Meridian-6, Laurel-3 The Laurel Tornadoes had defeated the Meridian Wildcats for five straight years. However, the Wildcats were deter- mined to be victorious. The ball changed hands several times during the first quarter due to fumbles. At the end of the first quarter the score was 0-0. On a second quarter play, Tony Taylor bobbled an ex- change with fullback Rocky Whitten and Meridian's Mark McCormick fell on it at the Tornado 15. Meridian quarter- back Butler handed off to tailback Don Mosely for the only TD of the game. In the third quarter Brian Dennis split the uprights from 30 yards out for a three pointer. The fourth quarter was marred with penalties as both teams tried in vain to mount scoring drives but costly fumbles killed their chances. ! at . 'w .ni ,mi 5 cy, Pascagoula- 12, Laurel-8 Laurel's record fell to 0-2 as the powerful Panthers in- vaded Laurel. A pass of2l yards from Palmer to Randy Clarr was the first TD of the night. The PAT was not a success leaving the score 6-0. Laurel's only TD came when Taylor dropped back and found Cranford in the end zone with a 16-yard TD toss. Brian Dennis came in to attempt PAT. but a low snap from center caused Taylor to pick up the football and race around left end for 2 points. The score 8-6 with 10:40 left in the game. Three Tornado defenders got a shot at the speeding Panther on the run, he got loose and ran a 96-yard TD to end the game. FINAL SCORE: PASCAGOULAfl2.
