The reels turn, the camera clicks, the action is constant, as our years in high school progress. Neverending, we thought. Four years of studies, fun, new friends, will last forever. Suddenly, we hear “cut”. The film ends, the years are over, graduation is here. Movies can take us back into history. They can recreate the lives of great men and women, just as our yearbook can recreate our lives in high school. The yearbook staff, made up of a few dedicated students, have literally seen the bright lights, felt the urgency of the camera, touched the action, and heard the cut at deadline time. Many nights and weekends were given up as the cameras rolled and the action continued. It is with this theme in mind that we proudly present to all our 1984 yearbook. Yearbook Opening 3 . . .in 1952 “A teacher affects eternity. He can never tell where his influence stops.—Henry Adams By using the camera in different ways, the filmmaker can express different points of view. So it is with Mr. Frank Steber. As he uses his knowledge and techniques in different ways, he can express to us many different points of view. Through the years, 34 in all, Mr. Steber has helped the lives of countless students. He came to Watkins Glen in 1955. He stayed with the district through all 29 years, and even taught some of our current faculty. He has been active in the senior play for numerous years, headed the Seneca Literary Society, and is head of the English Department. But with all these extra activities, Mr. Steber has still kept the interest and mind of the student first. It is with great pride that we, the class of 1984, dedicate our yearbook to Mr. Frank Steber. 4 Dedication THE WAY WE WERE “A romantic, stylish and thoroughly enjoyable movie.” —REX REED. She was a member of the tennis team and the senior class, although when she returns to Finland she will have two more years in high school. She has two brothers at home. She spent part of the year with the Richards family and part with the Fragola family. She has gained new insights into the American lifestyle and a better command of the English language. Lori Bruce (left) and Gwen James (right), both seniors, spent last year abroad. Lori spent the year with three families in Parma, in the north central part of Italy. She learned French and fluent Italian. Her favorite experience was skiing in the French, Swiss, and Italian Alps on holidays. Gwen James spent the year with three families in Herning, located in the middle of Jutland, Denmark. She learned Norwegian and fluent Dutch. Her favorite experiences were visiting the Tivoli Gardens and Copenhagen and other major cities. Both girls gained a new sense of independence and self-confidence. All of us gathered in the gym to participate in a de-meaning event known as freshmen initiation. The class of 1981 had a lot of fun humiliating us. The seniors of ’81 dressed us up in everything from wigs to diapers. The seniors made us eat lim-burger cheese, garlic, onions, lemons, and even had us chew on raw bones. Most of us were covered with shaving cream, chocolate pie, rotten eggs, and vaseline. The seniors made us kiss their feet, and shine their shoes. We pushed pennies down the hall with our noses and crawled on the floor using only our hands. The most demeaning event of the evening was the recitation of this chant: We are dirt. Yes, We bite the dust Seniors in you, our lives we entrust. We are illiterate, ignorant fools of the school. But through this all, we know that seniors rule. We are the filth, the scum, the rotting end And to each senior we will faithfully tend. We are the cheapest, the ugliest and definitely the worst And in our hearts, the Class of ’81, the Seniors will always be FIRST. The freshman display their ability in a chorus line. 12 The Way We Were Seniors Diane M. Hughey Mike Hughey Gwen James Jeffrey D. Jones Scott A. In the spring of their junior year. Julie Walker and David Post submitted designs for the fall magazine sale. Julie Metal, class president, selected Da vid’s design for the mugs, caps, and pins and Julie’s design for the sweatshirts. Because Da vid’s design had more detail, it was appropriate for the mugs, pins, and caps. David designed a bow with crossed spears, featured on the pins and mugs and a Seneca with crossed spears, featured on the cap. Seniors who sold one magazine earned a pin. Seniors sold $100 worth of magazines for a cap and $200 for a mug. David’s specialty is figure drawing. He is considering a career in architectural design. Julie designed a Seneca sending smoke puffs that say ’84. To earn a sweatshirt a senior needed to sell $300 worth of magazines. Julie is considering a future in fashion design. Mr. Smith Goes to Washington. Yes, Virginia, the Class of ’84 did manage to go to Washington, D. C. Approximately half of the Senior Class made the trip which was the highlight of the year. Even though a lot of sightseeing took place, (up at 6:30 for a full day of walking) most agree that the excitement occurred back at the motel. Who will forget the sword fights that took place every night to those unfortunate people who opened their doors to the Four Musketeers” or the surprise visit from the Beatles, made possible by Andy Stansfield, Joe Scaptura, Kent Duane, and Tom Augustine? We also witnessed a tag team wrestling bout in which there were a few casualties, a window and Chris Wickham. Or how about the group of monitors who helped the chaperones keep watch each night because of extenuating circumstances, such as “sleep walking” and “stuffing socks”. The chaperones also had their share of surprises, right, Mrs. Brown and Mrs. Loughlin? Not all of the momentous events took place at the motel; there was the Burn Brae Dinner Theatre where we all ate like pigs, and gave a standing ovation to the actors who entertained us with the musical, Annie. and the basketball game where we all bought our Washington Bullets sweatshirts but wound up losing anyway. There was the trip to Williamsburg, Va., made bearable by Andy’s rendition of a blindman, and the visit to the Capitol where we waited for a half hour in the rain to meet Stan Lundine. The trip to the National Zoo was something to see—especially the gorilla . . . GROSS! All in all, though, the trip was a blast made possible by the chaperones who acted almost human. We would like to thank them all; especially Mr. Morgan who was brave enough to take his first class trip with us, and Mr. Maas who decided to wait and take his last trip with us. The Class of 1985 shall miss your jokes. Not again! Seniors Jeff Jones. Melissa Peterson, Tim Thompson, Sue Secord, Joe Bierline. Kathy Anstey. Tim Rodabaugh. They marched in the Memorial Day and Flag Day Parades and the Gorham Pageant of Bands. The jazz band performed again at Willard, Gorham Pageant of Bands and the yearly concerts. This year, two new groups were formed. They are a woodwind and a brass quintet. They played at area churches and other public functions. iVh m ?, Joi —« M • • Stage Band: Front: Lee Morris. The Joyous Sound This year’s Chorus consisted of 32 members, 11 seniors, 9 juniors, and 12 sophomores. The Chorus has planned three concerts for the public and two competitions. The three concerts were the traditional Christmas, Lenten, and Spring Concerts. The Choral Christmas Concert was almost not performed because of Mr. Tolman’s illness and no accompanist. Mr. and Mrs. Tolman saved the performance. He came and directed the concert, and she accompanied the chorus. The Qualitones were a select group of Chorus members, six seniors, three juniors, and three sophomores. The Qualitones have carolled, performed for a ladies’ club, and sang at the grand opening of a greenhouse. The Freshmen Chorus consisted of a few dedicated musicians, 11 to be exact. It is often the “bank” of the school, providing funds to help improve other organizations—such as the music department and the football team. And for “dinning pleasure”, Student Council has provided the soda and candy machines. Student Council keeps in touch with the Board Members and the Superintendent, too, making suggestions for improvement to help keep the school Top Notch. Sometimes Student Council initiates some interesting ideas. It set up a refreshment stand at the sporting events. All that great food and drink were really appreciated by avid sports fans. And this year at Christmas some loyal students battled the icy rains of December to find and decorate a giant Christmas tree for the north courtyard. The spirit that went into this and all other activities is what Student Council is all about. Julie Metal braves the elements to decorate the tree. Mrs. Chris Huston became leader of the group 19 years ago when she started teaching at Watkins High. The group sponsors different fund raisers for various groups in the area and works with other groups nationwide to promote good will and comradeship. The group attends, when funds allow, the Eastern Convention annually at Grossinger’s. They hope to have more members join the State Officer’s Club in the near future. Mrs. Huston also started a group of her own origin in 1976. Nicknamed FLIP, the Family Life Players work with a type of drama called role playing. She started the group when she saw how role playing could be used to bridge the generation gap. Since its “birth”, the group has given presentations for PTA meetings, church groups, mental education programs, and schools in the Southern Tier. Both groups are still going strong, changing and growing with the flow of new students from year to year. Mrs. Chris Huston leads discussion in sociology class. President-elect Dawn VanAmburg and Secretary-Treasurer Carrie Licht are both avid enthusiasts and leaders of the club’s many successful activities held throughout the year. Beginning in January, the club participates with Greek Peak in an eight week evening program. offering lessons, lifts, rentals, and transportation for a rate of $16.00 per night for five hours of skiing. Old Man Winter provided better ski conditions this past season. The club members experienced the spills and thrills of downhill. Some members took their lumps on the head. To climax the season, the club makes possible for its skiers to try out their downhill skills at Stowe, Vermont, the ski capital of the East. Through dances and fund raisers, the students are able to elect this once-in-a-lifetime experience for the entire March weekend. Previous years’ groups have gone to Pico and Lake Placid for this ski weekend. These lifetime experiences offer both social and educational growth for the students, giving to them one more golden opportunity at W.G.H.S. To have credit one must have spirit, and the juniors have both. Their spirit was culminated in one and only one class float, “Mow Down Moravia.” Even though it placed second, it was better than the two from their sophomore year. The juniors increased considerably their class treasury by sponsoring the most profitable class dance in September. They revived and revised the once sophomore carnival and sponsored three dances to boost the central treasury. The junior year is the first year for most students to start earning credit. In the fall, the juniors sold Christmas candles, earning $3000 of individual credit. During February the class sponsored the traditional record, tape, and cassette sale. Before the senior play, the juniors bustled to sell ads, earning 20% of the sales. Then during the play, they ushered and sold tickets and refreshments. The culmination of the junior class’s efforts was the preparation and decoration for the prom. The Class of ’85 had a profitable, growing, and together year. The sophomores encountered and overcame many obstacles to build their float, the structures that would not stand, the wind that nearly blew away their efforts, the visitors that spied on their progress. The Class drew strength from many parents, Mrs. Kramer who delivered pizza, the Stamp’s who donated their barn and who drove, the Rondinaro’s who have had much practice with class projects. At the judging stand, the “Seneca Indian” decapitated the “Blue Devil,” loosing balloons to the sky. Even though the float placed third, the sophomores were proud of their efforts. During the year the sophomores sponsored three dances to boost their treasury. They also sold refreshments at three of the nine home basketball games. The big event of the year, sponsored by the sophomores, was a Sports Night held in March. The Sports Night featured the seniors versus the faculty in some conventional and some not so conventional games. The competition involved one on one challenges and organized games. Some spectacular events were riding a scooter and shooting a basket from the scooter; an obstacle course; hopping in a sack and making a basket; miniature golf; and volleyball. This evening was an innovation of the Class and Mrs. Brown because the class was one of the off year classes; it would not benefit from the donkey basketball. The sophomores, however, padded their treasury to compensate for their off year standing and learned more how to work as a class. In September, the class performed its first class activity by electing its first officers. The freshmen quickly assumed their position at a class and started their first class project, the freshmen float. Unlike floats of prior freshmen classes, the float of the Class of 1987 was accomplished. Their float, “Blast Off”, was destroyed purposely during a show of firecrackers and balloons at halftime. Although the float placed fourth, the freshmen showed to the school that they were a together class. The second order of business for the freshmen was to start their treasury. They manned the refreshment stand at three of the nine home basketball games. In January the freshmen sponsored their first class dance and then later held a second one. The Class of 1987 was on its way to the senior year. The freshmen overcame many hurdles from September to June as they acclimated to the high school and their new status as a class. It was a young, tough team led by co-captains Jim Combs, Kent Duane, and Tom Augustine. The team was one of the most physically defensive teams in recent years which earned them the nickname of the “Mules.” The team was a proud, disciplined group that enjoyed success and can optimistically look to a bright future. Who will ever forget the Homecoming game when the Senecas shut out the Moravia Blue Devils, or that certain Odessa game? Although Watkins lost the bucket, all know who won. Those selected to Lakes Region and I.A.C. All-Stars were: Jim Combs, most valuable defensive player; Kent Duane, most valuable lineman; and Adam Marciniak, most valuable offensive player. All members, however, put forth their best effort to win the pride of their spectators. All in a Nights Work Winning 71 sive play as Quarterback Matt Stansfield (9) and Statistician Sue Stocum await. The Wild Bunch The Watkins Glen Junior Varsity football team was made up of 36 young, enthusiastic players. They ended with a winning season of 5-3. In the three games that they were defeated, it was only by one touchdown. The loss against Dundee was unfortunate as it was an unexpected surprise. Since the other League schools have no JV teams, we played four teams twice. This caused an irregular schedule. At Moravia the referees arrived late so the W.G. players and cheerleaders switched roles to prepare for the game, no use having all that energy going to waste. Prospects for next year's season are positive as many starters of this year's team will return as sophomores. However, one-half of the team will be lost to Varsity in 1984. J. V. The pre-season outlook was optimistic. Watkins had good depth and experienced players, but the team, strong at the beginning, became inconsistent game to game. Watkins did not receive many breaks and did not take advantage of available opportunities during playing time. The team suffered three heartbreaking losses at mid-season, one of which was a double overtime loss to Dryden at the buzzer. Because of the depth, however, most players saw action which will build a better team for next year. Leading Watkins in many facets of play was Ken Depew who was the team’s center and high scorer and high rebounder. Bill Pierce, point guard, excelled in stealing the ball. Jim Combs became the best defensive player. Rex Youmans hustled every minute of playing time. The most improved player was Marvin Densmore, his first year on the court. Bill Pierce moves easily around the Dryden player. Basketball team had a very successful season. The team was lead by captains Matt Stansfield and Steve Schouten and first year coach Scott Harlow. They began the season with seven consecutive victories before losing to Dry-den by a single point while their only other loss was a 2 pt. heartbreaker at Odessa. They were also Co-Champions of the Trumansburg Christmas Tournament, sharing that victory with Ithaca High. With only four players returning from the previous year’s squad, the J.V. team performed extremely well. Sophomore forward Matt Stansfield paced the team with a 17 pt. game average, while sophomore cen- ter Steve Schouten contributed nicely with a 13 rebound game average. Their contributions were supported by the efforts of returning guard Joey Gibbons. The team achieved its winning season by long, hard hours of practice and an original pick and roll play of Coach Harlow. Steve Schouten. Mike Minichiello, Matt Stansfield. Sue Stocum and Pam Sears led in rebounds. Connie Callanan, Alisa Spaulding, and Stacey Lane paced their team as point guards. Marja Savino aided Coach Tobia as statistician. Diane Hughey, the sole senior and co-captain, highlighted the season by scoring for the opponents, T-burg. Reportedly, she made the best lay-up ever while her fellow players screamed. At home the Varsity girls sported new white jerseys with maroon ad blue trim. Because the team competed against more experienced, taller teams, the girls delighted in just being ahead furing a game. This year, however, girl’s basketball started a building program. Miss Gail SMith coached a seven-member J. V. team, the majority of which were eighth graders. Marjorie Dinkins was captain. Captains Ed Ailing, Jeff Gapp, Joe Scaptura, and Chris Wickham also helped to keep the team in line by showing who is boss in some rough water polo games. Of course, “the” highlight of the season was beating the Odessa team. The meet looked close for a while, but the Senecas, with the support of the cheerleaders, rallied to show who was the best. Another high point of the season was Jeff Gapp breaking his own 200 free record. Watkins was the largest team in the I.A.C. which afforded it the needed depth to remain undefeated. Congratulations to the senior swimmers on four outstanding years. Mark Frost Takedown The wrestling Senecas, coached by Jeff Wheeler, ended their season this year with a 9-4 record. Unexpected victories were over Corning West and Waverly. This year our wrestlers did extremely well in tournaments. Six placed at Hammondsport and six at the EFA Christmas Tournament. At our own 2nd Annual Watkins Glen Invitational, there were three first place winners. They were Andy Stansfield (145 lbs.) and Rick Connelly (155 lbs.), both senior wrestlers and junior Adam Marciniak, at 167 lbs. Also two other Watkins wrestlers placed. Overall Watkins placed 5th competing with seventeen other teams. This year’s most outstanding wrestler at the Tournament was Andy Stansfield. Wrestlers who were unde- feated in dual matches this year were Rick Connelly and Adam Marciniak. Senior wrestlers Rick Connelly and Andy Stansfield both have been wrestling since 7th grade. Each has devoted numerous hours of their time practicing. This year it finally paid off; both have placed first in several tournaments and have excellent overall records. The crowning of Homecoming Queen took place that night during halftime. The nominees for Homecoming Queen were Amy Cole, Margaret Franzese, Patty Koch, Tracy Naylor, and Starlett Taylor. Their escorts were Kent Duane, Tim Rodabaugh, John Melveney, Brud Holland, and Joe Scaptura respectively. This year’s Homecoming Queen was Patty Koch. Patty received a necklace and corsage, and then Coach Wheeler crowned her and gave her a half dozen of roses and a trophy. The Queen’s Court received a necklace, corsage, and a rose. During halftime, another exciting event took place. The four classes participated in a float competition. The Senior Class finally pulled together and won. They had a float entitled “The Devilish Boom” which contained a devil in a cannon which was shot through the fiery gates of hell. The second place winner was the Junior Class with the “Seneca machine” devouring the Moravia Blue Devils. Third place was given to the Sophomore Class with its depiction of the Seneca Indian decapitating the Blue Devil with a single arrow. In fourth place was the enormous music box of the Freshman Class which expelled the Blue Devils from its confines. The Queen, the Court, and their Escorts: Amy Cole, Kent Duane. Margaret Franzese. This year we have two new teachers who share a common trait: they are world travelers. These teachers are Mr. Ian Pitcairn and Mr. Scott Harlow. Mr. Pitcairn and his family are from Linlithgow, Scotland. Mr. Pitcairn teaches high school math in Southqueensferry about 12 miles from Linlithgow. The exchange with the Herforth’s was made through the Fulbright Teachers Exchange Organization. The Pitcairn’s enjoy staying in America, although they miss many customs in Scotland. They find life here challenging and demanding but very rewarding. Mr. Harlow has traveled much within the past years. In his last year of college he went to India to be a financial analyst. When he returned to the United States, he joined the Peace Corp. Mr. Harlow then went to Liberia, a Negroid republic. After a three-month training period, he worked in agriculture and nutrition. Because of a military coup, he was forced to leave or become a teacher. He decided to become a teacher. He taught for a couple of years and then traveled Eurpoe for six months. After returning to the United States, he obtained his position at Watkins Glen. 100 To Sir With Love Fantastic Voyage Reetha Shumway, Carol Kunz-mann, Beth Malloy. Emma Smith. It is with great relief, but also with great satisfaction that we have finished the endless layouts, pictures, articles, captions, and deadlines. Our two new advisors, Mrs. Loughlin and Miss Smith, have been super. Their help and time have been so much appreciated. In the movies, action is more important than words. Such is the case with our yearbook. Now the lights have dimmed, the cameras cease to roll, and the action is cut. There is no need for more words. Our yearbook has come to a close. 104 Closing The Last Hurrah Here is the newly elected House of Representatives. Abbey. Jean M. BOCES— Data Processing. Gris' Basketball 2. Softball 1. 2.3.4.
