Hampariau 14,144 104066 To be elected to the National fum Laude Society is an individual honor-Ya recognition of the record of high intellec- tual achievement of the individual student during the three years of Senior High School. To have so large a group of' Seniors proved worthy of election contri- butes to the honor of the entire graduating class, and 1946 should be congratulated on the munber of its members admitted to the 1Yatertown High Chapter of Vum liaude this year: only the Vlass of 1939 has cvcr topped the record now set by 1946. Election to Cum liaude is the high- est scholastic honor awarded by the high school and is comparable to Phi Beta Kappa in the liberal arts colleges. Stu- dents of the college preparatory course only are eligible, as ability must be shown in a guages, mathematics, science and history. The VVatertown High Vhapter re- ceived its charter from the National Cum liaude Society in 19Q1. Ours was the first and is still the only public high school in Alassachusetts to be so distinguished. There are nineteen chapters of Cum Laude in Nlassaclmsetts, but the others are all in strictly college preparatory schools of the most outstanding reputation, like Phillips Exeter, Phillips Andover, Lawrence Acad- emy at Groton, Tabor Academy, and Dana Hall at lvellesley. As our Cum Laude scholars of 194-6 go out into wider fields of endeavor, we are sure that like the Tum Laude Alumni be- fore them, their future achievements will continue to reflect honor upon their f'lass of 194-6 and the llvatertown High well-rounded curriculum, including lan- School.
