Junior Class The following were elected as Junior Class officers: President. Andrew Chicone: Vice-President, Dorothy Best: Secretary. Margaret Haley: Treasurer. Robert Spencer. Business Manager. Jack Love: Ass’t Business Manager. Laurfcn Richtmyer. This year for the first time in the history of Watkins Glen High School all of the Student Council officers were held by Juniors with Jack Love as President. As a class we were rather successful in our ventures into the heretofore unexplored fields of raising money. The two banquets which we served to the Farm and Home Bureau and the 4-H Club, respectively, gained for us a moderate return as did the cheer books. The famed Junior Pencils and Christmas Wreaths brought splendid results in the way of enlarging our On-to-Washington Fund. The high school auditorium was appropriately and tastefully decorated on the evening of April 22 for the main social event of the Junior year, the annual Junior Prom. Johnny Schwab furnished the music, and the dance was pronounced a success. We wish to express our appreciation to all those who have aided the Class of ’39 in any way and especially to our Class Adviser. Mr. Davis. 22 19 3 8 THE ORACLE 19 3 8 FIRST ROW: Rhynhart. Woodward. In addition to its other achievements, the Sophomore Class has added bowling to its list of sports, and many members participated in basketball, baseball and football. Our Sophomore Hop. held November 1 2th. was acknowledged by everyone to have been a success, both socially and financially. This was due in all probability, to the hard work of Mr. Timms and the Class. We wish to express our thanks and gratitude to Mr. Timms for his patience. tact and helpfullness the past year. 23 19 3 8 THE ORACLE 19 3 8 FIRST ROW: Stevens. Smith. Sweet. Fordham. Wager. Howell. Dear Alma Mater: In the latter part of September, the Freshman Class was organized and the following officers were elected: John Richardson. President: Walter Smith. Vice-President: Clyde Weed. Secretary: Betty Jean Wright. Treasurer: Barbara Sebring. Business Manager: Vito DelRosso. Ass’t Business Manager and Mr. Richard Walsh. Class Adviser. At one of their meetings, they decided to have representative government. In each home room two representatives were chosen. These representatives with the officers made up our government. This new idea in class government proved very satisfactory. On June 17. 1938, the Freshman Class is going to hold a Field Day. They look forward to seeing you all there. This class will be with you again next year as the Sophomore class. Sincerely yours. The Freshmen. 24 19 3 8 THE ORACLE 19 3 8 25 19 3 8 THE ORACLE 19 3 8 The Senior Year The first important event of the year was the Election Day dinner. The efforts of the chairman and her helpers were well rewarded by the success of the dinner. Incidentally, more than one member of the class became the master of such hitherto unknown culinary arts as peeling potatoes and cutting squash. The Senior Ball was also very successful, both socially and financially. Decorations of evergreens and colored lights lent a festive note to the scene as dancers swayed to the tuneful rhythm of Johnny Anz and his orchestra. The Senior Play. Don't Ever Grow Up. was a clever comedy depicting a typical American family. A large audience was in attendance at both presentations, and many favorable compliments on the choice of the play, the quality of the acting, and the financial returns, were received. In the meantitme the school year was rapidly passing by. Mark was having his finger-waves: Hubie kept forgetting to do his English: Bell was watching his nichols: Hebe was getting her own way in English class: Woody. Yoty and Sling were harmonizing on the “old favorites”: the letters. C. C. C.P.. made their appearance on select sweaters: and Mr. Perry tried in vain to keep order in the study hall. At last the long-awaited Faster vacation arrived and we went on that glorious never-to-be-forgotten Washington trip, with the largest party in the history of the school. Our days were filled with interesting sight-seeing tours, and we saw many beautiT1 and his'orical p'aces and buildings. The boat trip which was a new and thrilling experience to most of us was greatly enhanced for some by the presence of the Class from Perry. After a wearisome train ride home, our chaperons, with a sigh of relief, delivered us into the care of loving parents and friends who waited at the station. Three major events of the year still belong to the future — Class Day. the Senior Picnic and Commencement. At present we are cramming for. and worring about, the Regents exams. After exams comes that momentous day which we have anticipated so long, but which we now regret to see so near at hand — Commencement Day. when we will receive our diplomas and bid a fond farewell to Watkins Glen High School. Each unit is a definite organization with a faculty member in control and with office£s elected from the student body. Service points are allowed for participation in the various activities and service pins awarded to those who have received the required number of service points. The leading service club is the Student Council, the offices of which are among the most coveted honors in the high school. This year, for the first time, the officers were all members of the Junior Class. Under the leadership of President Jack Love, the Council supervised general conduct in the school, tried and punished offenders, aided in preparing assemblies and other programs, and awarded the service pins. Several special committees have been doing very satisfactory work throughout the year. The attendance data have been collected and recorded daily by Queene Moscon and Josephine Barile. Confusion, disorder, and congestion in the halls have been greatly reduced by the Monitors Committee. Jed by Head Monitor Edwin Barkman. Under head ushers Hebe Parks and Mina Curry systematic order has been developed in the auditorium during assembly programs. Specially appointed students, who have done commendable work are Frank Gavin, in charge of banking, and Mina Curry, assistant to the faculty athletic adviser. The most extensive work is embodied in the various clubs and organizations. Newly formed this year is the Music Club, with Dorothy Best as president. Lauren Richtmyer and William James won solo awards at Endicott entitling them to enter the State contest at Jamestown. Under the leadership of President Jack Withiam. the Poster Club has been very active this year, willingly furnishing fine posters to satisfy all requests. In the Rotary Hobby Fair John Wait. Owen Cassidy and Stanley Rundle respectively won first, second and third prizes with their poster entries. The Science Club is composed chiefly of the Freshman students of General Science. Barbara Kiermaier and Jane Fillman are presidents of this club, which studies current developments in science through papers and discussions. Members of the Agriculture Club, of which Roger Ganung is president, entered judging contests at Ithaca and the New York State Fair. Roger Ganung, Horace Webster and Robert Teed won honorary awards at Ludlowville. The Homemaking Club, with Josephine Barile as president, has served several lunches besides holding bake sales during the year. In the National Homemaking Contest, Ida Voorheis received an honorable mention award. The leading extra-curricular activity, athletics, is included in the service organizations by the award of a service point to each member of a high school athletic squad. Nick LaPre led the football team, which had the honor of placing Andrew Chicone. Watkins left guard, on the coaches All-Conference Team. In basketball. Watkins Glen placed Jack Knapp, captain of the team, and William Tillman on the second All-League Team. William Bell managed the tennis team, hampered by weather and poor courts. Lanky Charles Stevens had the honor of pitching a no-hit league game for the baseball team, captained by Linford Freese. Among other honors during the year were those won at the Commercial Sectional Meet in which individual honors were won by Rhoda Smith in typing, Emiline Shepherd in bookkeeping and Lola Crego in economics, while 29 19 3 8 THE ORACLE 19 3 8 the typing, commercial arithmetic and economics teams won first places. A group of high school students, showing fine training, skill, and precision, gave a physical education exhibition, in which Charles Jackson and Marlea Knapp were outstanding. A new Watkins Glen high jump mark of 5’ 8 ' was set by Donald Graham. Scholastically, service points are awarded to students on the honor roll for all four quarters. This year about fifteen per cent of the students received this award. In Senior High School the boys walked off with the honors; William James being valedictorian and Edwin Barkman. Salutatoria'n. In Junior High, however, the girls came through, with Mary Valeant as valedictorian and Esther Freudenheim as salutatorian. These service activities are of inestimable value to the school in the varied extra-curricular activities offered the students, the continual development of new organizations (such as the Dramatic Club now being contemplated), and the great interest in the activities shown by the students. This year service pin awards have been earned by twenty Seniors and four Juniors. Epilogue I his edition of the Oracle is one of many innovations and departures from the traditional type. We have tried to combine these new ideas and produce a year book that will please everyone. Aided by unusally good cooperation on the part of the staff, we have had little difficulty in organizing our material. In the 1938 Oracle” we have tried to portray that which symbolizes the spirit of Watkins Glen High School. Our only hope is that we have succeeded. You, the readers, are the judges and may your decision be a favorable one! 36 THE STAFF.
