SEASON'S RECORD The 1951 Yellowjacket fO0tD8ll team, which was as a whole quite small and inexperienced, played a good season of football. Although they only managed to post two victories, through a fire brand type of ball they managed to throw a scare into two of the counties best teams, Blue Rapids and Vermillion, losing to each by a score of 13 to 6. The season was opened against a strong, well experienced Summerfield team to which the Yellowjackets lost by a score of 55 to O. The next week found Waterville losing to Clifton by a score of 19 to 7. The next game was played against a much bigger Washington team against which the Yellowjackets put up a good battle but lost by a score of 33 to 0. The remaining games found the rapidly improving Yellowjack- ets losing a thriller to Blue Rapids on the home field, and the following week experience their first victory as they defeated Linn 19 to 12. In their next game the high spirited Waterville eleven, after a very good game, were defeated by Verm1ll1on,the Marshall County League Champions, by the close score of 15 to 6. The remaining two games found the Yellowjackets defeating Beattie by a score of 18 to 7 in Watervil1e's Homecoming game, and losing the final game of the season to Axtell by a score of 19 to 14. Four seniors played their last season of football for WHS, they were Lee Springer, half beck, who scored 8 touchdowns and 3 extra points for a total of 51 points, Glen Taplin, full back, who scored 2 touchdowns for 12 points, Gene Youngstedt, end, who scored one touchdown and one extra point for 7 points, and Keith Jacobson, tackle. Springer, Taplin, Jacobson, and Root Copeland, a Junior, were named to the all-county second team. Basketball 1 al... Back Row: Lee Springer, Gene Youngstedt, Carl Schuh, Gene Schmidt.
