to Watervliet in September, 1944, as High School Principal and mathematics instructor. While serving in this capacity, he accepted the advisorship of the Senior Class of 1947. Mr Donaldson became superintendent in 1946 when that position was vacated by Mr. Harold Crocker. The Watervliet school system has more than doubled its enrollment since Mr. Donaldson assumed his duties here. In 1946 the registry showed five hundred seventy-one students, in 1959 eleven hundred fifty students were enrolled Under Mr. Donaldson's administration the following current residents of Watervliet have served on the Board of Education: Chester Aspengren, Virginia Besemer, James Colman, Barney Dwiggins, Edith Fox, Mary Hutchins, Fred Johnson, Leonard Krall, Jerome Pitcher, Dr. Joseph Reed, William Rogers, Uyleau Shimer, Earle Smith, Eliot Spreen, and Alden White. At the close of the school year in June, 1960, after thirty-four years of service in public school work, Mr. Donaldson will retire and take up residence in California. There he plans to write some editorials l and a revised Algebra book or spend his leisure time on his numberous hobbies. At the end of a satisfying and salient career in Watervliet, Mr. Donaldson sums up his feelings con- q cerning his life here and his forthcoming retirementp I have enjoyed the sixteen years in the Waterv- liet school system more than any other place I have ever been. I have enjoyed the students here, the Faculties I have worked with, and the community in general. I will always carry with me many fond memories of the years in Watervliet.

MII 443 74 Zum Mr. Elery Donaldson was born February 10, 1895, in Maquon, Illinois. After grad- uating from Maquon High School, he at- f ' tended Lombard College located in Galesburg, Illinois. During his college career he was active in the vocal and instrumental music departments. Mr. Donaldson 's assiduity in the college sports program later led him into the coaching profession. After receiving his undergraduate education at Lombard, Mr. Donaldson studied at the University of Illinois where he earned his Master of Arts degree. With the arrival of World War I, his college education was interrupted for a year and a half while he was with the army in France. Mr. Donaldson holds a teacher's certificate in school administration from the Illinois Department of Public Instruction and from the Michigan Department of Public Instruction. However, wishing to have as wide a scope of knowledge as possible, Mr. Donaldson has solicitously worked on a doctor 's degree and he has completed half the work necessary to acquire one. Before entering the teaching profession, our superintendent served as merchandise manager and assistant manager in the S. S. Kresge Company and in Montgomery Ward and Company.
