J8!l6t The Student Council of Waterville High School is an organi- zation of students, elected by students, to serve cial representatives in all matters of concern It is somewhat comparable to a state legislature in that the representatives of the people for the elected to represent them and to speak for them. as their offi- to the school. or to Congress students! are It provides a mediu through which student opinion may be heard and a forum for the consideration of common school problems. But it is more than this. Besides being a student forum, the student council is a training ground for leaders and followers. It gives stu- dents an opportunity to act in a real situation, not one which is 'made up just for practice. The student council is involved in the real problems of the school and can offer many sug- gestions for improvementg there is not and should not be any make believe' in the functioning of a truly effective student council. Thus, involvement in the real and important problems of the school gives students an opportunity to be heard and the accompanying understanding that their opinions are not only listened to but are also acted upon. By providing an opportunity for high school students to do the things which a good citizen does, the student council teaches good citizenship. It encourages students to become interested in civic matters and to take significant steps to alleviate a situation or to suggest ways and means of improve- ment. The main purpose of the student council is to teach good citizenship and, thus, the student council becomes, in reality, a laboratory of citizenship, an organization that teaches our young people to be good citizens by doing the things which a good citizen does, WHS Librar y l LIBRARIANS Standing: Rebecca Schelbe, Marilyn Mann. A good Future Farmer chapter is a part of any sound local program of vocational education in agriculture. Nearly all schools offering vocational agriculture have a chapter of Future Farmers of America. CSeparate Negro schools have chapters of New Farmers of Amerioa.J There is usually a close relation between the kind of an FFA chapter and the kind of program in vocational education in agriculture in the school. This is because the FFA is a definite part of the program in vocational agriculture, It is designed to supplement, round out, vitalize, and motivate the learning experiences that are provided for farm boys in high school vocational agriculture. The FFA is a part of the instruc- tional program--not something aside and outside the course in agriculture, OFFICERS GREENHANDS P' 2 ,Q : F .ki 6 , 't M F.H.A.
