Blake the Watkins Glen High School football team reached a higher degree of success than was expected this year. Due to the loss of so many of its veterans by graduation, expectations were not high. At the beginning of the season Clyde Granston because of his outstanding athletic ability was elected captain. It is to Captain Granston that the honors of high score was given as he was the only member of the 1934 squad to cross the goal line. Of the seven game schedule played by the High School squad there were three victories and the remaining four were losses, thus putting the squad back to third place in the Central Interscholastic League of which the High School has been a member for the past four years. The varsity squad was made up of Captain Clyde Granston, senior; Charles VanAmburg, senior; James Berry, senior; William De Samo senior; Aldo Ballygotti, junior; Robert Montjoy, junior; Alvin Spader Post graduate; Ubaldo Sabatino, junior; Raymond Churcher, sophomore; Carmen Salvatore, junior; Llewelyn Evans, junior; Aldo Bally-gotti, sophomore; John Skinner, junior; James Nitche, senior. The reserve squad was made up of Augustine Paradiso, sophomore; Rocco Macri, sophomore; Robert Knapp, junior; William Knapp, sophomore; Justine Love, sophomore; James Adesso, freshman. Boys’ Basketball The basketball season started off successfully this year when the Watkins boys defeated first Painted Post and then Starkey. The team journeyed to Elmira Reformatory for two very fast and exciting games with the reformatory lads. In each of these games the team was defeated by a mere two point margin. A game of exceptional excitement and interest was that played at Horseheads. Everybody was on his feet when, at the end of the fourth quarter, the score was a tie 14-14 An extra quarter was played and Clyde Granston, amid much shouting and cheering, shot the winning basket. The last league game, which was played with Johnson City led 8-2 at the half and, although the Watkins team fought with all their strength, at the end of the third quarter Johnson City still was aimed towards almost certain victory 11-8. During the last quarter the local boys put their whole spirit into the game and, gaining the lead at the last minute, won the game. The Watkins boys proudly boast the fact that they were the only team in the league to defeat Johnson City this season. The local bovs, winning five games and losing five, finished in third place. Captain Granston, who held 59 points, earned fourth place in the high scoring honors. 26 The girls were badly handicapped this year as those who were interested had to ask permission to organize a team and little practice took place until this was accomplished. The first game, which our girls lost, had been preceded by hardly a week’s practice. Although they worked their hardest the girls were only able to emerge Victorians from one game—the alumnae. The Montour game, which was held on the home court, proved to be one of the most interesting of the season. Our girls kept the lead until the last quarter when, the Montour girls began to pick up and a basket made at the last minute made the final score a tie 14-14. After nearly defeating such a good team; the girls were spurred on to play three games with Burdett, which proved to be unusually exciting. Baseball When Coach Blake called for baseball men this year, there were thirty in all who reported. “Bus” Davis, one of these thirty, was elected captain. The practice, which was delayed due to the cold and rainy weather, started April 8th. Since several games were cut, the season was much shorter this year than usual. 27 Senior Play Cast t • BACK ROW—Parks, Wi tihiam, Stamp, Stone, Boyd, Granstom.
