The Watkins Glen graduating class of 1969 is gathering at the Onyx Club for its tenth reunion. A very exciting race is underway with ROBBIE ARGETSINGER and DICK MORRILL battling it out for the lead and BOB GIAMBO of the Valiant team bringing up the rear. It seems Bob loses a lot of time in his pit stops, despite the efficiency of his pit crew, STANLEY MOLL and KEN EARLEY. All aroupd the track trucks of Belly Beer can be seen. JOHN BELL has become a tycoon from his distillery, and ALYCE RICHARDSON and FRED TUCKER are his main distributors on the track. Patrolman GARY HENDERSON is up on track duty - off his usual Friday night beat at Central Asphalt. He reports in regularly to Sheriff THERESA DEAN. Down by the Wedgewood Road, there's ANITA MARTIN, still selling programs. And over by the refreshment stand we see that ROD PERSONIUS is still playing Mr. Cool as he's graduated from his scooter to a Good Humor wagon. TERRY SLICER is soul - owner of the Chicane. Although this isn't his type of racing, there sits the King of superstockers, BOB CHAPMAN, with his hot V-2 Plymouth. BETTY ELKINS and JUDY GROVER are still trying to convert the Grand Prix to horse racing. As we enter the Onyx Club, here’s TERRI FUNK handing out samples, of her father's wine. And. great Scot, there's LOIS HARVEY! Over at the bar, CHUCK WESTERVELT is head bartender, with JANE DURLAND handling the ice machine. CATHIE SINGLETON has a monopoly on the Onyx Club line to Montour. RONNY ELLIOTT is operating a baby-sitting service in the back room for any interested young ladies. And, over in the corner, there's DANNY O'NEIL, still debating with Mr. Salmirs on the profound philosophies of life. On the roof of the Onyx Club there are countless binoculars watching the race, but there's one pointed to the sky ... GEORGE KLOPPEL, watching birds. Standing beside him, sharing his interests, is STEVE MIKEL (who specializes in Martins). Suddenly they are diverted by a strange and deceptive sound from below, identified as Larr, or LARRY HENDRICKSON. As we mingle with the crowd in the Club, we learn what the classmates of 1969 have done with these past ten years. KEN JACKSON has been Head Gardener at GARY WESTERVELT'S estate, Charm Farm. JOYCE JOHNSON is head maid, cook, bottle-washer ... you name it. And across the road is JANE ELLISON'S Perpetual Party Pad. It was September, 1956, and we were in kindergarten. It was a little scary at first, but this is where you first met the friends that would be with you for the next thirteen years. You were starting together on a trip that would be a whole way of life for you. Do you remember the cots we slept .on at nap time, and the big sandbox that was really a tire? First grade introduced us to the joy of learning - the first faltering steps at reading and writing. In second grade we learned to spell; we read story books; Do you remember show and tell?ff Third grade found many of us in Brownies and Cub Scouts. We learned to write and we were so anxious and proud on Parents’ Night. Do you remember when Mrs. LeShure's class did a skit about Hawaii? In fourth grade we stepped up to the second floor; we had separate reading classes and went to the library to read Dr. Seuss and learn about the Dewey Decimal System. In fifth grade we had our first dance: do you remember doing the twist with Mr. Galatis? Then we were sixth-graders - the Kings of the Cafeteria. We learned about Australia and we studied fractions. But those were just the beginning years, the years in which we formed personalities and made friends. When we left sixth grade we thought we were prepared, but we weren't. We entered the 7th grade September, 1963. This is where we were first referred to collectively as a class. We were known as The seventh-graders. We went through what all 7th graders do: getting usea to the pushing and shoving in the halls instead of neat single-file lines, looking with awe at the Seniors who seemed so old somehow, Mr. Slater's History class, ana our own basketball team. In 8th grade, we participated in Jr. High Student Council, we held a dance, we looked forward to the day when we would leave Junior High. And one day we did. We left the sheltered school life behind us and entered the high school. As Freshmen, our class officers were Eric Claire, Rocky Teetor, Debbie Conkright and Barbara Flahive. Mike Learn was Student Council Treasurer. At last we had a name and we were taking part in school activities, including sports. Who can forget our great J.V. Basketball team? Our battle cry was, Wait until next year! Our Freshman Dance was highlighted with guest appearances made by Captain Crunch and Magnolia Bulkhead (we were original, all right). We joined clubs, had our first tangle with Regents exams, became cheerleaders and athletes. Sophomores now, and fully established citizens of the high school, we broke records and gained fame. We met the teachers our older brothers and sisters had warned us about and found that they were actually human beinjp. Many enjoyed their first Prom that year. Our Sadie Hawkins dance had unprecedented attendance and profit records. And who can forget the Sophomore Carnival or the great side show attraction supplied by strippers Bill Field, Frank Leonard and Jack Hoose. Our class officers that year were Mike Learn, Mary Ann Biagetti, Cim Warner and Barb Flahive. Marcia Ward was Student Council Secretary. The Alumni Banquet provided a little work for us; the school now looked to our class for strength in sports. It was a year of fun ana a year of class triumphs. Then we were Juniors - the last year as carefree underclassmen. Our Junior Class officers were: Jimmy Nitche, Charlie Brown, Jane Durlana and Barb Flahive. Cim Warner was Student Council Vice-President. It was a year filled with new experiences: our first competitive exams, the PSAT’s and SAT's, our long-awaited class rings, selling programs, and simply getting used to the idea that we were Juniors. We saw our boys up there playing varsity sports. And then there was our Junior Prom, Oriental Sunset! ” Many hours went into planning and decorating until it was perfect, and finally, we arrived, excited and nervous, to enjoy our own Prom and to congratulate our King and Queen, Mike Learn and Diann Semski. That year seemed to go in a whirl; it passed so quickly. And finally, unbelievably; we were Seniors. This was the year we went through all the experiences that traditionally belong to the Seniors. As we walked down the halls the first day of school we wondered if the 7th graders were looking up to us the way we looked up to the Seniors all those years ago. Our officers were Mike Learn, Charlie Brown, Jane Durland and Barb Flahive, and Eric Claire was Student Council President. After a traditional attack of Senioritis, we were off and running to live up to our ideas of Senior life. There was our Senior Trip to Washington - we came, we saw, we conquered! All the time we were wondering how old W. G. C.S. was doing without our guiding light. We met our Argentinean friend, Susana Raimondi. She lost her label of Foreign Exchange Student, and we came to know her as a real person. And then there was Frosh Initiation when we lorded it over those poor, unsuspecting Freshmen. We won the Bucket Game, but of course we knew we would - we had to, because it was our last year and everything had to be right! 1 6 The year passed - Senior play. Senior Prom, sports from basketball to track to tennis and wrestling. Our new teachers and new experiences brought many remarks. Let them worry about it; we won't be here next year anyway!! or He marks so hard! Gradually, the novelty of being a Senior wore off, but in the back of our minds we knew that graduation was approaching - the day when we would leave the way of existence we had known all our lives. Now we realize that actually we are just a brief second in passing, a fleeting moment of memories. Ten years from now the Class of 69 will be gone and forgotten. We've left our impression; we've had our fun. But just turn around and ... we're gone.
