuniors. The by-words of the class were activities and fun. And there was plenty of these with Bob Petersen as president. Backing him up all the way were the other officers elected by the class. At one of the first rallies of the year the class banner made its first appearance. The class sponsored the April Showers dance, and everyone who attended had a wonderful time. One of the terrific things about being a lunior is that you can finally attend the Prom. But a lot of money had to be raised by selling magazines before the Prom could be held and it was a lunior, Carol Knowles, who received the jack pot built up during the magazine drive. Mr. Moser, class advisor, can certainly be proud of such an active group. MR. Never before in the history of the CCAL Conference has a team won five football championships in a row. lt's doubtful that even Coach Emmett Geiser, in his twenty-fourth year at the helm of the Wildcats, and assistant coach, Bud Rowland, figured to win before the season started. ln fact, Mr. Geiser was sing- ing the blues, when practice started, about a shortage of tackles, guards, and ends. But, with the help of last year's junior varsity players who moved up to the varsity, and the newcomers to the squad as well as the handful of veterans, the great team was formed. Ten of the squad were named all CCALe four of the ten were named to both the offensive and defensive teams. Those named were: Bob Fierro, Les Hopkins, Larry Ogden, Max Anderson, Ken Antle, Don Bowles, Dave Cole, Al Provence, Iim Zachary, and Chad Smith, Dave Gallegos, although not named, gave the rooters many a thrill with his touchdown runs. Ken Antle was named to the All-American prep squad and also to the All-Northern California team. Winning the 1953 championship, and setting a conference and school record of five CCAL championships in a row, is quite a tribute to a team that had its veteran coach singing the blues before the season's start. Although the Cats were leading throughout the first half, everyone felt let-down, when as the final buzzer sounded, we had lost by 14 points. The team fought hard throughout the season, and they showed improvement with each game played. On the last game of the season, the Cats went against their rival, Santa Cruz. The team coached by Mr. Devine and Mr. Gobel got oft to a rather poor start by being beaten by Mon- terey. The scores ot the varsity and lightweight teams were SU-20 and 60-6. ln the second meet against Car- mel the teams made a better showing. The varsity was beaten 47-28 and the lightweights lost 41-25. Other meets this year were held with Monterey, Carmel, Boulder Creek, and the CCAL meet in Carmel in early May. All ot this year's team will be back next year and with so many returning swimmers the school expects great things from this new addition to Watsonville High's sports. The pool, a new inovation in swimming pool design, is a beautiful addition to our campus. Classes are offered in swimming for any one who wishes to take them. Girls swim Tuesdays, Thursdays, and every other Friday. When the girls aren't swimming the boys use the swimming pool. The pool was ready for student use during the first part of the second semester. The pool is also open for public use on Saturdays and Sundays. lt was also open all week during Easter vacation. We are looking forward to many hours of fun at our new pool this summer. One of the most exciting games was the junioresenior game played in g sf the rain. lt was a rough game with many of the players landing in mud puddles as they ran back and forth on the slippery field. But the seniors came through with flying colors and won the championship. Some of the outstanding players were Arletta Hada, Pat Maples, Betty Simas, Gay Hansen, and Darlene Mangen. ' ' First Row: N. The Iuniors gave them the most competition of all, but the Seniors won a very close game. ' These girls deserve a lot of credit giving up much of their time to improve interclass sports. They also are rewarded for their efforts with GAA. points and the fun they get out of this terrific game. Those who witnessed these games saw scrne very good playing and exciting moments.
