SHIRLEY ANN WATSON H' shin Junior Chorus lg Mixed Chorus 2, 3, 4, Prom Committee 3. THOMAS LEE WOOD Tom Football 1, 3, 4, Prom Committee 3. , 1 1 , and gage Slate GIRLS ' STATE The purpose ofwolverine Girls' State is to teach girls the principles of our state govern- ment. Each girl is a citizen of a city, county, and state and may run for any office on the local or state level. There are eighteen cities with twenty girls in each one supervised by a counselor. Highlights of the eight-day program are: State Party Conventions, the Mock Trial, a picnic lunch, a pajama party, inauguration of the Governor, and Hospital tour. Recreational activities included swimming, tennis, or softball. Girls could also participate in a choir or band. My own experience at Girls' State was one whichl will never forget. I made many new friends and came back with a better understanding of our government. I sincerely wish that more girls could have attended. JEAN BANDURSKI-: Boys' STATE Attending Wolverine Boys' State of 1959 was certainly a real privilege for us. The purpose of this week at Boys' State is to give fellows an opportunity to participate in the actual opera- tion of a democratic form of government. Conventions, elections inaugural ceremonies, and a trip to the Capitol Building high- lighted the week which was packed full of activities. Some that Y-.I were available to Us were: athletics, music, church services, general assemblies, Speech contests, radio broadcasts and tours of the Michigan State Campus. The benefits of this fine program were the opportunities to participate in various governmental activities such as vot-ing, conventions, meetings, and holding office. Recreation was open to all for participation. Also, these two weeks offered oppor- tunity to meet boys from all sections of Michigan and to partici- pate with these people in the various activities of the Boys' State program. It was a thrill to meet and associate with outstanding leaders including the governor of the State of Michigan. Valuable ideas were acquired as we listened to fine speakers and mingled with them between scheduled activities. The wonderful experience of personally walking about on the campus of the university, luring as a college student in one of the dormitories, meeting with and sitting under the voice of such college leaders as President John Hannah and faculty members has given us a new incite relative to the make up and function of schools of higher learning. This has certainly raised our educational sights. No doubt preparation for our future college days will be helped by our Boys' State privilege. PETE KOBE JOHN ROGERS
