In all activities in which they led the way, a fine school spirit was evident. The service which these students rendered has a value to the school which it is not easy to estimate. Student Board Having discovered the present school constitution is inadequate and outdated, the Student Board des- ignated the writing of a new constitution as its main task for the year. The board appointed a com- mittee of juniors and seniors to undertake the job. Each section was assigned to two students, who were instructed to turn the complete draft in to the secretary, who would then compile the sections and hand them over to Mr. Crook. As would the majority of such committees, it met with a number of difficulties. However, undaunted by its seeming failures, the group Was still working at the time this book was sent to the printers. It was believed that an acceptable constitution would be finished by the end of the semester. -21- --n-gun-v Q. 32,9 MRS. WORTHINGTON Dean of Girls Perhaps no surer sign of the arduous character of the work per- formed by Mrs. Worthington could have been given to us than her serious illness in the fall of the year. Years of unselfish service to a mountainous body of detail and a constant pressure of human prob- lems exacted a toll which left the entire community in anxious doubt. But her return before the holidays reassured us all and served to remind us, if We needed it, ot the truly great Work she performed. Merit' Board Wx can Q , f- 1-- V MRGEISER Dean of Boys ' This year Mr. Geiser added to his already tull program in the athletic department the Work of guiding boys in various problems of adjustment. His long experience, combined with an unusual capacity for work, made him a welcome addition to the administrative depart- ment. The real achievements of people in giudance are not easy to list and point to, but for many boys who came in Contact with him, a consciousness of clearer vision will be an unspoken tribute of the highest Worth. Throughout the years that our high school has had the merit system, many fine groups of students have worked with a high degree of wisdom and democratic spirit for the constant improvement of student body, school relationships, It is a real tribute to the spirit of our school that these merit boards, to which this year's is no exception, have unfailingly given their best efforts in a job which receives little recognition. Seated: Teresa Steianini. Mrs. Worthington, Diana Daley: Standing: Gordon Harris. Mr. Geiser. Bill Marinovich. I1 'EV not MR, L. L. IONES Superintendent' The Watsonville schools began the year with a new superinten- dent, the first in forty-two years. Under the wise and skillful guidance of Mr. MacQuiddy, a small school had grown into the present large system. To the new problems posed by growth and changing condi- tions, Mr. Iones has brought a fresh and vigorous approach. His knowledge of school problems and his enlightened solutions of them have won for him the respect and liking of the entire community. We are happy to add to a belated welcome our best wishes for the future. Board of Trustees Q Y Rx it xx Hg- '1?r:'NYe . :..j . . tqwritg' . . P r'iif-Ief-fr1r?'- I sa 'K tx rl N if I MR. E. E. cRooK Principal An old friend needs no introduction, but it is a pleasure to give him welcome to a new position. Under the new organization which for the first time gives the high school a principal separate from the superintendent, Mr. Crook assumed the difficult and often thankless task of guiding the high school on its path. The judicious and thought- ful decisions which he has made coupled with the democratic spirit which is characteristic of him, have more than fulfilled the high ex- pectations we all held. Listed below - in order to acquaint you with the accomplishments of the hoard - are a few of this year's transactions which effect the stu- dents' lives. The board's main decision was its authorization of plans for new shops, a cafeteria, and a music building. The shops might be finished by the second semester of next year. In addition to the proposed new buildings, plans for the use of the YMCA's new swimming pool were discussed. At its completion, the pool will be available to all students. Under the board's supervision, the students participated in the annual County Fair for the first time. Left to right: Mr. Harold Trafton. Mr. Howard Ditlevsen. One of the great stumbling blocks to international under- standing is the inability ot great groups of people to know clearly what a foreign group is thinking and saying. The contribution which this department makes to a more ordered world is its offering of French, Spanish, and Latin. A sign ot the interest of our students in language is the large number of students enrolled in the courses. Mathematics In these days ot the atomic bomb, the importance of a thorough grounding in mathematics for some students is obviously ot greater importance than ever be- fore. For those who will enter a profession in which mathematics is a basic tool, our mathematics department offers the beginning Work. But the department does not stop there. It gives to everyone the necessary skill to make the calcu- lations necessary to get along in daily life. With the advantage ot a long history ol teaching behind it, present day methods can be counted on to do the proper train- ing with the maximum amount of results for the minimum amount of time. We are fortunate in having a variety of studies in this department, such as biology, chemistry, and general science under the direction of Miss Mar- tin, Mr. Dyche, and Mr. Iensen. The interest which these sub- jects hold for the public was dem- onstrated on Public Schools Night when the science rooms were crowded With interested parents Watching students conducting ex- periments and examining various pieces of equipment and displays. The importance of the basic sci- ences is only beginning to be rea- lized by the general public. When one reflects that as short a time ago as 1880 surgeons in our hos- pitals scoffed at the necessity for Washing their hands before an operation and that the existence of microbes and their relationship to disease was only just being un- derstood, the strides which have been made in science in the past seventy years and those advanc- es yet to come can be seen in their true light. In the promotion of these advances science classes in high schools throughout the World have played a significant part. Commerce The Commerce Department goes a long way toward preparing stu- dents for jobs after graduation in such classifications as stenog- rapher, business agent, bookkeep- er, and other positions of a like nature. The value of such training is hard to overestimate. The im- portance of accurate records and complete information on all phases of a business is becoming increas- ingly acute, and those students who choose training in this de- partment are rewarded well in satisfaction as well as income. But the work of the department does not end with students who wish to work immediately upon gradua- tion from high school. Many who intend to do college work enroll in typing and shorthand courses with a resultant increase in their effici- cncy as students. The department is fortunate in having particularly well qualified people to carry on instructions. It is not so fortunate in its quarters, but it is hoped that new construc- tion in the near future will provide more and better space. It is now commonly recognized that a much greater emphasis should be placed on enrolling students in courses which fit them for definite kinds of employment immediately upon their graduation from high school, and the skills which are to be ac- quired in this department are of great importance in achieving this new direction in high school education. The mighty seniors starred in ath- letics, scholarship, and many other branches of activity in high school. With the juniors, they sold more magazine subscriptions than have ever been sold before, held a prom at Rio del Mar which was at- tended by couples only for the first time in the history of the school, and enjoyed the closing exercises such as the picnic and the graduation exercises with a wholeheartedness which only those can have who realize that the doors of high school are closing behind them for the last time. The championship had not been decided when this book went to press, but Watsonville was still in there as we took a last hasty glance toward the diamond. The team was well- balanced and it is difficult to pick out any individuals who stood out over the others, but Conrad Causey deserves special mention for his stellar performance in the pitcher's box. Tennis Lack of experience hampered the tennis team this season. Coach Ronald Staley, recent graduate of San Iose State College, emphasized fundamentals in training the squad which consisted of five freshmen, four sophomores, and one junior. Preparation for seasons to come was Coach Staley's motto. Number one man for the year was Glenn Dinsmore with Nick Kralj, Anthony Copriviza, Mike Mann, Troy George, Mitsuo Uchida, Fred Richelieu, Richard Cantu, Edwin Inger- soll, and Richard Ulrichsen following in that order. 1. 4-if- T-. Golf Led by a potential top flight golfer, Richard Lien, this year's squad of clubmen was composed chiefly of freshmen and sophomores. As in tennis, the coach, Mr. Geiser, found it necessary to work for future teams rather than to pin his hopes on successes this year.
