Trip 4. 26 Senior Class History Through The Seasons With The Class Of 1956 Fall 1952 -1 This season will surely be recalled many times in the hearts and minds of the class of 1956, for we were then starting our four delightful years, which we realize now were perhaps four of the best Years we will ever spend. Here are a few excerpts from our class minutes of that fall season: A meeting of the Freshman Class was held September 15, 1952, for the purpose of electing officers. Those elected were President, Robert Harrison: Vice President, Vance Maneval: Secretary, Patricia Williams: Treasurer, Gene Long. Since there was no more business to transact, the meeting was adjourned. At a meeting of the Freshman Class October 1, 1952, it was decided to have a hayride to Wertz's Grove, where we would have a hot dog roast. The above quotes from our minutes name only a few of the many happy and exciting events that took place during our Freshman year. At the beginning of the second season, or our Sophomore year, we were, of course, looking forward to even bigger and better events than those of our Freshman year. One of the accomplishments of our Sophomore year under the leadership of Patricia Williams, President: LaVarnie Muffly, Vice President: Ruth Aunkst, Secre- tary: and Vance Maneval, Treasurer, was the choosing of our class colors fscarlet and whitej. Our first big dance, which we decided to call the May Day Dance , was to be held April 30, 1954, and a bake sale March 27, 1954, at Patton's Drug store. Both the dance and the bake sale proved to be very successful, but with the coming of May, all thoughts were turned toward vacation. On our return to school in September of 1954 we faced, perhaps, our hardest year at W.l'l.S. After getting accustomed to the idea of such a full schedule, thoughts once more turned to class activities for our third season. The junior Class met September 21, 1954, for the purpose of electing officers. Those elected were President, Ronald Callenbergerg Vice President, Roberta Zettle- moyerg Secretary, Ruth Aunkst, and Treasurer, William Aughenbaugh. Our activities for the junior year proved to be very successful and even gave us some new experiences in the field of acting, because along with our two memorable dances, The Autumn Hop , and Cupid's Frolic , we presented our first class play on March 18, and 19, entitled The Nervous Wreck . We closed the book on our junior year with a party for the outgoing seniors, which was held May 17, 1955. In September of 1955 we returned once more to W.H.S., but there was some- thing different about returning this time, for everyone realized that this would be our last season for the enjoyment we had found in our previous years. I On September 14, 1955, our first Senior class meeting was held for the purpose of electing officers. Those elected were Ronald Callenberger, President: William Aughenbaugh, Vice President: Ruth Aunkst, Secretary, and Roberta Zettlemoyer, Treasurer. Our first big success in our Senior year was the dance called The Dance of The Hurricanes held October 14, 1955. Our Senior class play, jumping jewels , held December 16 and 17, 1955, and our last dance, a Sadie Hawkins held March 9, 1956, greatly increased the size of our class treasury. Now, as though being pulled from a dream into reality, we realize that Class Night, Commencement, and the class trip, even though they will provide an abundant supply of memories. mark the end of a very happy four years at W.H.S. 27 NAME Bill Aughenbaugh Ruth Aunkst Albert Bachman lohn Balliet Sam Brouse Ted Buss Ronnie Callenherger lim Criswell loanne Fry Dean Fulmer Dick Funk Ed Gold Kay Harrison Bob Harrison Virginia Hoffman john Hursh Raymond larrett Ed Keister Bob Kilgus Paul Kitchen Porter Krisher Marjorie Kurtz Gene Long Harold McCormick Vance Maneval Dick Martin David Neufer lake Nicholas Nancy Plotts Irvin Reynolds Doris Shoemaker Harold Shook Dave Sickles Gary Snyder Francis Steinbacher jerry Strickler Bill Weaver Herb Weller Don Wenrick jim Wesner Pat Williams Roberta Zettle moyer Seasons Preclictions LIKE Riding horses Laughing Girls Girls lce skating Girls Spaghetti Food Dancing Hunting Pigs Girls Sleep Football Roller skating and dancing Movies Money Eating. and popular music Girls Pretty girls Hillbilly music Square dancing, Girls Dixieland jazz Spaghetti Cars Hunting Girls Food Terry Square-dancing Dogs Music Girls Girls Football Baseball Airplanes Movies Girls Letter writing Boys skating, and fun DISLIKE Dressing up Waiting Cats Slow drivers Hillbilly music Empty gas tanks a Stuck-up girls Silly girls Unhappiness Football Old maids English Conceited people Conceited girls Conceited boys Hillbilly music Braggers Wise guys Studebakers Red heads Liberace nd pocketbooks Being alone and washing windows Cats Hillbilly music Silly girls VVork Opera Cats Getting up Other girls Noise while trying to sleep Snakes Practical jokers Girls smoking Stuck-up girls Conceited people Stuck-up girls Cats Certain girls Conceited girls Procrastination Silly boys 28 AMBITION Farmer Seautician Farmer Banker Mechanical engineer Machinist Civil engineer Math teacher Nurse Draftsman A farmer Teacher Nurse A success A WAVE Woodworker Truck driver Industrial teacher SPRING, 1976 Best dressed man of 1976 Making mud packs Cat farmer Cop Writing hillbilly music Running out of gas D.ug-store cowboy Food sampler Mambo instructor Football player Raising pigs for old maids English teacher Night nurse A taxi driver School teacher Star in hillbilly movies Armored-truck driver Billboard painter Auto mechanic, stock car racersalcsman for Studebaker Game warden Woodworker To be successful Electrical engineer Aeronautical engineer Major league baseball pla Officer in the Army Machinist Farmer Million-heiress Farmer Member of a Polka Band Marine Research chemist Mechanic Gym teacher or coach School teacher Air Force officer Engineer Butcher Farmer Chemist Secretary yer Married to a red head Stand-in for Liberace Window washer Owner of a cat farm Singer with Bob and Dean Fi:st baseman for the Dodgers Woman hater Opera singer A famous cat breeder Getting up at 1:00 a.m. to open a beanery Married to another girl Living under a bowling alley M. Mr. Cotner. The 1955 football season began with an easy win over Trevorton. The follow- ing game with Bald Eagle-Nittany was one of the bright spots of the season. With ten seconds to go, Sandy Cocks threw a touch-down pass to Vance Nlaneval that broke the tie and won the game. The next week the team traveled to Canton. where they suffered a severe setback at the hands of the Bulldogs. Playing under the lights with Muncy, the Huskies suffered their second loss of the season, giving them a two and two record. At Montgomery. the charges of Mr. Cotner and Mr. Flickinger ran rough-shod over the Red Raiders, and then, the following week, handed Lewisburg a defeat. Thr Huskies lost the next game to Montoursville. On a mud-covered field at Mifflinburg, the Orange and Blue easily defeated the Wildcats. Playing under temporary light. the Huskies shut out Mahanoy Ioint to win their sixth game of the season. ln the last game, the Watsontown eleven lost to Milton before a packed stadium, The Huskies closed the season with a six-win and four-loss record. When pre-season practice begins next fall, eleven seniors will be missing from the squad. Bill Aughenbaugh. Francis Steinbacher, and Harry Mathias will be missf ing from the guard positions. The tackle slots will no longer be held down by Ron Callenberger, lim Wesner, and Darell Phillips. Two ends, Bob Menges and Bill Shell, will graduate. The backfield will suffer the loss of Vance Maneval, Bob Harrison. and Gene Long, Despite the loss of these graduating seniors, the coaches will mold a good team out of the under classmen. 55 Varsity Basketball First row: Max Lynn, George Cocks, Gene Long, Bob Harrison, lim Criswell, Bill Wea1ve1', Delmar Prowant. Standing: Mr. Flickinger, Herb Bright, Bill Derr, lack Aunkst. Vance Maneval, Donald Bridge, Oscar Hans, Iudd Clemens. Mr. Flickingcr piloted the Varsity baseball team to a five win, seven loss season in 1955. Last season, Gene Long, in his best form, did most of the pitching. He also came through with tlie schools second no-hit game. But his teammates, although doing their ltest, ltad an on-and-off season at bat and in the field. Tlie tccni got off to a slow start. but looked very good by the end ofthe season, ln several of the games extra innings were played before the Huskies went down to defeat. Sophomorcs and juniors made up most of the team. Though g acluaticn the team will lose only four Seniors. This should give the Huskies a good fighting chance next year. The team wishes to thank Coach Flickinger for his capable coaching and his willingness to help them. 58 unior High Basketball First row: Wayne Burrows, Clyde Walck, Terry Aunkst, Iohn Packard, Bruce Zettlemoyer.
