--n-gun-v Q. 32,9 MRS. WORTHINGTON Dean of Girls Perhaps no surer sign of the arduous character of the work per- formed by Mrs. Worthington could have been given to us than her serious illness in the fall of the year. Years of unselfish service to a mountainous body of detail and a constant pressure of human prob- lems exacted a toll which left the entire community in anxious doubt. But her return before the holidays reassured us all and served to remind us, if We needed it, ot the truly great Work she performed. Merit' Board Wx can Q , f- 1-- V MRGEISER Dean of Boys ' This year Mr. Geiser added to his already tull program in the athletic department the Work of guiding boys in various problems of adjustment. His long experience, combined with an unusual capacity for work, made him a welcome addition to the administrative depart- ment. The real achievements of people in giudance are not easy to list and point to, but for many boys who came in Contact with him, a consciousness of clearer vision will be an unspoken tribute of the highest Worth. Throughout the years that our high school has had the merit system, many fine groups of students have worked with a high degree of wisdom and democratic spirit for the constant improvement of student body, school relationships, It is a real tribute to the spirit of our school that these merit boards, to which this year's is no exception, have unfailingly given their best efforts in a job which receives little recognition. Student Board Having discovered the present school constitution is inadequate and outdated, the Student Board des- ignated the writing of a new constitution as its main task for the year. The board appointed a com- mittee of juniors and seniors to undertake the job. Each section was assigned to two students, who were instructed to turn the complete draft in to the secretary, who would then compile the sections and hand them over to Mr. Crook. As would the majority of such committees, it met with a number of difficulties. However, undaunted by its seeming failures, the group Was still working at the time this book was sent to the printers. It was believed that an acceptable constitution would be finished by the end of the semester. -21-

not MR, L. L. IONES Superintendent' The Watsonville schools began the year with a new superinten- dent, the first in forty-two years. Under the wise and skillful guidance of Mr. MacQuiddy, a small school had grown into the present large system. To the new problems posed by growth and changing condi- tions, Mr. Iones has brought a fresh and vigorous approach. His knowledge of school problems and his enlightened solutions of them have won for him the respect and liking of the entire community. We are happy to add to a belated welcome our best wishes for the future. Board of Trustees Q Y Rx it xx Hg- '1?r:'NYe . :..j . . tqwritg' . . P r'iif-Ief-fr1r?'- I sa 'K tx rl N if I MR. E. E. cRooK Principal An old friend needs no introduction, but it is a pleasure to give him welcome to a new position. Under the new organization which for the first time gives the high school a principal separate from the superintendent, Mr. Crook assumed the difficult and often thankless task of guiding the high school on its path. The judicious and thought- ful decisions which he has made coupled with the democratic spirit which is characteristic of him, have more than fulfilled the high ex- pectations we all held. Listed below - in order to acquaint you with the accomplishments of the hoard - are a few of this year's transactions which effect the stu- dents' lives. The board's main decision was its authorization of plans for new shops, a cafeteria, and a music building. The shops might be finished by the second semester of next year. In addition to the proposed new buildings, plans for the use of the YMCA's new swimming pool were discussed. At its completion, the pool will be available to all students. Under the board's supervision, the students participated in the annual County Fair for the first time. Left to right: Mr. Harold Trafton. Mr. Howard Ditlevsen.
