THE MANZANITA J Watsonville Union High School 'T SENIDRS MAY OUR FLIGHT BE STRAIGHT AND TRUE FTER four years of preparation the class of '30 is taking off on their first solo flight. Beginning June 20 they will no longer be under the guidance of the experienced pilots called the faculty, but will be on their own responsi- bility. Their performances in this 'Aground school show that they have the qualities of high flyers, occasionally even of aces. From the very first of the training the students showed great interest. One of the things that they were especially fond of was a form of stunt flying known as athletics. By their experiences in football, baseball, track, basketball. and tennis they gained strength and agility that will be of service in future flights , The Seniors this year broke the record for arriving at Scholarship Field. Twenty-five made this ten point landing! Another interest of this group was the musical motors: these were three types. The largest is the Band. This motor was well able to stand competition. as a great deal of power was generated by the '30 students. The two other motors, smaller but none the less important, were the Culee Club and the Or- chestra. Certain members were prominent in running these also. The Seniors originated the idea of getting a sweater with flying colors. blue and gold, which seems to be the favorite color of all good planes. lt was partly due to this same group that the school enjoys a Junior-Senior Prom. The Seniors also had charge of preparing the good-will plane Man- zanita for its annual flight. In the plays and operetta they worked unselfishly for the good of the productions, with the result that many spectators felt that the dramatic work was exceptionally line and that the Christmas pageant set a new goal for co- operation of different departments and for high ideals in type of production. For the past year this group of good-will flyers held the highest posi- tions in the government at the ground school and now on leaving they say: We the class of l93O are about to try our wings in our first solo flight. Whether our Wings be those of little birds to bear us not far from our nests, or the Wings of mighty planes, to sweep us through uncharted skies,-may our flight be straight and true, and may we make a safe landing at the goal we seek. -DOROTHEA ELLIS lf Page Ten
