From the first ' day of sophomore year to graduation there is a spark that grows within us. It becomes larger as we kindle new friendships and the expansion of our cooperation with others. We see it in the spirit of competition whether it be victory or defeat, and in the people who still cheer on whatever the score. I t's the feeling of warmth we find in the fun and the games, but also in the quiet seriousness of the times. The spark grows into a flame as we strive for our ideals. And as individuals only we can attain those goals. When we are through there's a fire burning in our minds and our hearts. Let this fire Never Burn O ut.' In Your Honor Mr. Iames R. McNicI1oIas o o s f' Q, ...I DE DI CA TI ON The devotion of a man to his profession goes all too often unrecognized. Such devotion is quiet, frequently overlooked, and yet, as it exists within Mr. james McNicholas, very strong. The commitment of Mr. McNicholas to his career extends beyond academic subjects and into extra-curricular and comm unity activities. First and foremost a teacher of English, he strives to main tain the importance of a subject which students often consider boring and irrelevant. The ability of Mr. McNicholas to establish a warm rapport with his students through his humor and his am using stories is highly regarded. Mr. McNicholas's concern for the total student is shown by his involvement in sports, particularlyas coach of the golf team and as a director of the Gridiron Club. He also takes an avid interest in sports with which he is not directly concerned, and his attendance at many games is noted and appreciated. Being in vol ved as the Director of the March for the Retarded evinces his interest in all of us. So in appreciation of your being you, we, the Class of 1975, with respect and admiration dedicate our Annual to you, Coach james McNicholas. l . J I ana w :Q . -fi ei V 1 'Y' .mf gil.. Grammar implies rules which are too often broken, endless memorization, and boring compositions. Yet, the study of English involves much more, since our language is a part of our culture. Therefore, when studying English we are exposed to culture, through the drama, poetry, and creative writing included in an English course. Perhaps the most vital goal of English is to teach a person how to express ideas clearly and precisely. In this modern age of mass media. the need to fulfill this goal has become even more prominent. 2.54 Centimeters Equals 1 Inch , lf I N lllt FRANK V. SOLLITTO DANIEL E. The higher forms of math are more often studied now, but the basic elements remain extremely important, because we must use them in our daily lives. During the year, Watertown High participated in a Metric Week. A week was set aside for the study of this system of measure in all math classes. Currently, the metric system is a prime example of basic math which will affect our lives as the United States gradually adopts this system. THOMAS HAZELL MARTIN H. MCGANN, JR. JOHN J. With the continued use of the language lab, students are able to attain a fuller and more meaningful insight into each language. A great deal of credit is due to Mrs. Stella Boy, who is an important factor in the continuing success of the Foreign Lan- guage Department. Red Raiders, last year's Middlesex League co-champions, won seven of their ten games in the '74 football season. Headcoach John Barbati was most pleased with this year's team and with W.H.S. football in gen- eral. The Red Raiders have won more football games in the last four seasons than any team in the league. The '74 football season ended with one of the biggest upsets in the fifty-four history of the Watertown-Belmont Thanksgiving Day game: Watertown beat Belmont, 28-14. This was the Raider's first victory in Belmont since 1960. This year's team had a lot of underclassmen playing varsity, indicating a very successful season next year, also. 'GirI's Basketball: Hard Work But Winning Is So Much Fun! Two years of hard work seemed worthwhile as the Watertown High Girls' Basketball team captured its second consecutive Middlesex League Title. The squad was led by a capable and versatile senior, Captain Maureen Ryan, who was high scorer for the season, averaging T4 points per game. She set up many fast breaks which guards Patty Beagan and Eileen Crocetti quickly capitalized on for two points. These guards, along with junior Elizabeth Brackett, possessed great defensive ability and immobilized their opponents on possible fast breaks. Senior forwards Linda McCarron and Marie Horan proved to be outstanding at both defensive and offensive boards. At any time throughout the season, forwards Kathy Eberly and Karol Paltios could be called on to fill the shoes of the starting board. Other team members who could be called on at any moment were Seniors Lynn Casag- rande, Jani Oates, Debbie Saverese and Junior Ginny Studley. The Middlesex League Champions entered the State Tourney with a 9-O record, and defeated their opponents from Lexington. They then defeated rival Belmont in the Quarter-finals but were eliminated by a strong Lincoln-Sudbury team in the Semi-final round. -V, fa This is the way to Do lt. Red Raiders won five of their seven gymnastics meets in the '74-'75 season. Excellent coaching by headcoach Anthony Gika and long practices, often held at night, lead to the fine team record. Gymnastics is a new and growing sport at W.H.S. Despite the highly individualized nature of the sport, the Red Raiders functioned as a well disciplined team. There were no real stars, everyone performed up to expectations. Seniors included Mark Leonard, Mike Pepe, Ralph Chloo- dian, Jim Donnelly, Bob Busconi, Vin Woo, and Phil Costello. As elected representatives they must be able to carry out the wishes of the stu- dent body and at the some time make the wishes of the administration known to the students. Their efforts in raising class funds result in the ability of the student body to conduct meaning- ful and enioyable activities. JUNIOR CLASS OFFI- CERS The class of 75 is most fortunate in having out- standing Ieaders. More often than not, the Junior Class plays a secondary role to the Senior Class but it was not so this year. The outstanding success of the Junior Class gives testi- mony to the spirit and devotion of the class offi- cers. We look for them to continue their outstanding performance next year. U Information in a seri- ous or humorous con- text is found in the Bulle- tin. Articles by students, sports stories, news, and editorial comment result in an informed student body. Artistically talented students contribute sketches. The work of the photography staff completes the efforts of all involved students. This year's Chess Club was small in num- ber, but what it lacked in quantity it made up for in quality. The club was led by a nucleus of outstanding talent from this year's chess team. The remainder of the club was composed of chess enthusiasts from the student body at large. Although the atmosphere of the club was always informal, the competitive nature of tournament chess was always present. 137 2---Fi .yNa1?f - Math Team The Watertown High math team competes in five ten-team math meets in the Greater Boston Math League each season. As an understate- ment, the problems are difficult and the competi- tion is rough. Pressures of stiff competition and a race with the clock compound the difficulties of the meets. Our activities this year included trips to the Gardner Museum, to see the Nutcracker Suite, to the Boston Pops, and also on ethnic dinner. The club divided its treasury between the Art, Music, and English departments to enable them to purchase much needed items. Media Club Instead of iust offer- ing students a chance for enioyment the Media Club performs necessary services for the school and the town. By video-taping sports events and acting as technicians for town meetings, school assem- blies, and especially the class play, the club's members till an impor- tant need. l4l '59 Recognizing Our Leaders A wards Day Two for Jim Simpson - Basketball and Baseball. 42 The Elks scholarship for Patty Beagan.
