1965 SEN EC AN . Watkins Glen Central High School . . . Watkins Glen. New York Brief fleeting moments . . . more precious than jewels . . . MEMORIAM The day has come: she's gone, no longer will her footsteps Leave their lapping echo in the halls of our Alma Mater. Gone is the ringing laughter that tumbled from her smiling lips. When she came, she brought so much with her. When she went away she left even more with us. She was a teacher. No, she was more than a teacher; she was a friend. In her way, she could warm the coldest heart With her love of life. Never a day went by without her friendly hello. Now her last good-bye has been said. But the memories remain-fond, happy memories, No, she is still alive, she lives in our hearts. She is not dead—for someone who is loved, Never can die. by Julia Moat NANCY MERRILL « 2 NAOMI ROBERTS JUNIOR CLASS ADVISOR DEDICA T ON . . . always ready to listen . . . willing to sacrifice her time . . . friendly warmth . . . smile for everyone . . . We shall no cease from exploration and the end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we started and know the place for the first time. Through the unknown, remembered gate when the last of earth left to discover is that which was the beginning.” -T.S. Eliot CLASS SONG by A.J. Schimizzi Jim Whiting Look out, future. Turn about, future. We’re gonna shove our talent in your mout'. We mean to aim, future, For that flame, future. That lets us see the way to win life's endless bout. Here we come, fortune. We ain't dumb, fortune. With brain and brawn we'll conquer every shore, what's more. We'll reach our goal, fellas. We'll raise that high pole, fellas, Where our deeds will fly for evermore. Great success, teachers. What a mess, teachers. To those new seniors never acquiesce. And we know, teachers, It's just so, teachers. That they will never match our holy blessedness. But don't weep, Seniors. Let it keep, seniors. You'll do well but never be as great, too late! Angels are us, people. We don't ever cuss, people, Since we wish to show our noble trait. Well surprise, Vroni. Our good-byes, Vroni. By tears our hankies all are shrunk in size. Take your skis, Vroni. Your Swiss cheese, Vroni. We hope all your ambitions you will realize. Don't regret, Vroni. Don't forget, Vroni, All these months you've spent in Watkins Glen, all ten! And tell your dad, Vroni. You're a Watkins grad, Vroni, And that you want to come back soon again. Your brick face, Watkins, Has such grace, Watkins, A warmth our memory always will always embrace. It makes us grieve, Watkins. We must leave, Watkins. But in our hearts you'll always hold a special place. And then so, students, As we go, students, With mixed emotions we must bid adieu, to you. Good times and bad, Watkins, Best we've ever had, Watkins. And so shoves off this hale and hearty crew. I ■ «■ CLASS HISTORY by Pat Bale Hand In hand they mounted the steps. •Be quiet now--sshh, whisper—and don't let that door slam, It always bangs. From room to room they went, hand In hand, searching, looking, listening,—making sure. Here we left them, she said, in this room. And here, he said, in this hall, especially in this hall. Searching. Looking. Listening. “I hear them, she said. Do you hear them too? Do you remember? The applause in the auditorium died down as the curtain opened on yet another senior play. There we were, sitting where the Freshmen sit, in the very back, straining to see. We were laughing, everyone was laughing. But, then, we were crying, everyone was crying. Why were there tears? Did we lose something? Did we leave someone behind? “Here we left them, she said, in this room. “And here, he said, in this hall, especially in this hall. Do you reme..iber? Sliver stars shone down on dancing couples and a big yellow moon swung over a throne. Only long hours filled with crepe paper, glue, silver glitter, and anticipation could have transformed the gym for a few magic hours before corsages wilted and long dresses were packed away. Do you remember? The grass was wet and the air, chilly. 5:00 a.m. at the race course seemed such a long way from our goal. But, there we were, resting on a pile of programs, eating raw hot dogs and dust. “Oh here comes the school bus—thank God, my feet are Just killing me! Can you give me ten dollars in change? “What'd you mean, get back out there and sell? I've already been out there since five this morn. . . Oh, Grand Prix program? Yes sir, fifty cents, sir. The senior class is going to Washington next year! Ah, here's the picture. There were one hundred and eighteen and there I am in front, see? Just look at the Capitol. It seemed so big; the Monument was so tall; and the Mall so cool to bare feet. •Alright, move along, move along. We haven't got all day! Was that the White House we Just ran through? Smoke bombs, firecrackers, and long bus rides? Do you remember? •We found them, she said, “the last four years, the last year, the last month. Hand in hand they descended the stairs— a ghostly couple, but inside the voices lingered on and the memories of the Class of 1965 will always remain.
