McComb-0, Laurel- 14 The Watkins High Tornadoes whipped the McComb Tigers 14-O with a couple of touchdowns and a safety. In the first quarter Charlie Giroux bolted through the Tiger defense on a 5 yard run. The PAT was'no good and the score was 6-0. In the very next set of downs, McComb's fullback Moochie Allen tried to go wide and Marvin Ace McCurdy and Victor Hudgies broke through to down him in the end zone for a two-point safety. ln the early moments of the second quarter, McCurdy turned hero again. The Tornadoe linebacker fell on a Tiger fumble at the McComb 8 shortly after Timmy Cranford had boomed a 44-yard punt dead at the McComb 8. Laurel set up shop again and Martin, the big full- back, went in from six yards out for the TD on the drive play, after a pick-up of 2 yards on the first play. The score was then 14-0. The remainder of the game was spent by both teams stopping the other. The Rams had gotten on the board early with a first quarter field goal of 38 yards. In the second quarter. Rams quarterback Harry Anderson threw a 49 yard pass to flanker Tyrone Williams to in- crease the score to 10-O. ln the second half, Anderson again threw to Williams, this time for a 27 yard touchdown pass. This made the score I7-0. As the game wore toward the first stages. Laurel got possession twice inside the Rams' 20 only to have fumbles, lose yardage. and kill its chances of catching up. On the first play from scrimmage Tiger quarterback Scotty Sheffield fum- bled and Tornado defender Bob Bergin fell on it at the Tiger 25. Runs by Giroux, Brown, and Martin led to the first touchdown of the night for the Tornadoes. In the second quarter, a field goal by Dennis and a touchdown by Martin increased the score to 16-0. With 2:00 left before intermission, Victor Hudges separated the ball from Tiger quarterback Jeff Eure and David Hinton fell on the fumble. From there, Laurel moved upfield with the running of Charlie Giroux. The drive bogged down at Tiger eight and Dennis booted a field goal to make the score 19-0 at halftime. In the second half, Timmy Cranford passed to Tri- plett for a 37-yard touchdown. On the following kickoff, Harrington broke up the sideline for 94 yards and the Tigers' only score of the game.
