After grad- uating from Maquon High School, he at- f ' tended Lombard College located in Galesburg, Illinois. During his college career he was active in the vocal and instrumental music departments. Mr. Donaldson 's assiduity in the college sports program later led him into the coaching profession. After receiving his undergraduate education at Lombard, Mr. Donaldson studied at the University of Illinois where he earned his Master of Arts degree. With the arrival of World War I, his college education was interrupted for a year and a half while he was with the army in France. Mr. Donaldson holds a teacher's certificate in school administration from the Illinois Department of Public Instruction and from the Michigan Department of Public Instruction. However, wishing to have as wide a scope of knowledge as possible, Mr. Donaldson has solicitously worked on a doctor 's degree and he has completed half the work necessary to acquire one. Before entering the teaching profession, our superintendent served as merchandise manager and assistant manager in the S. S. Kresge Company and in Montgomery Ward and Company. During the nine years that he spent in the Business World, he worked himself up to the position of manager in , ,V both companies. , Prior to Mr. Donaldson 's arrival in UQ' x Michigan, he was engaged in public school work in Minnesota and Illinois. He came to Watervliet in September, 1944, as High School Principal and mathematics instructor. While serving in this capacity, he accepted the advisorship of the Senior Class of 1947. Mr Donaldson became superintendent in 1946 when that position was vacated by Mr. Harold Crocker. The Watervliet school system has more than doubled its enrollment since Mr. Donaldson assumed his duties here. In 1946 the registry showed five hundred seventy-one students, in 1959 eleven hundred fifty students were enrolled Under Mr. Donaldson's administration the following current residents of Watervliet have served on the Board of Education: Chester Aspengren, Virginia Besemer, James Colman, Barney Dwiggins, Edith Fox, Mary Hutchins, Fred Johnson, Leonard Krall, Jerome Pitcher, Dr. Joseph Reed, William Rogers, Uyleau Shimer, Earle Smith, Eliot Spreen, and Alden White. At the close of the school year in June, 1960, after thirty-four years of service in public school work, Mr. Donaldson will retire and take up residence in California. There he plans to write some editorials l and a revised Algebra book or spend his leisure time on his numberous hobbies. At the end of a satisfying and salient career in Watervliet, Mr. Donaldson sums up his feelings con- q cerning his life here and his forthcoming retirementp I have enjoyed the sixteen years in the Waterv- liet school system more than any other place I have ever been. I have enjoyed the students here, the Faculties I have worked with, and the community in general. I will always carry with me many fond memories of the years in Watervliet. Sedan! ,,,..,. Each girl is a citizen of a city, county, and state and may run for any office on the local or state level. There are eighteen cities with twenty girls in each one supervised by a counselor. Highlights of the eight-day program are: State Party Conventions, the Mock Trial, a picnic lunch, a pajama party, inauguration of the Governor, and Hospital tour. Recreational activities included swimming, tennis, or softball. Girls could also participate in a choir or band. My own experience at Girls' State was one whichl will never forget. I made many new friends and came back with a better understanding of our government. I sincerely wish that more girls could have attended. JEAN BANDURSKI-: Boys' STATE Attending Wolverine Boys' State of 1959 was certainly a real privilege for us. The purpose of this week at Boys' State is to give fellows an opportunity to participate in the actual opera- tion of a democratic form of government. Conventions, elections inaugural ceremonies, and a trip to the Capitol Building high- lighted the week which was packed full of activities. Some that Y-.I were available to Us were: athletics, music, church services, general assemblies, Speech contests, radio broadcasts and tours of the Michigan State Campus. The benefits of this fine program were the opportunities to participate in various governmental activities such as vot-ing, conventions, meetings, and holding office. Recreation was open to all for participation. Also, these two weeks offered oppor- tunity to meet boys from all sections of Michigan and to partici- pate with these people in the various activities of the Boys' State program. It was a thrill to meet and associate with outstanding leaders including the governor of the State of Michigan. Valuable ideas were acquired as we listened to fine speakers and mingled with them between scheduled activities. The wonderful experience of personally walking about on the campus of the university, luring as a college student in one of the dormitories, meeting with and sitting under the voice of such college leaders as President John Hannah and faculty members has given us a new incite relative to the make up and function of schools of higher learning. This has certainly raised our educational sights. No doubt preparation for our future college days will be helped by our Boys' State privilege. PETE KOBE JOHN ROGERS Sex!! FRONT ROW, left to right: Bjorn Heyning, Mel Hiler, Bob Keller, Jim Swisher, Fred Grant Bob Richardson, Tom Wood. Mr. Robert Grimes graduated from Central Michigan College in February of 1959. After his graduation at Central he took postgraduate work at the University of Michigan. Last Fall Mr. Grimes came to Watervliet to become a football coach and to teach drivers education. This is his first job of teaching after graduating from college. He was born in a town near Detroit by the name of Ecorse. When football practice started last fall, there were only about twenty-nine boys present. Usually, as the practices go on, the number on the squad decreases. This year there was a great change in the usual procedure though. The small number of twenty-nine grew and grew until there were about forty-five boys on the squad. Coach Grimes has done a wonderful job of coaching. Even though we didn 't become Little Eight Champs this year, we are still thankful to all who are concerned for working hard this season and making this a year to remember. Also, let help they have given to make Something should also be us not forget the Assistant Coaches and the a better team. said about the managers. The little things that they accomplish help the coaches more than one realizes. They give up their free time to be of help to the team and coaches. The Seniors would like to thank the coaches and fellow teammates for a wonderful football season that will be remembered by everyone. The Band plays at all the home football games and this year marched at the University of Michigan's Band Day in Ann Arbor. In February, this organization attends the Dis- trict Festival for concert bands. Almost every year some of the members perform in the Sixth District Solo and Ensemble Con- test. The Band also marches at the Blossom Parade in Benton Harbor in the Spring and at River- view Park in Chicago in the summertime. 74a W' guna! . ,, 'G' ffm MEMBERS OF THE JUNIOR BAND: Ken Bachman, Sandra Bailey, Karen Benjamin, Greg Blevins, Kathy Bomke, Cathy Brule, Marie Burton, Laura Conrad, Sandra Drake, Bill Fizzell, Barg Flaherty, Paul Gard, Ed Harper, Roger Keller, Victor Kietzer, Charles Larsen, Gary Matrau, Elouise Moody, Bill Olmstad, Carol Op- peneer, Sue Reinking, Sue Roberts, Dorothy Scheetz, Diane Smith, Richard Sprague Rex Stickney, Vida Stennecke, Gail Strouse, Bill Taylor, Pat VanLinder, Alan West, Gerald Weyland, Eldon Woodworth. 1 -iw i n -JW? This group presents four concerts during the school year. The Chorus also attends the Annual Kalamazoo Festival at Western Michigan University in the spring. The past two years the Cho- rus has hosted several surrounding schools at a practice for this event. During the 1958-1959 school year, the Chorus had the honor of representing all of the class C schools in this district at the Michigan Education Association meeting at Kalamazoo. Finally, the Cho- rus wound up the year by receiving a first division rating at the Berrien County Music Festival. The Symphonettes are a special group of girls composed of singers from the sophomore class through the senior class. They participate at all four of the vocal music concerts. When invited, the group per- forms for special occasions. The Troubadours consist of an accomplished group of upper classmen boys who have been together for three years. They have appeared on WKZO television, and they have par- ticipated in talent contests with much success. The boys also sing at the vocal music concerts and all special events. The Watervliet Senior Chorus is fortunate to have Mr. William Ham- berger as its director. This past year he attended the Fred Waring Workshop for music directors at the Conrad Hilton Hotel in Chicago. It is largely through Mr. Hamberger's patience and persever- ance that the Watervliet Senior Chorus is considered one of the best vocal groups in this area. 70 Sedum? 0 . . The purpose of the club is to cultivate an active interest in the language and culture of the French people. Monthly meetings and field trips offer an opportunity for social as well as intellectual develop- ment. Le Gircle Francais is com- posed of the members of the second year French class. In the regular meetings of the club, programs in the ap- preciation of French art and civilization are enjoyed. Pro- ficiency in French conversation is the goal of the club. Field trips and social events provide varied opportunities for learn- ing to think and speak in French. Seven girls work in the principal's office each day throughout the school year to relieve him of many small tasks which may arise. They also send out the announcements and do other tasks. They are a valuable asset to Mr. Rogers and save him much time. Libraries are not made, they grow. To accomplish and work toward this goal our- aims are: 1. To constantly strive to im- prove the book collection and to provide the best books for the most people at the least cost. 2. To serve the student body and teachers and to enrich their academic work with the pleas- ure of reading. 3. To provide all individuals with a working knowledge of a good library and to prepare students to use libraries in any community or college. 4. To assist readers in secur- ing information and in using the library.
