South Natchez-17, Laurel-7 Laurel received the opening kickoff and marched down field from their own 23 with the running of Todd Oliver and the screen passes of Tony Taylor to Oliver and Micheal Barrett. However, the drive bogged down at the South Natchez five-yard line. Laurel picked up some action in the second half with the work of the defense. Finally, with 2:40 left in the third quarter, Laurel drove two-thirds the way down the field to put its points on the board. The score came after a run by Taylor. Brian Piccalo', Den- nis kicked the extra point and ended the scoring for the night. The Tornadoes took the opening kickoff at the 10 yard line. and Jay Porter car- ried it out to the Laurel 38. On the first play from scrim- mage. Rocky Whitten ran the ball up the middle to the Moss Point 47. for the first down. Moss Point took over on their own 9. where they began to move the ball. De- fensive plays by Ace McCurdy. David Hinton, Bob Bergin. and Jay Porter held the Tigers at the Moss Point 29. Beginning the second half. runs by Todd Oliver and Tony Taylor earned the Tornadoes a first down at the Laurel 40. but were later forced to punt. Micheal Sam- pson picked up a fumble and McCurdy intercepted a Moss Point After a scoreless half. Moss Point took their second series of the 3rd quarter and drove 40 yards in 9 plays for a TD. Three plays later. the Tigers scored and kicked the extra point. making it 14-0. in the 4th quarter. FINAL SCORE: MOSS POINTWI4. Picayune-O, Laurel-7 The Laurel Tornadoes raised their season record to two wins after defeating Picayune. In the opening minutes ofthe game, the defensive credit went to Joe Pruitt, g'Ace McCurdy, David Hinton, Lawrence Ducksworth, Victor Hudgies, and David Powell. Laure1,s first drive began on their own 45, after a 15-yard punt re- turn by Michael Triplett. Timmy Cranford passed to Todd Oliver for 4 yards and David Martin carried another six for the lst down. Mar- tin picked up 13 yards for another lst down. Later Laurel took the ball at the 39 on a pass intercepted by Brian Dennis. Laurel drove a total of 61 yards in seven plays for the game's only TD. Cranford passed 20 yards to Barrett for a lst down at the Picayune 40. Martin then carried twice for 7 and 18 yards and another lst down. Cranford passed to Michael Barrett for the TD. Brian Den- nis kicked the PAT.
