M. Howe It 1S with great pride and pleasure that we the Senior Class of 1954 dedicate this year s Spectator to one who is more than deserving of the honor Mrs Irene Mahoney our advisor. Our four successful years in Watervliet High School have been due mainly to the patient guidance of our advisor. Although she will never be fittingly re- paid we hope she will always carry with her the knowledge that she has been of inestimable aid to a class that could not have done without her. VERITAS To tell the truth the truth and nothing but the truth Truth is not stressed with out reason Imagine the peace of mind possible to anyone who was sure that truth pre vailed among men that he need not guard against cam ouflage One need not fear in a world where truth prexails in all as close to heaven on earth as one can hope to know If formal education does no more than impress the value of truth it justifies the time consumed in its pursuit To recog nize truths doctrine and to respect its permanence make for the man of integrity who IS indispensable to general well being PRlNCIPAL'S MESSAGE Y 7 , . 7. . its application, and freedom from fear represents a condition 7 - ' f Vire Pl'flIflpd! We are indebted to the sports staff for a complete record of the athletic events, together with photographs of our squads and individual athletes. One of the most exacting tasks must be credited to the Senior Roll Call and Class Staff. The gathering of infor- mation for classes and individual senior class members. was entrusted to this competent staff. We never realized how many clubs and special events were available to our students, but found it necessary to have a staff devoted soley to reporting these added attrac- tions of school life. ANNA MARY HOWE MARY BYRD Lilerary Editor' Typift C0-Clfairmen Q Gloria DelSignore, Joyce Kennedy, McNeff. IRENE DOLORES HODAK MOWREY What is a yearbook without pictures? Our photography staff has certainly provided us with excellent material on every phase of school activities. Hard work without glamour is all that this staff can anticipate, but they all agree that the fashioning of a suc- cessful yearbook is ample reward. CLASS HISTORY In june came the annual Prom the farevs ell dance gn en to the Seniors by the junior Class held at the Ten Eyck Hotel In planning the Prom we took a new route Instead of following the trail climbed by the others we broke a new one For the first time in Waterxliet High School we beliewe the queen of the Prom and her court were chosen by all the members of the class who cast their ballots before the night of the dance Marge King was really queen of the junior Class when she was crowned that night because her classmates had so named her Her attendants were Vera Gettings Mary Ann Dagner Mary Jane Stickley Cynthia Farnham Anne Cummings and Carol Cornwell girls to vxhom came an honor inferior only to Marge s Fax ors were gn en to the girls who attended a practice not always adopted but always appreciated by the recipients Perhaps part of the success of that Prom could be attributed to the fact that the whole class had ads ertised the affair in their Campus Day song We made it' We are Seniors' Those were our thoughts when we entered school in September 1955 We realized howex er that although we were Seniors we were not yet on the summit There was still a climb to Commencement Day These were our guides on the last lap President Don Wood Vice President Tony Shavo Secretary Nadine Bradbury Treasurer Ted Blanchard and Reporter Marge King On November 10 we were in a position where we felt we could relax for a time and from the set path and had a Blue jean party at which both hosts and guests wore jeans cotton shirts and neckerchiefs instead of the usual informal ew enrng wear ANNIE GET YOUR GUN was the title of our theatrical presentation The entire work of the production was handled by the Seniors under Miss Gabriels direction 7 era Gettrngs in the title role and Bob Bouchard as Frank Butler headed the cast The climb was taxing all our powers of endurance and ingenuity We had the work of the newspaper the Garnet and Gray and of the yearbook the Spectator Matt Gormley was chosen editor in chief of the paper and john Riley held the same position on the yearbook We were happy when Mr Gabb agreed to act as faculty advisor to the yearbook staff In April came the Senior Ball our last social attempt successful as all our other class projects had been At the end of all are Class Night and Commencement Our conquest of the peak that challenged us is complete As we stand on this high point however we see taller mountains In that respect our experience is quite different from that of Hillary and Tensing They know that their biggest climb is behind them We still have ours before us the process of proving to ourselves and others that we can take our place among the mature people of the world and acquit ourselves creditably For the equipment given us by our administrators and teachers vue are greatful It will serxe us in good stead By MARY BYRD , V . v . . , . , . , . Beverly Legenbauer Trefzrlnw' Thomas Fitzpatrick In September, 1953, Wfatervliet High School welcomed us to its ranks of students and we assumed the lowly place assigned to the pea-green Freshmen. Homerooms, cafeteria, and class schedules offered new and strange experiences to us, but these soon became daily routine. Under the capable direction of Mr, Sanders, our beloved principal, we readily adjusted to our new life. We were organized as a class by Miss Elizabeth R. Hanrahan, guidance director, who supervised the selection of our class officers. We are happy and proud to be included in the SPECTATOR, and we hope to follow the splendid example set by the Class of 1954. 'Z N4 ...4 1 ? M-li 4 'nv Q' 's xxliif -'za J 'Q ll if . -ov y-1. DONALD W OOD The Student Council is the most important organization in the school. The idea for a council really got under way early in 1928, and this student organization has been serving the school ever since. It has twenty-three members, who are the specially elected representatives from each homeroom, plus alternates and all the members of the student body, faculty, and administration of Wfatervliet High School. The purpose of the council is to make the school a better place in every way for all. It strives to accomplish its purpose by furthering these aims: flj to promote the general welfare of the entire school by developing in the student body loyalty and good moraleg CZD to foster ideals of good citizenship and CSD to sponsor worthwhile projects that are typical of the Council's high standards. These projects are many and they include the Student Council Danceg the Student Council Playg conducting nomi- nations and elections for A.A. president, City Mayor and councilmeng arranging for and distributing individual pictures of the student bodyg holding special assemblies for the school and communityg hall dutyg supervising fire drills and selling student tickets to all games. The council holds its meeting every other Monday during sixth period under the very adept guidance of its advisor, Mrs. Ellen Bevins. The Student Council is the very heart of the schoolg within it lies the key to better education. me TUDENT COUNCIL GAR ETA DGR Y Co-Edilorr ,.,,,A.. ,,,,,,,,,,,, ,,,,,,,,,,,, A N NE CUMMINGS MATT GORMLEY Buyineff Mfmagerr ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, WARREN HOPSON GEORGE PERRY Exrbarzge Ediror ..,.....,,,,,,..,.,, MARGE PETERSON Extra! There are fifty-three members in the club. The purpose of the club is to acquaint students with the customs, culture, songs and dances of Spanish-speaking countries. It is also their aim to create better rela- tions between the United States and our South American neighbors. The members meet once a month, and present plays, see movies and hear music in the native language. The Art Club of Watervliet High School is an organization which attempts to develop the art-minded student and helps him to appreciate objects of beauty, as well as works of art, wherever they may be. The Art Club, which started in 1947, has reached a membership of forty. The qualifications for membership include one vear of art and enrollment in a second year of art. A special committee designs the unique invitations received by the prospective members of the club. These invitations are sent each October and the new members are accepted into the club at the annual Halloween party. The activities of the club are very useful and instructive. They include aiding in the painting and designing of stage sets for school plays and rendering posters for school activities and civic affairs. These meetings are held in the art room under the direction of Mrs. Dorothea Hudson. One of the most pleasant activities of the club during the school year is the sub- mitting of one major art project to the club.
