Glen High Echo When it was announced at the beginning of the year that the Seniors were to publish a year book instead of the Pepper Pot.” the Post Graduate class decided to print a bi-weekly paper to supplement the year book. After much consideration it was named the “Glen High Echo.” Each issue contained four pages and was sold for two cents. The staff including editors, typists and printers consisted entirely of P. G's. Each issue was divided between class news, school events, athletics and scandal. Through this medium more enthusiasm for athletics was created since schedules and lineups were printed before the games and full accounts of them afterwards. The scandal sheet, an entirely new feature, soon became, with the students at least, the most popular page. Just before election a presidential straw vote was conducted in the Echo. Contrary to public vote, Hoover was elected. Later a popularity contest was held for boys and girls. At the close of the basketball season, a special issue was printed which contained a summary of the season's achievements. Five dollars of the proceeds from the sale of the paper was given to the Welfare Fund, at Christmas. The remaining twenty-five dollars was given to the Senior Class for the Washington Trip Fund. 17 19 3 3 THE ORACLE 19 3 3 BACK ROW—Spcnccr, Munson (class advisor). Wood, Shelansky. Hughey. Hunt. Wilma Jean Leonard: Treasurer. Jack Waters; Business Manager, Fred Sebring: Class Teacher. Mrs. Frank Cole. This year the Juniors organized soon after school started. They elected the following class officers: President, Philip Walsh: Vice-President, Lucy Sciore: Secretary. Wilma Jean Leonard: Treasurer. Jack Waters: Business Manager. Fred Sebring: Class Teacher. Mr. Munson. Soon after school started we began selling Junior Pencils. During the Christmas holidays we were very successful selling holly wreaths. On the Student Council the Junior Class is well represented by the following: Betty Hunt Cleveland. Vice-President: Fred Hunt, Secretary: and Philip Walsh. Sergeant-at-Arms. The Juniors served delicious dinners to the members and guests of the Band Festival. The last activity of the Juniors, the Junior Prom, was a social as well as a financial success. Many attended and all reported a fine time. The Seneca Ripples, the local and very popular dance band, furnished the music. 18 19 3 3 THE ORACLE BACK ROW—Skinner. Irish. Drake. Wiihiam. Borri. Mason. Sophomore Class This year the Sophomore Class has tried to do its part in cooperating with the other classes in all school activities. At our first class meeting, which was held early in September, we selected Miss Flagler as our Class Advisor and elected the following students to class offices: President. Richard Personius; Vice-President. Neal Stamp; Secretary, Ruth Hope: Treasurer, Delvin Skinner: and Business Manager. Burr Stone. The first class social event enjoyed by the class this year was a Hallowe'en Party, which was held at the County Line Grange Hall. This party was attended by a large portion of the class, and was greatly enjoyed by all who were present. The Sophomore Hop, which was held April 7, was enjoyed very much by the comparatively large crowd attending. The music for this occasion was furnished by Bill Harvey's orchestra, accompaied by several special features. We are all looking forward to the class picnic at Enfield Glen, which will bring the social season of the class to a happy ending. The Sophomore Class boasts of several members who are making good in the athletic department. On the football squad we were represented by the following boys: Clyde Granston. Louis Nitche. James Nitche, Joseph Hughey, William DeSarno, and Jack Irish. On the basketball team we were represented by Clyde Granston, however, several others went out and did their best. A large number of Sophomores are also reporting for baseball and track. 19 ACTIVITIES 1 9 3 3 — THE ORACLE — 1933 Sportmanship Brotherhood Charles Andrew Ruth Hope Ernestine Arcangeli Stanley Huey Paul Churcher Alice Jackson Charles Davis Walter Johnson Charles Decker Lewellyn Kenyon Stuart Dickson Marie McKenna Mortimer Durland Ann Moran Jean Egan Betty Morris Helen Fordam Joseph Paradiso Henry Fraboni Mary Robinson Joseph Fraboni Abraham Freudenheim Oliver Spaulding Clyde Granston Charles Stamp Raymond Granston Anna Viglione Marilyn Hager Elizabeth Walsh Genevieve Haughey Theodore Weed Helen Hicks Cornelia Williams 22 19 3 3 THE ORACLE 19 3 3 BACK ROW—Granston. Betty Morris: Vice-President. Lewellyn Kenyon: Secretary. Fred Hunt: Treasurer, Abraham Freudenheim; Sergcant-at-Arms. Philip Walsh. This meeting resulted in the establishment of a short period during the day for extracurricular activities. After a trial of a few weeks, this plan was found unsatisfactory and therefore abandoned. Also at this meeting an Athletic Commission was started. A corridor patrol was formed and this has been most successful throughout the year. It was the Student Council that decided upon the issuing of a year book instead of the Pepper Pot. This organization also gained from our principal the permission to have an Athletic Banquet. The Student Council throughout the first half year devoted its energies toward the welfare of the students and the government of the school. During the second half the Student Counncil was under the charge of the following officers: President. Joseph Fraboni: Vice-President. Betty Hunt Cleveland: Secretary. Fred Hunt; Treasurer, Fred Sebring: Sergeant-at-Arms. Philip Walsh. The first action taken by the body was the changing of the controlling members of the Athletic Commission. This caused school-wide interest. Throughout the year the hall monitors reported students for misconduct in the halls. These were brought before the Student Council and given fair trail. Suitable punishments were imposed and enforced. The work that was done by the members of the Student Council during the Music Festival was splendid. Thus it is evident that the Student Council is of the greatest value, and should be upheld by the entire student body as a means of governing themselves successfully. 23 19 3 3 THE ORACLE 19 3 3 Y BACK ROW—Churchcr. Football With the end of the 1932 football season, the second year in which football had been played at Watkins Glen was brought to a close. The season may be called successful even though the high school lost the final game in the playoff for the championship to Elmira Heights. Of the five league games played, one was tied, three were won and one was lost. Of the three non-league games played, one was won. one was tied and one was lost. The league consisted of five teams: Horseheads. Elmira Heights. Bath. Penn Yan and Watkins Glen. The winner was to receive a cup donated by the “Elmira Star Gazette. Elmira Heights won the cup. Of the twenty-two games played only three were lost. Two of these were league games and resulted in our losing the Southern Counties League Championship. The team, after beating both Montour Falls and Owego in the league contest, dropped a game to Elmira Heights. Then, after beating Horseheads a game was lost to Johnson City by the narrow margin of one field goal. After this the team came back and succeeded in winning the remainder of the league games. Elmira Heights won the league championship by losing only one game. However, we were still entitled to play in the Class B Sectionals. In the play-off. by beating Moravia. Green and Cooperstown. our team won the Class B championship cup. Of the seven non-league and one post-season games played, we won seven. LEAGUE GAMES SCHEDULE: W. G. Girls Basketball The Girls' Basketball team put up with a somewhat eratic season in 1932-'33. In the first place we were pushed into the background by an outstanding boys' team. Then, with the depression at its lowest level it was considered a step toward economy to do away with the girls’ basketball team. Consequently we were dropped from the league in which we had played the previous year. Possessing some ideas of our own on the matter of basketball for girls and being perhaps a bit stubborn in demanding our rights, we organized our forces and presented an appeal to the Board of Education. That august body listened to our pleas with sympathy and in their weighing of justice, granted us a reasonable appropriation enabling us to play a limited schedule of games. The financial obstacle partially overcome, the rest seemed easy, so our manager. Helen Fordham. went about her duties scheduling the few games. Practices were held daily and finally a team was selected by Miss O'Connor and Mr. Blake. Miss Mary Winifred Love and Miss Katherine Pettingill were loyal to their Alma Mater by offering to help the girls, teaching them new plays. Our record for the seven games played shows two victories and five defeats. Not an impressive record, but still it might have been worse. We opened against Waterloo on our own court and lost to them by a 26-14 score. Penn Yan beat us on their court with a 21-13 count in a hard fought game. Our first victory came in our game with the Alumni, when we turned them back with a 34-25 score. The powerful Cook girls outplayed us and took a 28-10 decision next. Then we avenged ourselves over Penn Yan by gaining a 32-17 victory on our court. Again Cook came through with an 18-16 win on our court and in our final game Waterloo on their court defeated us 27-12. The personnel of the past season's team consisted of: Eunice Mills, center. 1 year: Marie McKenna, side center. 4 years: Doris Sherrer. forward, 2 years: Alice Jackson, forward. 1 year: Teresa Martin, guard. 3 years: Jean Egan, guard. 2 years. 26 19 3 3 THE ORACLE 19 3 3 SEVELLON STUART DICKSON “STU” Basketball (Junior Varsity, 3-4: Varsity, 4-5): Baseball. 4-5: Senior Play, 4; Orchestra: Christmas Play, 3. Possessing some ideas of our own on the matter of basketball for girls and being perhaps a bit stubborn in demanding our rights, we organized our forces and presented an appeal to the Board of Education. 1 hat august body listened to our pleas with sympathy and in their weighing of justice, granted us a reasonable appropriation enabling us to play a limited schedule of games. 4 years: Doris Sherrer. forward. 2 years: Alice Jackson, forward. 1 year: Teresa Martin, guard. 3 years: Jean Egan, guard. 2 years. 26 19 3 3 THE ORACLE 19 3 3 BACK ROW—Coach Blake. During the latter part of April two practice games were played with Cook Academy. The first game was played against Waterloo on the fair grounds. Waterloo was defeated after a very close game by the score of 8-7. The same week two games were lost, one to Ithaca and one to Starkey. The succeeding games were won. making a total of four games won and two lost. This is a good beginning and by the end of the season the team’s record should show a good percentage of games won SCHEDULE: W. G. Track This year the track squad shows evidence of being well balanced and in good shape. So far competition seems a bit stronger but the team has increased in strength accordingly. Most strength is shown in the field events. In the first dual meet of the season the team inflicted a severe beating on the town team. At the En-Joie Invitation meet at Endicott. although Charles Stamp, by winning 1st place in the discus and 2nd in the shot put. was the only team member who placed, other members of the team showed marked improvement. Effort is being made to secure a meet with Geneva. Joseph Fraboni was elected Captain and Duncan Parks is serving as Manager. On May 17. the team went to Penn Yan and won by the score of 4-1. Richard Personius. as manager has secured several tournaments to be played both at home and away. At present tournaments are being arranged with Cook and with Horseheads. A girls’ team was also formed but as yet no tournaments have been secured. Hall. 31 19 3 3 19 3 3 THE ORACLE — Tribute This year we are sorry to lose three popular high school teachers: Miss Harriet O. Ganung, Training Class teacher: Mrs. Winifred Love, music teacher: and Miss Katherine O'Connor, mathematics teacher. With the abolition of Teachers Training Class in New York State. Miss Ganung is definitely retiring from the teaching profession. During her thirty-six years of service she has been a source of inspiration to pupils and friends. To say that her friends include her acquaintances would be a mild tribute to one who has maintained such a high standard of integrity with such kindly sympathy. Miss Ganung began teaching here in 1915. Besides teaching the Training Class she at one time taught drawing and American History in this school. Miss Ganung had little apportunity for a college education, but she has achieved an enviable goal as an educator through her own study. It is with sincere desire for her happiness that her pupils regret the retirement of this truly noble teacher. Mrs. Love possesses certain indefinable qualities that have made her very dear to her pupils. They will miss her next year not only as a teacher but also as a friend. Mrs. Love was born in Watkins Glen and attended high school here. She graduated from the Ithaca Conservatory of Music in 1926 but began teaching in Watkins Glen High School in 1924. She also has taught in Odessa. Montour Falls and Burdett schools. During her nine years in this school. Mrs. Love has accomplished a great deal in the music department and has kindly given her services in numberless musical entertainments. She is particularly alert in recognizing individual talent and has spent much time in developing the talent of certain students. This year her Glee Club gained noteworthy recognition by winning first place in a sectional contest at Groton. Mrs. Love's pupils must adapt themselves to a new instructor.' but their regard for her as a gracious woman can not change. In losing Miss O'Connor, we are losing not only a very popular teacher but also a very good friend. Miss O’Connor received her education in Elmira where she attended St. Mary’s School and graduated from the Southside High School. She obtained her degree from Elmira College in 1930 and came to Watkins Glen High School the following year to teach mathematics. While here she has coached the girls' basketball teams for two years. The friendly smile of Miss O’Connor will be missed next year by both Faculty and students alike. The farewell to the teachers of our school is accompanied by a very deep feeling of regret combined with one of great appreciation for their help and kindness. They have all been true friends in every aspect, and we hope that we will be fortunate enough to have as good teachers in our future work. With our farewell we leave every wish for their merited happiness and good fortune in the future. 32 Alumni Aublc. Anna Fitzgerald. Watkins Glen Andrews. Bess Russel. Edgewater. N.J. Alexander.
