Four Bug Seasons of Musicals 'QA FRESHMAN YEAR 1955-1956 WEARING OF THE GREEN On September l 1955 forty three members slgned contracts and entered the halls of WHS to become the graduates of 1959 This class was gulded by two directors Jos phlne Klefer and Wm Butterworth To get the season off to a flying start Donald Gtlpxn was given the leadlng role with Eddie Bensyl as hls under study For manager Glenn Ewan was appointed to that job with Vlrglnla Schlltz as scribe Our press agent was Norman White Charles Allen served on the Student Cotmcil Other members of our troupe were Wally Anderson audltorlum for our lnltlatlon orders Everyone was glven a llst of clothes to wear and instructed to bring a rake or hoe Costumes were varied some wore long underwear or overalls whlle others wore dresses and bathing sults boys wore high heeled shoes and girls plow shoes every freshman carried a rake or hoe to clean the football field With that chore completed we proceeded to put on an exhibltlon act First we paraded down Mam Street and then put on a show for the entire student body We were now a part of our new school preparing for the future The seniors honored us with a hayrack ride and served refreshments that evening Our actlon for the season included two class partles The flrst act included a plcnlc at the school After a lusclous meal our entire troupe boarded the omnibus and attended a movxe ln St Joseph The second act was a welner roast at Krug Park and a tour of St Jo eph almost everyone attended a movie or went bowling ,V SOPHOMORE YEAR 1956-1957 DREAMING Our second season started with a cast of thlrty seven Harold Simpson Mary Shellenberger Sharon Gilbert Wllbur Callen Douglas Pohl Donald Hanes Max McGuire and James Gladden were all released from their contracts Our two new entertainers were Judy Gibson and Nova Sllvy Our directors for the season were Chrlstena Elliott and Roselyn Nicklaus Donald Gllpln agaxn had the leadlng role with Glenn Ewan as understudy John Schfltz was manager with Virglnla Schlltz as scrlbe Charles Allen served on the Student Council again This year we were able to do a little more entertalnlng Several times we worked ID the concession stand earning extra money for the annual Jumor-Senlor banquet One of our big shows was our first class party A committee elaborately decorated the Clty Hall and a dance was held on Halloween Night Our last performance of the season was our second class party We had a plcmc at the school house and then toured vla bus to Skateland where many of the cast put on exhlbltlve performances which recelx ed lots of pralse As sophomores we needed an emblem of some kind so we 5 This season was packed full of exciting adventures One of the first projects taken up was the ordering of our class rings which arrived November 25 For financial benefit many of us worked ln the concession stand throughout the season On November 26 we presented the biggest show of the year Around the World in Eighty Days The cast included Glenn Ewan Eddie Bensyl Deanna Carnes Wallace Redmond Donald Gilpin Eugene Elder Darlene Hart Rita Thels Millie Prawl Nova Sllvy Norma McVey Ed Shellenberger Eda Hewlns Donna Euler Flora Bruns Wally Anderson John Ramsel Charles Allen Kay Propheter Vlrgxnla and John Schlltz and Joyce Nold Elaine King directed thls famous play We were highly commended for the performance After the play the entire cast crew and directors attended a dance in the study hall Four of our troupe were in the One Act play Fog on the Valley Joyce Nold Eddie Bensyl Wallace Redmond and John Schlltz Next on the agenda were our class partles On our first party we had a plcnlc and then danced at the IOOF Hall Our second party we agaln put on an exhlbltlve show at Skateland On May 3 the juniors took the seniors for a tour of Moon light and Rose at the Hotel Rlobldoux for the annual Junlor Senlor banquet Ll SENIOR YEAR 195s-1959 4' f JOURNEY s END beginning of the season Pat Young Shirley Boeh and Norma Dldlo failed to sign their contracts and Alicia Mlller and Douglas Pohl both slgned one year contracts Josephine Kiefer and Lee Corder were our directors Because of his prestige John Schlltz was again glven the leading role and Joyce Nold played opposite hlm Vlrglnla Schlltz was scribe and Eda Hewlns manager Douglas Pohl was press agent and Eddie Bensyl was our Student Councll representative This year we lnftlatlon orders freshmen came with Llmburger class Following a hayrack ride and a watermelon feed the day ended quite a success Our troupe presented a mystery comedy Three Fingers ln the Door The cast included Don Gllpln Eda Hewlns Nova Sllvy Deanna Carnes Joyce Nold Glenn Ewan Kay Propheter Millie Prawl Virginia and John Schlltz and John Ramsel Josephine Kiefer directed the play Following this performance everyone attended a beautiful dance ln the gymnasium In the One-Act play The HBPDY Journey Vlrglnla Schlltz and John Schlltz had star roles Nova Sllvy was stage manager In order to make money for our grand finale the Senlor trip we used several means to accomplish that purpose We had car washes food sales dances a box supper and skating parties One of the most successful projects was the Christmas Formal Wallace Redmond and Donna Caton were crowned klng and queen Thls year we were guests of the Junlor class at the annual Junlorsenlor banquet 'I'hroughout the four seasons our class has showed outf standing work ln sports muslc dframa spelling and the state ctlltests Alicia Miller was crowned homecoming queen at the turned the tables instead of receiving we gave them out On inltlatlon day the dressed ln gaudy clothes and were greeted cheese onlons and members of the Senlor :Ahoy Wathena football game on October I0 ordered our beautlful class pins Ceremonies held at the end of the season were Baccalaureate JUNIOR YEAR 1957 1958 en SQ 4 MOVE IT OVER Thxrty-eight slgned contracts for the 19571958 season Norman Whxte s contract expired and Donna Caton and Barbara Roark slgned a two-year contract with us Our directors were Lucy Shxfflett and Ella Corder John Schlltz was given the leading role with Don Gilpin as his understudy Kay Propheter played the part of manager and scribe Norma McVey was our press agent Charles Allen served his third consecutive year on Student Council 4,- Servloes May 10 and Class Night May 12 On Commencement Night May 18 thlrty seven members received t.he1r diplomas a oertlflcate authenticating that they had completed their four years of study Then the class trip was made to Colorado- truly an efnJoyable climax to four years of hard work As seniors our entire class worked diligently to publish the 1959 edition of the yearbook The Wildcat The class of 1959 leaves schoolmates and friends regretfully but hope that the coming years will be as interesting and rewarding as the days spent at Watbena High School We have the key to a llfe of happiness and complete
